Soulcalibur V: Everything You Should Know

It is a tale of souls and swords that is eternally retold. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re filling you in on everything you should know about Soulcalibur V.

Developed by Bandi-Namco’s internal Project Soul team once again, the latest entry in the tournament-style fighting series takes place 17 years after the events of Soulcalibur IV. That game ended with Nightmare, the living incarnation of the demonic blood soaked Soul Edge sword being vanquished by Siegfried, the games’ protagonist, who was once under its control.

Soulcalibur V is centered on a new protagonist named Patroklos. He is the son of the divine fighter Sophita who had died after coming in contact with the Soul Edge, which infects its victims with evil.

Along the way he encounters his long lost sister Pyrrha, who was kidnapped as a child and wields nearly identical armaments.

They must each battle various challengers in order to gain possession of the pure Soulcalibur sword in order to stop a new and more powerful incarnation of Nightmare from consuming the world.

Of course, players can select from many other characters, each with their own unique motivations. In this game, new fighters make up about half of its long roster of 30 selectable characters.

Returning characters include the likes of Siegfried, Cervantes de Leon, his cursed daughter Ivy who is unable to age, the vengeance-seeking pirate Maxi, as well as the blind and mute Voldo.

SoulCalibur V also introduces Ezio Auditorie from Assassins Creed series as a guest playable fighter, and once again lets you create your own custom character. In this Character Creation Mode, you can once again change most aspects of your appearance, including your physical attributes, clothing and armor.

For this chapter in the story of a the battle between good and evil, as told with two opposing swords, the Soul Edge and Soul Calibur have been redesigned into lighter, sharper and more elegant weapons. Because of this, combat is more fluid, with less heavy pauses between strikes.

As far as overall gameplay is concerned, it retains its free-flowing style, simultaneously appealing to die-hards of the genre and button mashers. In other words, its easy to play and difficult to master. What is new is its use of a powerful Critical Edge attack. Filling up a special bar in incremental stages, it is eventually able to dish out massive damage, and cannot be blocked.

With over 20 traversable 3D stages to compete in, players will find themselves fighting through many wondrous and thrilling locations. These include Mt. Fuji, an Ancient Citadel, a Torture Chamber, a sinking merchant ship, and a Cavern, just to name a few.

A tournament series that has left its mark since appearing in arcades in 1998, Soulcalibur V will surely thrill fighting fans, with its improved focus on story and fluidity in combat.
