How To Check Your Tire Pressure

How To Check Your Tire Pressure
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
In this video, we provide you a step-by-step demonstration of how to check your car's tire pressure.

How to Check Your Tire Pressure

It’s a good idea to check your tire pressure as often as once a month. Be sure to check the pressure when the tires are cold. This means that the car has been stationary for at least three hours.

Tire pressure must be checked by using a tire-pressure gauge – it is not accurate simply to look at it. If you don’t have a gauge, gas stations and garages should be equipped with ones you can use.

You car’s tires have precise air-pressure specifications, and you will usually find this information on a sticker found on the driver’s side doorjamb, in the trunk or in the glove compartment. The only indication of tire pressure listed on the tire itself is for the maximum pressure, and this is not the number you need.

Remove the cap on the air valve by unscrewing it. Be sure to place it somewhere safe so you don’t lose it.

Press your tire-pressure gauge against the valve, and hold it securely. If you hear a hissing sound, press harder because this means you are letting air out.

Check the measurement on the gauge.

If necessary, add more air to the tires, being careful not to over inflate.

Remember, using these easy steps to check your tire pressure can help your car handle better.
