The Life and Career of Actress Demi Moore
She’s gone from being Hollywood’s highest paid actress to human rights advocate. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re taking a look at the life and career of Demi Moore.
She was born Demetria Guynes on November 11th, 1962 in Roswell, New Mexico. Raised under harsh circumstances, she never knew her biological father, as he fled months before her birth. In addition, she suffered from a kidney dysfunction and being cross-eyed, which required her to wear and eye patch, before undergoing two corrective surgeries.
Up until adolescence, her stepfather frequently changed jobs, forcing her family to constantly relocate. Meanwhile, she and her two half-brothers were subjected to their parents becoming increasingly violent alcoholics.
Eventually settling down in the late 70s, Demi enrolled at Fairfax Highschool in Los Angeles Hollywood. There she attended classes with others who would become celebrities. These included the front man and bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as actor Timothy Hutton.
At only age 16, Demi dropped out to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress. Two years later, she had married singer Freddy Moore, who was twelve years her senior. Meanwhile, she found work as a model.
This in turn helped her make her film debut in 1982’s 3D sci-fi horror film “Parasite.” Afterward, she achieved recognition for here stint as Jackie Templeton on the soap opera “General Hospital.”
In the years that followed, the young actress went on to star in several youth films. These saw her play Michael Caine’s daughter in “Blame it on Rio”, Jon Cryer’s love interest in “No Small Affair”, and struggle with life after college alongside fellow teens in “St. Elmo’s Fire.”
Unfortunately, her marriage deteriorated after only four brief years. Going on to date fellow Brat Pack member Emilio Estevez, she soon remarried, this time to actor Bruce Willis in 1987.
Not long after, Moore skyrocketed to the top of the Hollywood A-list. This was the result of starring opposite Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg in 1990’s box-office hit “Ghost.”
Going on to have three daughters with Willis, Moore retained her previous marriage’s surname, while sparking a media frenzy in ’91. This was due to appearing naked on the cover of Vanity Fair while carrying their second child. This turned out to be the result of a simple idea to challenge perceptions about women and pregnancy. She simultaneously became one of the founding members of Planet Hollywood, along with her then-husband, and action stars Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Next, Demi Moore returned to major box-office success opposite Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson in 1992’s “A Few Good Men.” She followed this up the next year by playing a married woman offered a million dollars to sleep with a lonely Billionaire in the drama “Indecent Proposal”, before sexually harassing Michael Douglas in 1994’s steamy thriller “Disclosure.”
It was at this time that she broke the preverbal glass ceiling for women in Hollywood when she made a ten million dollar paycheck for voicing a character in Disney’s 1996 animated film “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” At the same time, she remained a Hollywood favorite, starring in such films as “The Scarlet Letter”, “Striptease” and “The Juror.” However, none of these, including “G.I. Jane”, which had her shaved away all of her hair, could match her earlier appeal.
With the millennium drawing to a close, so did her marriage to Bruce Willis in 2000. Taking a break from acting, she would only return to the silver screen in 2003 to play the villain in “Charlie Angels’ Full Throttle.” Taking on various lower profile releases in the years since, she soon met and married actor Ashton Kutcher in 2005, who was fifteen years her junior. Adopting his name shortly afterwards, she has since keeping her professional name unchanged.
While not the Hollywood juggernaut that she once was, Demi Moore continues to spark interest due to her presence on Twitter, her relationship with Ashton Kutcher, and for her work tackling the child sex trade.
