10 Hidden Secrets in Borderlands

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at 10 of the coolest hidden secrets you can find across the “Borderlands” games!

What Does It Mean!?

“Borderlands 2” (2012)
We’ll admit that younger audiences may not understand this one, but for those of us who played “Borderlands 2” when it first came out, it was somewhat special. Well, in a baffling sort of way. While exploring the Highlands, there is a small campsite perched on the side of a mountain looking out over the town. You’ll have to find your way to the top of the mountain in order to slide your way down to the camp. Once you do, you’ll either get a beautiful view of a double rainbow and a hilariously wholesome call from either Claptrap or Handsome Jack. If you grew up around the early 2010’s internet, you’ll recognize the meme instantly.

This Means Something…This Is Important

“Borderlands” (2009)
Sorry, but this is not a “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” reference. But considering the mystery and questionable existence of QR codes, it was a title worth having. Seriously, who is still using these things? Who even enjoys scanning these things? If you’re one of the nine who do, the first “Borderlands” game has quite a few of them hidden throughout the game. While they don’t give you any super special bonuses or unlockables, they do contain some fun messages. “Borderlands 2” and “Pre-Sequel” had a few of their own, but not as many as the first game did.

Brighthoof’s Room of Secrets

“Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” (2022)
Most games typically require the player to break the game in unconventional ways to access dev rooms. For “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands”, there is a special dev room that you can access without risking a ban. In Brighthoof, head into the tavern called “Hawker’s Walk”. Head downstairs to find a mysterious portal and go on through. Inside you’ll find purple crystals, a Dragon Egg, and a beautiful mosaic made of pictures of the developers behind “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands”.

A Code for the Ages

“Borderlands 2” (2012)
It’s a real shame that games don’t contain fun little cheat codes anymore. “Borderlands 2” was among the last of the AAA games to have included one, and it’s a neat code! It’s stupid, but it’s still neat. While on the title screen, input the world-famous Konami Code - up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, Start (or O, X, Options for PlayStation users). With this you’ll unlock the magical modifier known as “Extra Wubs” mode…which doesn’t actually do anything, but it’s a funny nod to a classic gaming code.

A Different Kind of Oscar

“Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel” (2014)
One of the coolest aspects of “Borderlands” is that you can find rare or special enemies that you may not have come across in your first playthrough. Some, such as this one, do require you to go out of your way and thoroughly explore some areas. To find Oscar, you’ll have to head to Triton Flats and look for Napykins Lunestalker’s garage. Go to the back to catch Oscar digging through the garage’s garbage. By the way, yes, this is an obvious reference to Oscar the Grouch from “Sesame Street”.

The Dev Chests

“Borderlands” (2009)
While “Wonderlands” had a neat dev room dedicated to the developers, the first “Borderlands” game had developer chests. These special red chests are scattered across the game and hidden in areas you may not have thought to look into. Now, fair warning, not all of them will give you guaranteed super amazing weapons. Most of them will, but sometimes, you might grab a dud or two. Even so, these are still worth keeping an eye out for as you might nab something early on that can help you in later missions.

The Cave of Cubic Wonders

“Borderlands 2” (2012)
Of all of the easter eggs across the “Borderlands” games, this one is probably the most famous. In “Borderlands 2”, Caustic Caverns hides a special cave right on the edge of the map. Once you have finished Chapter Nine, go over to the northwest part of the map and look for a small pathway you can jump down to. Inside will be a cave made of “Minecraft” blocks and a horde of Creepers and Badass Creepers. Survive the horde and you’ll be able to claim the gold and Eridium for yourself as well as a goofy Creeper head for your character!

He Was Number One!

“Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” (2022)
“Wonderlands” is loaded with so many references to some of the biggest legends in fiction. However, no hall of fame is complete without the man, the myth, the legend - Smitty WerbenJagerManJensen. The man who was number one has a tribute dedicated to him that can be found in Shattergrave Barrow. In the cemetery, you’ll see one skeletal knight with his grave dug up, and what is he wearing? The predecessor to the soda-drinking hat: a soda-drinking helmet!

No More Stories, Head!

“Borderlands 3” (2019)
We know “Borderlands 3” isn’t exactly everyone’s favorite game in the franchise, but we’d be remiss to leave off one fun secret. And this one is a bit of a subtle nod to the 2018 “God of War”. While you’re wandering around the Tazandeer Ruins, be on the lookout for a small boat near the shore. Look inside, and you’ll see a severed head with horns at the front. This is absolutely supposed to be Mimir albeit with no goatee or fancy glowing eyes…and no Nordic tales to tell. Quiet now, Head - there are malicious streamers to hunt.

Not Your Father’s Platformer

“Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel” (2014)
For a series like “Borderlands”, you wouldn’t expect to find a Nintendo reference like this, and it might be a bit difficult to reach depending on your platforming skills. In the final area of “Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel”, you may have noticed a set of rising platforms. While most of them will cause instant death, one will lead you into a secret level. Find it, and you’ll suddenly be thrust into a dungeon heavily inspired by “Super Mario Bros.” You’ll have a combat scenario, multiple rooms to explore, and a good amount of loot to walk out with. It is definitely worth the effort.
