Top 10 Accidental Movie Kisses
#10: A Cheeky Christmas
“Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000)
In this adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ perennial classic, the titular Grinch expresses his hatred for Christmas in many ways, but here he does it by telling Whoville to pucker up and kiss his butt. And while his green posterior never actually makes contact with any Who-lips, the Grinch does seize the opportunity to humiliate his lifelong rival, the mayor of Whoville, by introducing the mayor’s face to his dog’s butt. It might be immature, but admit it; the 10-year-old in you still thinks it’s hilarious. Between Max’s bulging eyes and the oblivious grin on the sleeping Mayor’s face, this accidental kiss is sure to have some viewers barking with laughter, and others searching for breath mints.
#9: Mice United
“An American Tail” (1986)
You’ll find throughout this list that accidental kisses are especially common in animated movies. Our first notable example is this charming smooch from “An American Tail.” In the film, Fievel’s street-smart friend Tony Toponi immediately becomes smitten with outspoken rabble-rouser Bridget. The attraction is mutual and these two New Yorkers suddenly find themselves in la-la land. Eager to search for his family, Fievel attempts to pull Tony away. This only brings them closer together, however, causing Tony’s lips to bump into Bridget’s. Sparks literally fly between these mice, with heart-shaped fireworks exploding around them when they touch. America is truly a romantic place… even if it is overrun with cats.
#8: Hot Stuff
“The Three Caballeros” (1944)
This film leans heavily on its Latin American setting, showing Donald Duck as he travels to various countries in the company of his fellow caballeros, Panchito and José. Sure, he takes in some culture, but in Acapulco, Donald is primarily interested in beautiful women. As if he’s about to crack open a piñata, Donald throws on a blindfold and chases after them. The lovely human ladies playfully tease him, but (unsurprisingly) none of them is particularly interested in actually getting with a duck. When Panchito and José catch up to their friend, Donald assumes that he’s won a señorita’s affection. He eagerly presses his beak up against José and lays a few on him.
#7: Bad Timing
“She’s the Man” (2006)
Taking a page from Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” this gender-bending farce centers on a young woman name Viola, who poses as her brother Sebastian to play competitive soccer. Naturally, misunderstandings and complications abound. Olivia, a girl at the school, soon develops a crush on Sebastian… aka Viola. When the real Sebastian comes home early, Olivia decides to show him how she feels. Sebastian is totally caught off guard, but more than enthusiastic about the unexpected kiss. Talk about getting something for nothing! Sure, it’s the result of a tangled web of deceit, but Sebastian’s reaction is priceless. And hey, if young love is going to be so complicated, it might as well be funny too.
#6: Shut Up and Kiss Me
“Ratatouille” (2007)
Linguini has little experience in the culinary arts and even less when it comes to women. Fortunately, he has a loyal wingman in his corner. Of course when we say “wingman,” we actually mean “wingrat,” and when we say “in his corner,” we actually mean “under his hat.” When the bumbling Linguini attempts to come clean to his co-worker Colette, he can’t quite get the words out. As he prepares to show her his “little chef”, she prepares her pepper spray. To avert crisis, Remy the rat takes control and forces Linguini to kiss her. She’s swept off her feet in the true spirit of Parisian romance. Did Remy overstep? Sure. But Linguini certainly isn’t arguing with the results.
#5: Plucking a Delicate Flower
“Bambi” (1942)
Although Bambi, Thumper, and Flower are reluctant to fall in love, they can’t avoid the romantic sentiment that engulfs the forest during springtime. Flower is the first to fall on the battlefield of love when a female skunk catches his eye. He might be too bashful to speak, but sometimes actions speak louder than words – even the unintentional ones. Turning your head quickly with your eyes closed is usually ill advised, but it certainly works out for Flower. He accidentally kisses the object of his affection and becomes stiffer than a board. The answer to the old riddle: “what’s black and white and red all over?” A skunk that just got his first kiss, apparently!
#4: Worst Twins Ever
“EuroTrip” (2004)
Some accidental kisses are memorably adorable; others stick with us for more traumatizing reasons. It’s no secret that people tend to make huge mistakes while drinking, especially when they’re on vacation in Europe. After having one too many glasses of absinthe, Jamie finds himself French-kissing a beautiful woman. Although his friends are initially jealous, they change their tune upon realizing that Jamie is kissing his twin sister, Jenny. Even the hallucinogenic green fairy is grossed out. As the make out session comes to a close, the twins take a step backwards and realize whom they’ve been smooching. This accidental kiss leaves them screaming in horror... while the audience screams with laughter.
#3: Brand’s Braces
“The Goonies” (1985)
Mikey Walsh is an awkward young teen with braces and asthma. Although some might consider him a nerd, how many boys of that description have kissed a cheerleader? With her eyes closed, Andy prepares to kiss the athletic Brand, but instead gets his younger brother. The two share a passionate kiss against a waterfall in silhouette, taking Mikey’s breath away. Kissing Brand later on, Andy realizes that she got the wrong brother the first time around. Brand may get the girl in the end, but Mikey appears to overcome his need for an asthma inhaler, so who really comes up on top? It’s a hilarious, but innocent case of mistaken identity in one truly classic movie.
#2: Nobody Likes a Kiss Ass
“Shrek” (2001)
Shrek isn’t exactly your typical fairytale. Instead of a gallant knight with a noble steed, we get a green ogre with a wisecracking donkey. Although Princess Fiona is eager to share a romantic moment with her rescuer, Shrek doesn’t have time to kiss. He’s more concerned with saving his animal sidekick, who’s busy trying to thwart a dragon’s unwanted sexual advances. Just as Dragon is about to give Donkey a kiss, Shrek comes crashing in and takes his place. Dragon winds up giving Shrek a peck on the cheek… but doesn’t make contact with his face. It’s a hysterical bit of slapstick courtesy of everyone’s favorite least conventional hero.
#1: Spaghetti Kiss
“Lady and the Tramp” (1955)
Topping our list is not only the greatest accidental movie kiss of all time, but one of the most iconic kisses in film history… period. This budding relationship reaches its pivotal moment as the titular Lady and Tramp sit down to a romantic Italian dinner. With Tony and Joe setting the mood, the two dogs chow down on the same piece of spaghetti. Sure enough their mouths connect, resulting in a perfectly bashful puppy smooch. This kiss has gone down in cinematic history with good reason. In addition to being utterly romantic, it’s also cute, humorous, inventive, and truly heartfelt. In short, it’s pretty much the best mistake two dogs have ever made.
