Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we are counting down our picks for the Top 10 Anime Moments We Never Thought We Would See. For this list, we’re going to be looking at the anime scenes that defied belief, either due to coming out of nowhere or going against previous preconceptions. Do you have a total WTF anime story? Let us know in the comments!

#10: Gilgamesh the Hero

“Fate/Grand Order - Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia” (2019) Whether he be adorned in finery as an Archer-class Servant, or his modern bad boy look after being freed of the Holy Grail War, there’s always been one constant thread that has persisted when it comes to Gilgamesh; he’s an absolute douche. Prideful beyond words, there was nothing and nobody he wouldn’t skewer, all under the impression that everything was beneath him, and all life was his to toy with. At least until his appearance in Grand Order, wherein he was presented as a chill dude who seemed to value his subjects. Did he get laid or something? What is with this change?!

#9: Char vs Ribbons

“Gundam Build Fighters: Battlogue” (2017) Nobody does fanservice quite like Sunrise. In what is essentially fanfiction come to life, this OVA series presents the most famous faces across the Gundam franchise duking it out in virtual Gunpla battles. So, who’s on first? None other than two of the greatest villains to pilot a mobile suit. The original Gundam’s Char, and Gundam 00’s Ribbon. What’s crazier, outside the fact the Red Comet is taking on Setsuna’s nemesis, is that the show even acknowledges the fact Ribbons has the same voice actor who played Amuro…by having him transform into Amuro midway through the duel!

#8: The Matsuno Brothers

“Black Clover” (2017-) Now THIS is a crossover. During the Royal Knight Selection Exam, Asta and the rest of the magic knights are shocked to discover the rather gruesome and bizarre mage X is none other than Captain Rill in disguise. It’s a twist that’s so in your face that it might have distracted you from a certain set of sextuplets hiding in the background. That’s right, the stars of Mr Osomatsu apparently moved out of their parents’ house and headed over to the Clover Kingdom. To be honest, they’re probably more of a threat than Dante…

#7: Veldora Returns

“That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” (2018-) Remember when it was estimated that Rimuru wouldn’t be able to free Veldora from his eternal imprisonment for hundreds of years? Yeah, turns out when you’re a Demon Lord – time moves for YOU. Merely three days after his ascension, Rimuru is informed his first friend is finally able to be freed from his confinement. Not only do we get to see the Storm Dragon rise again, but he even gets himself a brand-new human body thrown in for free! Something tells us he’s going to make a splash in season three.

#6: Ao’s Alive…and EVIL?!

Top 10 Most Evil Anime Villains

“Boruto: Naruto Next Generations” (2017-) Not like the guy was the most important member of the Shinobi world, if anything he was only a side character in the events of the Fourth Great Ninja War, serving as a sensory type with an in-built Byakugan. And yet, Boruto decided to bring him back…as a disillusioned villain with in-built ninja tools. Yeah, it’s pretty perplexing. You’d think a former good guy going to the dark side would have plenty of impact, when truth be told this just feels like a step up from a filler villain!

#5: Sesshomaru and Rin Have Children

“Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon” (2020-) Inuyasha and Kagome getting together, bumping hips and starting a family? No questions asked, if anything it was almost inevitable. But Sesshomaru? The humanity-hating demon who was too cool for any of that lovely dovey crap? He ended up having a litter all his own? With Rin of all people?! Don’t get us wrong, their connection in the original show was certainly sweet…but then again when he first met he she was a young orphan. I guess time really does change things, right Sesshomaru? You dirty dog.

#4: Teppei Turns Over a New Leaf

“Higurashi When They Cry - Gou” (2020-) It’s official, this cycle is the craziest in the franchise’s history. Where else can you find Satoko’s uncle, the man who abused and degraded her to the point of insanity, suddenly becoming a decent person. Turns out the curse doesn’t just turn residents into raging psychopaths, sometimes it changes their worldview to the point where they can actually make amends. Which in itself is also kind of horrifying, since there’s no guarantee that this oddly pleasant route will remain. Better enjoy it while you can Satoko!

#3: Roger vs Whitebeard

“One Piece” (1999-) It was the flashback none of us knew we wanted, but turned out to be a highlight of the whole damn arc. Oh sure, everything happening with Luffy over in Wano is next level, but come on! You’ve got the King of the Pirates battling it out with the world’s strongest man, both in their prime, and both blasting out so much Haki it’s like it’s going out of fashion. As expected of two legends, the only thing more awesome than their fight scene is that after days of non-stop combat, they all become drinking buddies!

#2: Ash Becomes the Champion

“Pokémon” (1997-) There are some things in this world that one can comment on with absolute certainty. Water is wet, anime is cool, and Ash Ketchum does not win championships. For over twenty years, this would-be Pokémon Master has failed to earn himself a championship win, at least within the canon of the games. That all changed with his trip to the Alola region, where he not only won the whole thing, but did so with some of the greatest fights in the franchise’s history. Great job Ash, now you can move on to cracking puberty.

#1: Goku and Frieza Team Up

“Dragon Ball Super” (2015-18) It would take something no greater than the death of the universe to convince Frieza to ally himself with his sworn Saiyan nemesis. Unfortunately for him, the Tournament of Power was just around the corner, which spelled the end for countless lives in the multiverse. Thus, we got to see the space tyrant partner up with the Super Saiyan, to the point where both became the saviours of Universe 7 after taking down Jiren an explosive display of teamwork. Amazing how extinction can bring people together.
