Most Anticipated MCU Releases in 2022

Most Anticipated MCU Releases in 2022
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
The MCU is about to get a whole lot bigger in 2022! For this list, we'll be looking at the most exciting upcoming marvel projects that are set to debut on streaming and in theaters. Our countdown includes “What If...?” Season 2, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness", and more!

#11: “I Am Groot”

Also in:

Top 10 Most Anticipated Star Wars Releases of 2022 and Beyond

Release Date: TBA 2022 After stealing scenes in “Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2.”, the young Groot will sprout up in shorts. These stories will explore the misadventures he got into between the events of his debut movie and his recent teenager phase. The most interesting aspect of this series is the promise that Groot will run into new alien allies or foes. Although that description could point to obscure characters like Howard the Duck, we’re excited about the potential for surprising character cameos. While it would be awesome if space explorers that look like Harry Styles show up in every episode, we’re sure this Groot series will be fun while he’s adventuring on his own too.

#10: Untitled Halloween Special

Release Date: Halloween 2022 Actor Gael García Bernal is set to join the MCU this year sometime around a certain spooky holiday. Early reports and rumors heavily suggest that he’ll be playing a character who transforms into the famous Werewolf by Night. This Marvel wolf typically struggles to control his wolf form and avoid mystical threats. Despite not having many details about this project, the casting is enough to capture our attention. We’ve seen the Golden Globe winning Garcia Bernal deliver great performances in everything from “Mozart In the Jungle” to his role as Hector in “Coco”. Actress Laura Donnelly of “Outlander” fame is also attached to star. Between the strong casting and interesting lead, this Halloween special is shaping up to be a scary good time.

#9: “What If...?” Season 2

Also in:

Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies of 2022

Release Date: TBA 2022 Throughout the first season of this animated anthology show, we got to see fun and unique reimaginings of famous Marvel characters from across the multiverse. Captain Peggy Carter, T’Challa’s Star-Lord, a sinister Dr. Strange and more were all thrilling to watch. Their brilliant appearances made us optimistic that season 2 will be packed with creative characters and stories. Since we didn’t see the armor-clad Gamora’s backstory, the writers could shed some light on how she became the powerful warrior we saw. We could also follow up on what happened when Peggy found Steve’s Hydra-Stomper suit. Whether “What if…?” continues old stories or takes us somewhere new, we’re ready to travel through the multiverse for another exhilarating season.

#8: “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special”

Also in:

Top 10 Things You Missed in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

Release Date: December 2022 Before the Guardians return for a third volume in theaters, they’ll gather together for a smaller Disney+ tale. The seven actors on the team’s current roster have all been confirmed for a special that could explore an earth or alien holiday. Since the Guardians have a knack for attracting trouble, we doubt they’ll just sit around a campfire exchanging gifts. One of their old enemies could return to stir up trouble. And even if the team isn’t visited from a foe of adventures past, reports say this special will introduce story elements for the next “Guardians” movie. Their space shenanigans on Disney+ could be vital to understanding their next film. That fact makes an already enticing program into a must-watch for MCU fans.

#7: “Ms. Marvel”

Also in:

Top 10 Most Anticipated Disney Movies of 2022

Release Date: Summer 2022 This groundbreaking superhero show will explore how a Muslim teenager named Kamala Khan becomes a heroine. Although she may not have the same shapeshifting powers that other versions of the character have, she’ll definitely be a powerful ally to the other Marvel heroes. We also know that her journey will be heavily influenced by her respect for Captain Marvel. At the moment, it’s unclear if the experienced heroine will fly by. But the talented and more than capable action star Aramis Knight was confirmed to be in the show’s cast. Seeing him work with actress Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan should make for thrilling and compelling action scenes. When Ms. Marvel premieres, we should expect a fantastic superheroine series from a fresh new perspective.

#6: “Secret Invasion”

Also in:

Top 20 Secret Agents in Movie and TV History

Release Date: TBA 2022 If you thought finding out Nick Fury was secretly the shapeshifting skrull Talos during “Far From Home” was wild, then “Secret Invasion” will blow your mind. The series will feature characters like Maria Hill and Nick Fury learning that other earthlings are skrulls in disguise. This setup means that heroes we thought we’ve known for years might not be who they seem. Cobie Smulders, Sam Jackson and Ben Mendlesohn’s Talos will likely have to go through the villain played by Kingsley Ben-Adir to uncover the truth. Accomplished actresses like Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke will also present themselves as either friends or foes. When “Secret Invasion” answers all our burning questions, we hope we can handle the answers.

#5: “She-Hulk”

Also in:

Top 10 Most Anticipated Releases of May 2017

Release Date: TBA 2022 Jennifer Walters will balance her legal career with her hulking transformation abilities in her own title series. Fortunately, her cousin Bruce Banner will be there to support her. Early press hints that the show will lean more into comedy than legal drama. It would be hilarious to team up with someone like Daredevil in the courtroom instead of a big fight scene. While his cameo is up in the air, Jameela Jamil’s Titania and Tim Roth’s Abomination are set to appear. Both characters will definitely be a physical match for She-Hulk’s incredible strength. Thanks to the show’s reported tone, their clashes could be some of the funniest bouts in the MCU. We have no objections to seeing She-Hulk balance the scales of justice in and out of the courtroom.

#4: “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”

Also in:

Top 10 Characters Who Have ALSO Become Black Panther

Release Date: November 11, 2022 Although the sun has set on Chadwick Boseman’s T-Challa, it will rise behind notable Wakandan characters in the “Black Panther” sequel. Iconic heroines like Shuri, Nakia and Okoye are all poised to lead the narrative. It will be great to see them continuing their adventures while giving us the witty banter they’re all known for. Along the way, they may mentor newcomers like Riri Williams, A.K.A. Ironheart. There’s also been hints that underwater royal Namor could make waves in Wakanda. With Ryan Coogler back as director, we know the story will be good no matter what direction it takes. While the sequel may not look like the movie any of us envisioned, this Black Panther tale has a lot to get excited about.

#3: “Moon Knight”

Also in:

Everything We Know About Zack Snyder's REBEL MOON

Release Date: March 30, 2022 The breathtaking first teaser for this lunar hero’s show introduces us to a down on his luck man named Steven who struggles with a sleep disorder. However, we soon learn that some aspects of his dreams might actually be real. On top of that, the Steven we met is one of Marc Spector’s personalities. The amount of range Oscar Isaac shows as Marc/Steven in the trailer alone was a great sign. And the presence of the legendary Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow solidifies that the series will be full of tremendous acting. If the entire show can maintain the momentum and fantastic presentation of the teaser, Moon Night could be one of the studio's best shows yet.

#2: “Thor: Love and Thunder”

Also in:

Top 10 Most Rewatchable Moments in Thor: Love and Thunder

Release Date: July 8, 2022 When the god of thunder leads his fourth adventure this summer, he’ll stand among a positively divine assortment of characters. Christian Bale will take a villainous turn and play Gorr the God Butcher. Since he’ll undoubtedly try to slay Thor, we hope the Guardians, his Asgardian allies and Korg and Miek can help keep the original Avenger safe. While all those characters are superb, the person we’re most excited about is Jane Foster. She’ll bring both her vast intelligence and powerful abilities to the table when she gains godlike powers. While there’s a chance Jane might steal some of Thor’s thunder, we’re confident Chris Hemsworth will blow us away too. He’ll likely shine in a stacked sequel that’s guaranteed to shake up the entire MCU.

#1: "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness"

Also in:

Top 10 Things You Missed in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Release Date: May 6, 2022 It will take the skills of former Sorcerer Supreme Dr. Strange and the immeasurable power of Wanda Maximoff to stop an ominous multiverse threat. But hero turned villain Mordo won’t make things easy. During this high stakes movie, we’ll get to meet the dimension hopping heroine America Chavez. While a trio of fan favorite heroes would be enough to enchant us, the alleged appearances of other notable characters have increased hype for this sequel. Everyone from a version of Iron Man played by Tom Cruise to an entire team of X-Men have been rumored to show up. The potential of seeing beloved characters helping or hurting Dr. Strange made what was already slated to be a fantastic sequel into one of Marvel’s most anticipated films.
