Top 10 Anticipated Action Movies of 2022
#10: “Top Gun: Maverick”
Release Date: May 27, 2022
Tom Cruise first gave us a need for speed when he appeared in the 1986 classic “Top Gun”. Nearly 40 years later, we’ll see him jump back into the cockpit for another high flying film. While Maverick was working his way up the ladder in the original, he’ll be leading others this time around. The trailers immediately gave viewers nostalgia due to excellent homages to the original. At the same time, franchise newcomers like Miles Teller, Manny Jacinto and Ed Harris will mix things up. And the awe-inspiring aerial action is bound to pull new people into the franchise. After enduring a few delays and shooting a few incredible stunts, the movie will finally take flight in May.
#9: “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”
Release Date: “April 8, 2022”
Since video game movies are usually duds, many people were skeptical about a live action Sonic adventure. But to everyone's surprise, the blue blur’s 2020 film was funny and faithful to the spirit of the games. The movie’s success opened up the door for this past franchise to explore ideas it set up in the original. Early details revealed Dr. Robotnik will escape the weird mushroom planet he got stuck on. We’ll also find out why Sonic’s traditional pal Tails is looking for the speedy being. Outside of following up on those plot lines, we’ll also see the always awesome Idris Elba voice Knuckles. Although we weren’t expecting to see “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” back in 2020, now we can’t wait for this sequel.
#8: “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”
Release Date: “November 11, 2022”
After Chadwick Boseman brought Black Panther to life, the world was rocked with the news of his tragic passing. In the wake of this tremendous loss, Marvel Studios decided not to recast his part. The sequel will instead focus on other Wakandan characters we’ve gotten to know and love. Shuri, Nakia and Okoye will most certainly be front and center. While we don’t know what threat they’ll be up against, the film will definitely introduce a new ally named Dominique Thorne, A.K.A. Ironheart. The movie might also go underwater to follow up on foreshadowing Okoye laid out in “Endgame”. Whatever direction the film chooses to go, fans are looking forward to what promises to be an exciting and emotional return to Wakanda.
#7: “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)”
Release date: October 7, 2022
An animated Miles Morales leapt off of screens and into viewers' hearts during his first cinematic adventure. The young Spider-man’s groundbreaking story was so spectacular that it earned an Oscar for best animated film. Now that audiences are familiar with Miles and his pals from other universes, they’re ready to see more of them in 2022. Reluctant mentor Peter B. Parker and resourceful heroine Gwen Stacy will swing back in the picture. And while we know Issa Rae will make her debut as Jessica Drew AKA Spider-Woman, Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O'Hara could also enter the spider verse. Will a villain emerge that’s powerful enough to take on all these Spider-people? We'll find out when Miles returns to theaters.
#6: “John Wick: Chapter 4”
Release Date: May 27, 2022
“John Wick’s” third installment ended on a cliffhanger. After the skilled assassin broke rules the shady High Table organization established, they kept trying to end him. By the film’s conclusion, Wick is left battered, beaten and hungry for revenge. We can't wait to see him team up with Laurence Fishburne’s Bowery King to tear the High Table apart. Casting news heavily suggests that the legendary action star Donnie Yen will assist Wick in his journey. We’ll also see the talents of “Mortal Kombat” star Hiroyuki Sanada, “It” actor Bill Skarsgård, and acting veteran Clancy Brown. They could appear as either friends or foes to John during his rampage of revenge.
#5: “The Flash”
Release Date: November 4, 2022
If speedster Barry Allen meets certain conditions, he can run to the past and alter the outcome of certain events. While this ability helped save the world in “Zack Snyder’s Justice League”, the upcoming “Flash” movie will show us what happens when time traveling goes horribly wrong. We know that Barry will meet up with Ben Affleck’s Batman and Supergirl while he’s running around and trying to fix things. But the most anticipated character set to appear is far and away Michael Keaton’s dark knight. Although we haven't seen him in the suit since 1992, the sight of his bat ears was enough to excite fans. He may be the key to helping Barry bring light back to a dark timeline.
#4: “Thor: Love and Thunder”
Release Date: July 8, 2022
Once we heard Taika Waititi would follow up his excellent work on “Thor: Ragnarok” with this Asgardian film, we knew the new movie would be thrilling, hilarious and tug at our heartstrings. But it’s the cast that really put the hype level for this cosmic adventure through the roof. The Guardians of the Galaxy will make an appearance alongside Thor. Hopefully, they’ll stick around to help him fight Christian Bale’s new villain, Gorr the God Butcher. Then again, Jane Foster might be all the backup Thor needs. Natalie Portman is set to make a divine return to the MCU as a genius scientist with godly power. Watching Guardians, God Butchers, and great warriors all appear in the same movie is a ridiculously exciting concept.
#3: “Mission: Impossible 7”
Release Date: September 30, 2022
The “Mission: Impossible” franchise managed to give us three high octane and high quality movies in a row. Every time we go to see Ethan Hunt stop an evil plot nowadays, Tom Cruise is ready to do another seemingly impossible stunt that leaves us breathless. And if early reports pan out, we’ll see at least one train crash and another amazing motorcycle jump. Cruise’s Ethan will leap into action with his old friends like Luther and Benji. We’ll also see Hayley Atwell play a mysterious character and Deathstroke actor Esai Morales become a villain. Although the plot is still a mystery, we’re optimistic that Tom Cruise will lead this stacked cast into another fantastic “Mission Impossible” adventure.
#2: “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”
Release Date: May 6, 2022
When this magical Doctor portals into theaters for his sequel, he’ll bring along the powerful Scarlet Witch. Whether she’s there to help or pursue her own goals is unknown. Wanda’s role is just one of the many exciting details about this mystical movie. Twenty years after Sam Raimi directed the pivotal “Spider-Man” movie, we’ll see him bring his talents to Dr. Strange’s sequel. Since the director has given us iconic superhero action scenes before, we fully expect him to put Strange and Wanda into an awe-inspiring sequence. And there are also rumors that the MCU’s first mutant might appear in the movie too. Can Dr. Strange cast a spell that lets us see this anticipated movie sooner?
#1: “The Batman”
Release Date: March 4, 2022
Gotham’s about to be full of fight scenes, car chases and explosions. And Robert Pattinson’s Batman will be standing at the center of it all. Although he’s definitely more unhinged than usual, he’s still dedicated to ending crime. Batman will face off against Paul Dano's Riddler and Colin Ferrell’s Penguin in a city-spanning battle. The first two trailers for the film have introduced tons of tantalizing mysteries, iconic characters and great dialogue. And director Matt Reeves will helm the project years after giving us the well-written and action-packed “War for the Planet of the Apes”. Even after seeing more than a few Batman movies over the years, there’s something about this new story that makes us more eager than ever to return to Gotham.
