The Evolution of Zac Efron
Oh how a young star can change over the years. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be discussing The Evolution of Zac Efron.
For this video, we’ll be tracing the career of this heartthrob, examining the phases that he's gone on through over the course of his career en route to becoming the man we know today!
Zachary David Alexander Efron was born on October 18th, 1987. Both of his parents worked at a nearby power plant. While Zac culturally identifies with his Jewish heritage, the household was an agnostic one; he didn’t observe or follow any specific religion growing up. By all accounts, including that of Zac himself, his California upbringing was a fairly normal, middle-class one. He claims to have had no aspirations of stardom, once telling theater critic Richard Ouzounian that he “didn't even know this business existed." From an early age however, he showed a penchant for theatrics, an interest in music and was notably a bit of a perfectionist in school. In short, he had the makings of a performer.
Having begun taking piano and vocal lessons at a young age, Efron’s natural abilities quickly became too evident to ignore. And so, at 11 years old, with the encouragement of both his father and his piano teacher, Zac began working with the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts. He landed himself a role in the musical Gypsy, and more opportunities soon followed, including roles in productions of Peter Pan and Little Shop of Horrors. People were taking notice of his potential, and Efron eventually penned a deal with L.A.’s Creative Arts Agency. His first TV role was actually in the cult classic series, “Firefly”, in 2002. Bit parts on “ER” and some smaller films soon followed, but his earliest notable success was his supporting role on the WB drama, “Summerland”.
Efron was making waves in the industry, but when he came to the attention of Disney, that’s when his life really changed. The House of Mouse takes promising teen performers and turns them into icons. And that’s exactly what “High School Musical” did for Zach Efron. It may have been made-for-tv, but it became a cultural phenomenon. All of a sudden, Zac Efron and his distinct swoop haircut were gracing the cover of various teen magazines and the lockers of tweens everywhere. Two sequels followed and, after a minor controversy about someone else doing his singing, Efron made sure that his voice made the final cut in the equally massive sequels.
By the time the “High School Musical” trilogy wrapped up in 2008, Efron had become an international teen icon and an omnipresent pop culture figure. This was only further bolstered by his role in the 2007 adaptation of “Hairspray”. For all his success, however, Efron was at risk of becoming typecast and so he began boldly pushing for a wider audience by taking on more diverse and mature roles. “Me and Orson Welles” proved that he was more than just a heartthrob, and while roles in the likes of “17 Again” and “Charlie St. Cloud” didn’t exactly alienate his old fans, they showed that he could make it without Disney. This was further hammered home with his roles in “The Lucky One”, “The Paperboy” and “Parkland”. None were critical darlings, but they all feel like crucial stepping stones in Efron’s growth as an actor.
Unfortunately, like so many of his fellow House of Mouse alumni, Efron began to struggle with issues of substance abuse during this transitional phase. In 2014, Zac Efron came clean with the public about his demons. After two 2013 stints in rehab and a much publicized altercation with a homeless man, Efron explained that he’d been drinking “way too much”. There were drugs in the mix as well, which, a few years later, he’d eventually acknowledge. He was attempting to redefine himself as a respected, adult leading man, but pouring his heart and soul into one overlooked film after another — often shot back-to-back — was taking its toll. Years of unending media scrutiny can’t have helped either.
As Efron retrospectively explained in 2016, he didn’t just need to overcome his addictions, but his fear as well. And in 2014 he initiated that change. Not only did he return to the hobbies of his youth (many of which he’d given up to accommodate his career), and establish healthier habits, but he pushed himself as an actor by venturing into comedy. Efron’s past roles had often incorporated elements of comedy, but an overt laugh-out-loud comedy was new territory. With the release of “Neighbors” in 2014, however, Efron showed everyone that he had a bright future in the genre. “That Awkward Moment” further solidified that Efron was a new man, and over the next few years, he delivered one gut-busting performance after another in the likes of “Dirty Grandpa”, “Baywatch” and numerous others. As these clips already make plenty clear… he also got superhero level ripped.
Though Zac Efron could easily have committed to comedy and simply stuck with that. But as his career trajectory reminds us, he’s a performer who’d rather not be put in a box. In 2017, the same year as “Baywatch”, he also appeared in the oddball biographical dramedy “The Disaster Artist” and “The Greatest Showman”. The latter was a triumphant return to musicals for Efron, proving that he’s not unwilling to revisit old territory, so long as it’s on his terms. His biggest dramatic push however, came in 2019, when he played real life serial killer Ted Bundy in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile”. The actor received widespread acclaim for his dangerously charismatic performance. It left little doubt as to Efron’s range as a performer.
Though Efron’s physique in “Baywatch” was certainly remarkable, the actor has since toned down his fitness regimen. It feels like a natural extension of the shift that he began in 2014 when he first started prioritizing his well being — both physical and mental. In 2020, he got his Netflix original travel series, appropriately titled “Down to Earth”. Now in his thirties, the actor seems to be taking things a little bit slower, approaching life in a more contemplative manner. Don’t get us wrong, he’s still got a rockin’ bod, it’s just more natural and feels like a reflection of the philosophical changes he’s made. “Down To Earth” has faced criticism for pushing pseudoscientific products and dubious health claims, but there’s no denying that as a host Efron is incredibly relatable and brings energy to the series.
All things considered, it would seem that Zac Efron has come to a place where he’s feeling comfortable in his skin, as well as the trajectory of his career. He’s prioritizing his well-being and putting his happiness ahead of the celebrity rulebook. During the pandemic, he’s been spending time in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia. Given that he’s an avid surfer and skateboarder, it makes sense! And while it might break the hearts of American fans hoping to catch a glimpse of him in L.A., we’re happy to see him following his heart.
And that’s the evolution of Zac Efron! Or rather, his evolution so far. As his life and career to date has shown us, he’s a person who refuses to stand still and is always looking to take on new challenges and improve himself. Considering everything he’s accomplished to date, we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
