The Big Bang Theory’s Penny & Leonard vs. Amy & Sheldon vs. Howard & Bernadette
Welcome to MsMojo and in this installment of Versus, we’re stacking up three of “TBBT’s” strongest couples to see which love story reigns supreme.
Round 1: Funnier Dynamic
The outline of “TBBT’s” first three seasons revolved around Penny and Leonard. Because of this, the show derived a lot of its humor from this pair. Before getting together, their funny situations usually involve Leonard trying to impress her, only to fail miserably. As a couple, the jokes turn to Leonard messing things up before trying to win Penny back. This tried-and-tested style usually works but doesn’t exactly put their relationship in the most positive light.
Amy and Sheldon are almost like Leonard and Penny but without most of the guilt treatment. We usually see Amy putting up with Sheldon’s antics, although she manages to outsmart him more than once. Watching Sheldon be perplexed and endeared by Amy is always fun. Along with making for a wonderfully kooky pair, every laugh is followed by a new step forward in their relationship.
In earlier seasons, Bernadette and Howard’s comedic moments play into her naivete. Where others think he’s annoying, she finds him charming. It’s also funny seeing his reaction whenever she behaves out of character. As a married couple, their dynamic shifts to Bernadette’s exasperation toward his immaturity. Still, this sets up plenty of one-liners where Bernadette proves she’s an absolute savage.
With material that’s equally humorous and wholesome, it’s Shamy who wins this round.

Round 2: Relationship Strength
Leonard and Penny’s “Will they/Won’t They?” energy keeps fans invested for several seasons. It also means that, for as many things that make them great, many don’t work. Her commitment issues and his desire to move fast initially ended their relationship. It takes many years and a few more heartbreaks before they’re where they want to be. Married life is surprisingly smoother than we might have thought, but it takes a lot of personal growth before these two finally settle their issues.
Sure, Amy pines after an emotional and physical commitment that Sheldon keeps delaying. And yet, we see that Sheldon genuinely cares for Amy, going out of his way for her like he would never do for anyone else. Amy’s acceptance empowers Sheldon to evolve, realizing he can give love a chance with the right person. True, they did break up, but this only strengthened their reconciliation. It’s a romance built around patience, growth, and understanding, proving that the one who accepts you for your flaws ultimately makes you a better person.
Howard and Bernadette’s steady progress makes them the “TBBT’s” most enduring relationship. Their only breakup was more of a gag than a serious storyline. He brings laughter and joy to Bernadette while she provides him with the care and support he desperately wants. They aren’t always on the same page, but their bond is never seriously tested. Of course, there are times when Bernadette is frustrated by his antics, causing her to be rather mean-spirited toward him.
And so, with a relationship that’s both empowering and nurturing, it’s Shamy who runs away with the round again.

Round 3: Romantic Moments
When your boyfriend brings you an everlasting snowflake preserved from the North Pole, you know he’s a keeper. You also don’t wanna let go of a girl who treasures every keepsake from your relationship. Leonard and Penny’s romance might be flawed, but it’s beautiful at its best. From multiple proposals, prom dances, and blankets with sleeves, these two know how to make our hearts melt time and again.
Fans spent years waiting for Sheldon and Amy to go all the way. But they’ve had cutesy moments right from the get-go. These tend to take both audiences and Amy by surprise. After all, who could see that big train kiss coming? This unconventionally heartwarming couple makes us squeal through every relationship milestone. Whether as simple as holding hands or as big as that “I love you” moment, this couple never fails to make us go “aww” with their adorably geeky romance.
Early-season viewers who thought Howard would always be a creep were proven wrong. After meeting his better half, Howard transforms into the perfect partner. He brings us arguably the show’s crowning moment of romance. The song commemorating the anniversary of his and Bernie’s first date remains swoon-worthy as ever, highlighting why these two are meant to be. Although they aren’t without grand displays of affection, Howard and Bernadette’s best moments are the most true-to-life of all “TBBT’s” couples.
With each pair excelling in the romance department, this round ends in a tie.

Round 4: Better First Meeting
The show wouldn’t have been the hit it was without a solid first episode. We have Leonard and Penny’s first meeting to thank for it. As if plucked straight out of a rom-com movie, our hero sets sight on our heroine and falls in love at first sight. And just like that, we’re shipping these two for the rest of the series. The instant chemistry sets the platform not just for their romance, but for the show overall.
Fans should be grateful to Howard and Raj for forcing Sheldon to meet Amy. Of course, they also hit it off immediately, finding something strangely alluring about the other. Shamy’s first meeting is the perfect cliffhanger to end the season, leaving fans excited to see how this love story will play out. It’s also fun to return back to this moment and see just how much these two changed over the years.
For a couple as long-lasting as Howard and Bernadette, their first meeting leaves a lot to be desired. Unsure of what to expect, neither has a clue how to start things up. It takes mutual annoyance of their mothers to get these future love birds going, with the pair finding the weirdest middle ground to bond over. Although it ends up as a surprisingly pleasant first date, it pales in comparison to their ensuing relationship.
With a meet-cute that’s stood the test of time, it’s Leonard and Penny who claim this round.

Round 5: Character Arc
If you want to sum up this pair’s journey, look no further than Stuart’s explanation. With Penny by his side, Leonard finds the self-worth and self-acceptance he severely lacked. Thanks to Leonard’s influence, Penny sees that committing yourself to love and friendship can liberate you in more ways than one. For all the trips and stumbles they make, accepting one another through it all makes Leonard and Penny’s coupling such an enduring relationship.
Amy succinctly explains the influence she has on Sheldon. Sure, there was some trickery involved, but Amy uncovers a whole new world for Sheldon that he never could’ve imagined. Falling in love with him also allows Amy to pull down the walls she’d put up around herself. Having once behaved like a female Sheldon, Amy shows her true self as a kind, empathic person when she has someone to love her. All in all, these two complete each other in every possible way.
Like the previous couples, we have another speech that sums up how Howard changed because of Bernadette. Starting off creepy and obsessed with the opposite sex, Howard not only sheds these traits but regards them with disgust. Because of Bernadette, he learns to respect women and what a relationship entails. Meanwhile, Bernadette overcomes her doubts about being a mother, embracing parenthood, and raising a family with Howard’s support. Still, the added stress does turn her meaner than before, so it comes with a catch.
With an arc about becoming the best versions of themselves, it’s Shamy who triumphs once again.
Amy & Sheldon 4/ Leonard & Penny 2/ Howard & Bernadette 1
Round 6: Better Proposal & Wedding
Leonard and Penny went through multiple proposals before their official engagement, which many consider the show’s best. It’s a shame their first wedding crashed and burned – even with Penny’s “Toy Story” vows – as Leonard’s confession about his activities in the North Sea puts a damper on things. However, their second wedding is as wonderful as it gets. With all their friends and respective families in attendance, Leonard and Penny no longer have any reservations about displaying their love for the world to see.
Like most of their milestone moments, the Shamy proposal happens when least expected. Realizing there really is no woman for him than Amy, Sheldon hops on a plane across the country to pop the question. Coming from the least spontaneous person out there, this means a lot. They go one better at their wedding, coming up with the super-asymmetry concept that ultimately wins them the Nobel Prize. With a wedding gown of Amy’s choice and Luke Skywalker himself officiating, Shamy’s special day only gets better with each passing minute.
Admittedly, Howard and Bernadette’s proposal is pretty low-key. But their nuptials brought fans their first taste of a grand wedding on the show. Despite things working against them – and the small matter of Howard leaving the planet shortly after – we don’t doubt the couple would have it any other way. An impromptu roof wedding with each member of the group officiating? It doesn’t get more wholesome than this. The event set the benchmark for other couples to follow, and we’re happy the show followed through.
Since each pair brings their own spin to their big day, this round ends in a tie!
Amy & Sheldon 5/ Leonard & Penny 3/ Howard & Bernadette 1
Round 7: Communication
A lot of Leonard and Penny’s problems would have been nipped in the bud had they openly communicated. Fear of rejection or issues with confrontation got in their way, making their problems worse than they would otherwise be. Their catastrophic first breakup or Penny’s reluctance to have children could’ve been avoided if their pair were open about their doubts and feelings. While it all works out in the end, Leonard and Penny’s communication skills don’t quite match up with their friends.
Although Sheldon’s a handful, Amy not only puts up with him but also figures him out. By showering Sheldon with all the attention he wants, Amy gets him to reciprocate even if he doesn’t realize it. Their form of communication is entirely unique and only applies to them. Over the years, we watch as they share their insecurities and flaws without fear of judgment. It isn’t always easy getting Sheldon to care beyond himself, but Amy excels where few have succeeded.
Bernadette’s no-nonsense approach means that Howard is always kept in check. But Bernie has a sympathetic ear for her husband when needed. Consoling him over his mother’s passing, Bernadette is Howard’s rock during the most difficult time of his life. The pair make their marriage and career work, compromising where it matters for their family to thrive. No problem seems big enough for these two, facing any challenge life throws at them with both spouses firmly at the other’s side.
With Howard and Bernadette displaying the most positive communication skills, this round belongs to them.
Amy & Sheldon 5/ Leonard & Penny 3/ Howard & Bernadette 2
Shamy might just be “The Big Bang Theory’s” most popular duo and we can see why. While the other two couples are great in their own regard, it’s hard to top Shamy. Equal parts quirky, equal parts bonkers, and completely in love, this couple represents the best of the show’s humor, heart, and wonderfully nerdy premise.
