Welcome to MojoPlays, and this is our list of our favorite Zombie Plagues in Video Games! Who said the zombie apocalypse can't be fun? While we await the inevitable era where humanity fights its own undead corpses, these games will put the laughter in slaughter or the psycho in psychopathic.
Welcome to MojoPlays, and this is our list of our favorite Zombie Plagues in Video Games! Who said the zombie apocalypse can’t be fun? While we await the inevitable era where humanity fights its own undead corpses, these games will put the laughter in slaughter or the psycho in psychopathic.

“Dead Rising” series (2006-17)

While the zombies of the “Dead Rising” series can become a real threat when left alone, just about anything can kill them. No joke, you can grab practically whatever you can get your hands on and start your own murder spree! Baseball bats, chainsaws, lawnmowers, shotguns, and even a Mega Buster are at your disposal. Some titles will even let you combine items to create crazier weapons! (You should see what you can do with a few chainsaws strapped to a shopping cart…) Few games will dumb down its enemies for you to indulge in some careless fun, which is what makes the “Dead Rising” games so memorable.

Necroa Virus

“Plague, Inc.” (2012)

The Necroa Virus is, perhaps, the most fun yet difficult challenge in “Plague, Inc.” After you’ve killed off humanity with bacteria, viruses, and fungi, the game opens up a new campaign where you’ll have to infect, kill, and raise an army of the dead in order to win. However, humanity will do more to fight back even after the search for a cure fails. Players will quickly meet the Z-Com army and will have to use DNA points to try and overwhelm its bases. Trust us - this is harder than it may sound, but this is what made the Necroa Virus such an entertaining part of “Plague, Inc.”

“Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse” (2005)

You don’t see too many zombie games with a comedic tone to its world, which is precisely why “Stubbs the Zombie” is so memorable. Whereas “Plague, Inc” had you control a virus like some omniscient overlord, “Stubbs the Zombie” lets you control the titular character and start the zombie apocalypse with your own rotting teeth! (Think “Pikmin” but with more or less brains.) For the few of us that played the game, “Stubbs” succeeded in bringing out our cannibalistic side. That’s right! Cower, humans! I am your god, and you will all become part of my zombie army!! Mwahahahahahahahaaaa!!

“The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned”

“Borderlands” (2009)

“Borderlands” was already a hyperactive child of a game, and it only got crazier when its first DLC - “The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned” - dropped a month after launch. Dr. Zed’s evil twin brother, Dr. Ned, has turned all of the inhabitants of Jakobs’ Cove into zombies, and it is up to you to stop him. Along with new weapons and locations, this expansion brought more of the deranged “Borderlands” humor we had come to love while also making a few pop culture references. Just try not to mix Ned up with Zed. Remember - Ned has the suspicious moustache!

“Call of Duty” series (2003-)

Whereas our previous entries have shown us good times in the zombie apocalypse (well...to some degree), the “Call of Duty” series has painted a much darker picture. Thanks to the franchise’s long-running “Zombies” mode, we’ve seen the walking dead at their most brutal, able to overwhelm any player in great numbers. It doesn’t help that there are so many different zombies that can easily disorient us or destroy armor in a single hit. (Damn you, Panzermordor!) Despite all our frustrations, the difficulty and tense moments is what has made the Zombies mode such a must-have in future “CoD” installments.

The Plague of Undeath

“Warcraft III” (2002) & “World of Warcraft” (2004)

As with many of its stories, the “Warcraft” universe told a compelling tale that involved a massive zombie plague inflicted by the Lich King. This was to weaken any opposing forces come the time he invaded Lordaeron and its neighboring kingdoms. A paladin-turned-knight named Arthas Menethil was tasked in stopping the undead scourge, but in his quest for power; the cursed blade Frostmourne made him a Death Knight fighting for the undead. As troubling as this tale is, the “Warcraft” universe has provided players a new experience with the Undead class, offering a playstyle that focuses less on resource management and more on building swarms and strong magic.

“Left 4 Dead” series (2008-09)

There are plenty of reasons why we keep coming back to slaughter more zombies in “Left 4 Dead”. Every run will greet you with hordes of zombies ready to tear into your flesh like kids hearing about an exclusive “Fortnite” pickaxe. Don’t expect to face your typical, “brainssss…” zombie, either; the “Left 4 Dead” games house various types of Infected like the constantly-vomiting Boomer or the wailing Witch. Of course, the game will throw a few curveballs specific to whichever location you’re in. But one thing remains consistent; the horde of zombies will just keep coming.

T-Virus Outbreak

“Resident Evil” series (1996-)

It is perhaps the most notorious zombie outbreak in gaming history. The more you play the “Resident Evil” games and learn about the T-virus, the more often you’ll be asking “Who in the absolute hell ever thought this was a good idea!?” Since the T-virus outbreak began, it has lead to the creation of terrifying creatures such as Lickers, mutated animals, and the dreaded brutes known as Tyrants. We’ll never understand how the Umbrella Corporation continues to fail in containing the virus, but there’s a small part of us that doesn’t want the terror to end. Besides, how else can we see something like Mr. X in a speedo?
