Max Payne 3: Everything You Should Know
How many times can one guy have nothing to lose? Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be exploring everything you should know about Max Payne 3.
In this latest chapter in the high-octane action series, gamers are reunited with the hard-boiled and recently retired NYPD detective Max Payne.
A radical departure in terms of aesthetics, this new installment is absent of much of the Film Noir elements that the series is best known for. In fact, its sunny backdrop will probably shock longtime fans, not to mention its depiction of their hero as a pudgy and out of shape bald guy with an addiction to painkillers.
How did it come to this? Well, Max Payne 3 begins with a flashback where we learn that Max had killed a high-ranking mob boss and was forced to leave the Big Apple in the name of self-preservation. A decade later, he lives in Brazil as a mercenary; taking whatever jobs he can to get by. The most recent includes playing bodyguard for the family of a wealthy real estate agent.
Unfortunately, Max’s bad luck returns when a street gang kidnaps his employer’s wife and he is pulled into a conspiracy, as well as battle between warring factions within the South American town of São Paulo. As expected, things don’t go very well for the hero, as he is constantly and consistently ambushed and up against incalculable odds.
Jumping into Max’s shoes, players venture through a deluge of daylight in a third-person shooter that not only re-invents the aging series, but also strives to revolutionize the way such games are played. These include incorporating an all-new cover system, silky smooth character animations, and advanced AI.
Thankfully, the glorious slow-motion shooting action that made the series a favorite is back and better than ever. With the ability to slow down his perception of time, Max manages to survive deadly shootouts by firing off precise rounds at whoever gets in his way.
Built around the character’s age and poor health, bullet time has been made to feel more realistic. This means that Max will often fall on his ass and be forced to dash to cover, forcing players to adapt a more realistic approach that is less about turning Max into a bullet sponge.
That aside, the way bullet time itself works further encourages the action. For example, your ability to use it replenishes depending on risks you take, your level of skill and the precision of your shots.
Moreover, bullet time and the rest of the gameplay benefits from motion-capture, Rockstar’s proprietary physics engine, and the natural motion behaviors powered by the Euphoria engine.
Enemies don’t just look real, but act it by clutching at their injuries, seeking cover, calling for backup, and providing suppressive fire for one another.
Not only showcasing a thrilling, albeit linear single player experience, gamers are treated to an all-new multiplayer component. A first for the series, this includes full use of bullet time, which envelops whoever is in combat equally. However, only the person who initiates the maneuver will benefit from normal reloading and weapons fire.
The long-awaited third installment in the franchise, Max Payne 3 arrives on the Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows PC in the form of a massive and masterfully crafted shooter of epic proportions. Fans and newcomers alike will love diving through the air as the man with nothing to lose…. Trust us, there’s nothing quite like it.
