Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we’re looking at some hidden secrets in the Metal Gear Solid series. For this list, we’ll be looking at some of the many Easter eggs, references and other small tidbits that players may have missed in the Metal Gear series. What are some hidden secrets we missed? Throw on some camo and sneak into the comments to let us know.
Let's start off with something a little more known. In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, players were faked out while playing as Snake in the beginning. Shortly after the opening, we finally see the main protagonist, Raiden. At the time, the reception to Raiden wasn't all that great as players wanted to sneak around as Snake once again. At the start of MGS 3, we’re greeted with a question asking which Metal Gear Solid game we like more. If you select MGS 2, the opening scene will have a similar fake out. As the character skydives and lands, we see a character revealed to be Raiden. Well, it’s actually just a mask that looks like Raiden. This was clearly to poke fun at players who were upset about the choice to have Raiden star in MGS 2.
There are a few Easter eggs in Metal Gear games that involve Assassin's Creed. In Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, there is a mission titled Travel to the Mine Base. While taking out guards and rescuing prisoners, you may notice a bale of hay that looks a little out of place. If you go to the building above it, you can jump into the hay and perform a stylish move with the cry of an eagle being heard. This will also unlock a special box, the Assassin’s Straw Box. In the HD re-release of Peace Walker, this also became a trophy or achievement.
After each mission in The Phantom Pain, Snake will return to Mother Base, the headquarters of the Diamond Dogs. Mother Base is full of soldiers and as your unit grows in size, the base will too. As each platform gets added, construction must be done. While there is construction going on in certain areas, you may notice signs that suggest to watch your head. If players stand under one of these signs for too long, a crate will fall from the sky with cartoonish audio to accompany it. Needless to say, watch your head.
In the first Metal Gear Solid, you’ll be traveling through Shadow Moses and doing a good bit of backtracking. If you hide in a cardboard box while in a cargo truck, this actually acts as a secret fast travel system. Each box has a location written on the side. There are three different boxes, box A, B, and C, each with their own location; Heliport, Nuclear Storage Building, and Snowfield, respectively. This will make getting around Shadow Moses a little faster, but only if you know the trick.
You may have noticed these little frogs throughout MGS 3. These little guys are Kerotans. There are 64 in total in Snake Eater. If you shoot all 64, you will unlock the Stealth Camouflage, which is quite possibly the best item in the game. While the stealth camo isn’t actually a piece of camouflage, but an item that must be equipped, it does make the player virtually invisible and completely silent. Sure, hunting down these little guys isn't the only way to unlock the stealth camo, (you can also get it by beating the game without triggering Alert Mode), but it will stop them from making that slightly annoying noise they make.
It’s hard to be stealthy when you have a cold. Imagine hiding in a box and just sneezing while enemies are around. This can happen in Metal Gear Solid 2. In the opening moments, we play as Snake on a tanker during a cold and rainy night. If we wait in the cold for too long, Snake will develop a cold and will sneeze from time to time. If Snake sneezes close to a guard, this will alert them and they will investigate. If only Snake had brought a box of tissues for this mission...
The End is one of the most interesting bosses in any Metal Gear game. At times he can be very well hidden and tracks Snake as he hunts him. If players are able to sneak up on The End and hold him up, he’ll say “I don’t think so” and drop the camo. The moss camo will raise players’ camo index to 95% while crawling over moss. If matched with certain facepaints, your camo index can increase to 100%, the highest of any camo in the game.
In the mission Deja Vu, we are tasked with recreating key moments from the 1998 original Metal Gear Solid. During this mission, you may notice some logos from past Metal Gear games. Players can find an AM MRS-4 rifle with a special blue light attached to it. Shine this light on certain logos and they will disappear. So which logos can be erased and why? There are a total of 15 logos, 8 of which can be erased. These 8 logos are the Metal Gear games directed by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima. Could this have been a subtle hint of what was to come between Konami and Kojima?
What started as an April Fools joke became an actually unlockable costume. On April 1st, 2008, we were presented with a new trailer for a new game in the Assassin’s Creed series. The trailer would show what appears to be Altair in a warzone. We would quickly learn that it was, in fact, Snake donning the iconic white robe. The assassin’s robe can be unlocked by being awarded the assassin’s emblem, which requires 50+ knife kills, 50+ CQC holds, and 25 or less alerts.
In mission 20 of The Phantom Pain, you can find a boombox that is playing the radio broadcast we hear in PT. The broadcast details the horrific killings that happened that Sunday afternoon. In mission 28, we also hear the end monologue from PT. Along with the radio broadcasts, you can also find a cassette tape that features creepy music featured in PT. As most know, PT was the playable teaser for Silent Hills, the next game Kojima was working on before he and Konami went separate ways.
