Top 10 Anime Reveals Everyone Hated

Top 10 Anime Reveals Everyone Hated
VOICE OVER: Ashley Bowman WRITTEN BY: Alex Crilly-Mckean
These are the twists that sent the anime community off the rails. Join Ashley as he counts down the twists in anime that were not well received by fans, as seen in such hit series as "Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt", "Bleach", "Mars of Destruction", "Vampire Knight", "Erased", "Naruto Shippuden", "Darling in the Franxx", "Digimon Adventure 02", "Hyouka", and more!

#10: Yammy is Espada #0

“Bleach” (2004-12)

Turns out the hierarchical system among the Espada is little more…numerically challenged than fans may have first thought. Starting off as nothing more than a giant mound of muscle and anger, Yammy rested on the lowest end of the Arrancar spectrum. At least until it was revealed that after activating his Ressureccion, his number changed from ten to zero. Not only did this come out of nowhere, not only did it piss off all the Starrk fans, but it was ultimately pointless since Yammy got his ass handed to him by Byakuya and Zaraki swiftly after with minimal effort.

#9: Imaginary Confession

“Hyouka” (2012)

Forget the various mysteries the Classics Club have tackled, the intricacies of our four lead’s endearing friendship, forget about all that rite of passage, high school, hopes for the future crap. There’s only one thing we wanted the finale of this series to give us, and that was for Oreki to man the hell up and admit that he’s so in love with Chitanda that by his very admittance the animation would explode into colour. And he did…but it was all in his head. So much for spring.

#8: Demon Stocking

“Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt” (2010)

Granted, this pair of sinful angels got away with plenty of crazy stuff during their exploits on earth, including fighting a literal shit monster and Panty reaching her not-so-heavenly goal of boning a thousand dudes. So, it says a lot when even in the context of all that mess, the revelation that Stocking has been a demon this whole time and randomly chooses to slice up her sister was met with a resounding WTF. Given how there’s not a sequel in sight, we can chalk this one up to pure trolling.

#7: They’re Related!

“Vampire Knight” (2008)

Dealing with a shoujo audience can be quite a tricky tightrope. By all means present a love triangle between an innocent girl, her tortured childhood vampire friend and her suave childhood vampire crush, they’re all about that drama! However, the creator might have made something of a faux pas when they decided to make Kaname, by some weird, ritualistic logic both Yuki’s ancestor as well as her brother. Bad news for those fans that didn’t want incest in their romantic fang-fest of a ship, though we imagine all of Zero’s fans were hella relieved!

#6: Martians = Humans

“Mars of Destruction” (2005)

It’s pretty fitting that one of the worst anime ever made would also feature one of the lamest twists ever devised. As humanity is slowly pushed back by invaders from beyond the stars, aka crappy looking aliens cropping poorly rendered caricatures, one of them drops a bombshell at the last minute by announcing (le gasp) that THEY are the true humans and have returned to reclaim their world from the invaders! And that’s where it ends, and this anime can go burn in hell.

#5: VIRM

“Darling in the Franxx” (2018)

This is what happens when you only have the first fifteen episodes plotted and have someone else come in to tie things together. Just when it looked like the Klaxosaur Princess was shaping up to be our final villain, along comes this revelation that certain members of PAPA are…also aliens? And that the Klaxosaurs have been fighting them all this time for the sake of the planet and individuality? And this plot twist came out of nowhere during the last couple of episodes?

#4: Careers

“Digimon Adventure 02” (2000-01)

Everyone loves a good epilogue. We just wish that it gave each of the Digidestined we had come to adore a decent payoff instead providing them with the most bizarre of careers! Matt goes into space? Tai becomes a diplomat? None of the pre-established pairings go anywhere save for Yolei and Ken? Okay, so in the grand scheme of things it’s not so much the destination as it is the journey, but come on! Some of us die-hard digi-fans were banking on a little more than a slideshow of their real-world careers and a random assortment of kids!

#3: Kayo

“Erased” (2016)

Yes, we’re over the moon that Kayo was able to escape her dark fate and go on to live a happy life. No more abusive mother, no more murderous homeroom teacher, nothing except the chance to make something of herself and be with whoever she chooses…even if that someone isn’t Satoru. Yeah, the sight of a grown-up Kayo with her newborn might inspire joy, but then you’re reminded she has no idea what Satoru went through in order to save her life and keep her safe. That just stings.

#2: The Black Zetsu Incident

“Naruto: Shippuden” (2007-17)

All that hype, all that build up, and it all ended up…pretty much paying off when Madara Uchiha was finally introduced as the ultimate villain of the series, taking back his OG mantle by single-handedly wrecking the shinobi alliance army. So, what went wrong? They finished him off in the most unsatisfying way possible via Black Zetsu and shafted him off to the side to make way for a brand new final boss that had no lore, no gravitas and felt totally unnecessary by comparison! Go home Kaguya, you’re not wanted here.

#1: It’s Just a Game Bro!

“Dragon Quest: Your Story” (2019)

You were so close movie. You had a charming, little adventure with a lovely visual style that paid homage to Dragon Quest V while also making it accessible for newcomers to the franchise. Luca’s adventure was endearing, the animated battles were on point, honestly we were all onboard…up until the ending, wherein it was revealed that the whole thing had just been some kid playing a video game. And just like that, all the danger, character interactions and general interest went down the drain. We’ve already got the games; we don’t need to watch someone else playing one!
