10 Story Threads Mortal Kombat Abandoned

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at 10 Story Threads “Mortal Kombat” Abandoned.

With the number of timeline resets and characters that have come and gone, “Mortal Kombat” has retconned so many stories. These are only a handful we’ve noticed. Which story do you think was the strangest for the series to throw away? Let us know down in the comments.

All Those Guest Characters

Now, let us preface this by addressing the whole thing about guest fighters. Yes, we do know that they are always considered non-canon, nothing more than fun additions for players to mess around with. But just think - how cool would it have been for Joker to actually team up with Havik and lead Chaosrealm to conquering another realm? Or if Jason Voorhees was some servant of Quan Chi and Shang Tsung who slaughters people just to supply them with souls for Netherrealm’s army? Perhaps they don’t have canonical stories because it would just screw up the lore more than it already has.

Shujinko and the Kamidogou

One of the coolest aspects of “Mortal Kombat: Deception” was the Konquest mode where you play as Shujinko as he takes on the rest of the MK cast in an effort to collect the Kamidogou and stop Onaga. And this was a story that was never touched upon again (not counting any arcade endings, of course). It’s a real shame, too, because Onaga was such an awesome villain and a nice break from the usual “Grawh, I’m Shao Kahn, I claim your Realm, you suck!” Granted, it is rumored that MK1 will bring back Onaga, but it is only a rumor. Hey, if they’re bringing back Shujinko, surely Onaga is in the game, too, right? …Right?

Li Mei

For those unfamiliar, Li Mei was first introduced in “Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance” and would appear in “Deception” and “Armageddon” afterwards. Her story didn’t have much of a role in “Mortal Kombat”, but she and the rest of her village were captured and forced to build Shang Tsung’s palace close to the Soulnado. And that’s just about as much narrative as she got until MKX where her village was destroyed by Mileena. Luckily, MK1 is giving her a bigger role than she ever had as a royal guard for Kitana and Mileena.

Zombie Liu Kang

Back in the 3D era of “Mortal Kombat”, we got a really weird story between Liu Kang and Raiden. After defeating Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, Raiden went full villain and resurrected Liu Kang as a zombie. Yeah, it was a story arc that made no sense for either character and went on for both “Deception” and “Armageddon”. Though we did see Liu Kang become a servant to Quan Chi in MKX, we’re sort of glad the franchise ditched this whole concept.

Hsu Hao

For those unfamiliar, consider yourselves lucky! Hsu Hao is the dumbest, lamest, worst character to ever be added to “Mortal Kombat”! Why so much hatred? First of all, just look at his design! He looks like Kano watched too many Dick Dastardly & Muttley cartoons and thought, “Yes! That! I need to be THAT and nothing else!!” And then, his fatalities - they suck. Though he only ever appeared in “Deadly Alliance” and “Armageddon”, we will never understand why he’s made as many cameos as he has. Look, we’re okay with him being an occasional Easter egg, but he just has no business being anywhere in these games.

Raiden the Thunder God

“Mortal Kombat 1” is definitely going to be an interesting entry on account of how many characters have different roles and backstories now. Take Raiden, for example. Since the first game back in 1992, we have known Raiden as the Thunder God, Earthrealm’s protector, and a former Elder God. But in MK1, he is just Raiden, a simple monk who lives in the same village as Kung Lao. Funny how he and Liu Kang have essentially switched roles now.

The Cage Family Tree

Speaking of characters with changed backstories, the previous NRS timeline was kind of interesting in how Johnny and Sonya got together and even had a kid. Before MKX and MK11, they were only friends who worked in Special Forces together. But with MK1 resetting the timeline, this marriage is gone. Poof! No love story, no chance for Johnny Cage to yell “FAMILY” like Vin Diesel, and no Cassie Cage. Wait a minute…no Cassie in the new timeline? Then, that means…

The MKX Kids

That’s right! With our new MK1 timeline, that means none of the MKX kids ever happened! Now, say what you will about them, but Cassie, Jacqui, Takeda, and Kung Jin were the most contentious aspects of MKX. Half of the community loved them, and the other half wanted them erased as if we got four Hsu Haos. Though Takeda is going to be added into MK1 as a DLC fighter, we highly doubt his story will have much of a role in the main game, let alone whatever expansion might come after launch. As to whether or not we’ll ever see Cassie, Jacqui, or Kung ever again, well, we aren’t holding our breath.

Hanzo & Bi-Han

Well, talk about aging like spoiled milk. Our 10 MK1 Predictions video immediately expired the second we were all told the new Scorpion and Sub-Zero are Bi-Han and Kuai Liang. And what of Hanzo Hasashi? Where is he? Chances are NRS might be doing away with him entirely. After all, his story did get a satisfying close in MK11. Maybe now is a good time to explore a “Mortal Kombat” game where the Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei aren’t at each other’s throats.

Armageddon

In a sense, NRS sort of did and didn’t abandon the story from “Armageddon”. Granted, the game was mostly made to serve as a celebration of “Mortal Kombat”. With a roster that big, no duh. But by this point, the lore and story was all over the place with no rhyme or reason for anything. So, a reset was needed badly! We gotta commend the way it was retconned, though, and how it set forth a new era for “Mortal Kombat”, its approach to story modes in fighting games, and bringing a bit more focus back to the characters that matter. We suppose you could say “MK: Armageddon” was a necessary evil for the entire FGC.
