Top 10 Anticipated Releases of March 2018
It's time to wrap up winter because spring is almost here! Join http://www.WatchMojo.com as we countdown our picks for the Top 10 Anticipated Releases of March 2018. For this list, we're taking a look at new releases in the realms of movies, music, and video games, as well as premieres of new TV series and new seasons of ongoing shows.
#10: 90th Academy Awards
Release Date: March 4, 2018
From “Get Out,” to “Dunkirk,” to “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” 2017 had too many great films to list here. We all have our predictions regarding what will win Best Picture on Oscar night. Of course we’re just as curious to see how host Jimmy Kimmel will address last year’s infamous mix-up with “La La Land” and “Moonlight.” In addition to that scandal, we’re sure Kimmel’s opening monologue will also cover sexual misconduct in Hollywood, the current political climate, and good old Matt Damon.
#9: “Love” – Season 3
Release Date: March 9, 2018
A lot of shows center on a “will they or won’t they” couple. When it comes to Gillian Jacobs’ Mickey and Paul Rust’s Gus, however, the real question is, “should they?” These two are either a perfect match or a disaster waiting to happen, making for one of the most unique romances of recent years. In regards to the third and final season of “Love,” co-creator Judd Apatow has called it “our sweetest, funniest season”, and that it “ends our story in a beautiful way.”
#8: “Krypton” – Season 1
Release Date: March 21, 2018
Over the course of ten years, “Smallville” explored Clark Kent’s journey towards becoming Superman. This origin story takes audiences back even further, exploring life on Planet Krypton roughly 200 years before Kal-El was even born. The Syfy series will follow the Man of Steel’s grandfather, Seg-El, who seeks to restore the House of El’s good name and save his world before its too late. With a setup ripe with possibilities, let’s see if “Krypton” gives “Supergirl” a run for her money.
#7: “Tomb Raider”
Release Date: March 16, 2018 [U.S.]
The bar for video game movies has been set so low that 2001’s “Tomb Raider” is arguably among the better ones. While by no means a masterpiece, the film did a solid job at capturing the campy spirit of the original games. In the same vein as Crystal Dynamics’ recent “Tomb Raider” titles, this film reboot will take a grittier approach to the franchise. Can Alicia Vikander bring out Lara Croft’s darker, more relatable side, just as Angelina Jolie brought out her cheeky, thrill-seeking side?
#6: “Jessica Jones” – Season 2
Release Date: March 8, 2018
With Disney starting their own streaming service, it’s hard to say what will become of Marvel’s Netflix Cinematic Universe shows. For now, though, at least there’s a second season of “Jessica Jones” on the horizon. While the plot has been kept mostly under wraps, star Krysten Ritter stated, “If season 1 was in [Jessica’s] head and in her mind, then this season will be more in her heart.” In other words, we can expect an “emotional thriller,” as well as a “psychological” one.
#5: “Far Cry 5”
Release Date: March 27, 2018
When it was first announced, “Far Cry 5” immediately drew comparisons to many current events, such as Donald Trump’s presidential victory. In that sense, this could either be the right game at the right time or the wrong game at the wrong time. Politics and controversies aside, this satirical approach may be the breath of fresh air the franchise needs following the good, but not great, reception of “Far Cry 4”, and “Far Cry Primal”. Will Ubisoft ever be able to top “Far Cry 3,” though?
#4: “Atlanta” – Season 2
Release Date: March 1, 2018
On the heels of winning two Primetime Emmys and two Golden Globes, “Atlanta” is finally coming back for a second season, which is being called “Atlanta Robbin’ Season.” The sophomore season’s title references the robberies that tend to occur in the city before Christmastime. While discussing this season’s episodes, creator/star Donald Glover stated, “you enjoy them more when they’re together, but you can also enjoy them in little bits.” So in a strange way, its kind of like “Tiny Toon Adventures: How I Spent My Vacation.”
#3: “A Wrinkle in Time”
Release Date: March 9, 2018 [U.S.]
In 2003, Disney brought Madeleine L'Engle’s award-winning novel to the small screen, receiving a primarily negative response. Fifteen years later, the Mouse House is taking another crack at the source material with acclaimed director Ava DuVernay behind the camera. The film additionally features an all-star cast that includes Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, and Oprah Winfrey, just to name a few. Taking center stage is newcomer Storm Reid as Meg Murry, a young girl looking for her father in an adventure that defies space and time.
#2: “Isle of Dogs”
Release Date: March 23, 2018 [U.S.]
Although Wes Anderson’s trademarks as a director have admittedly become familiar, we can still expect something utterly original with every film he makes. “Isle of Dogs” looks like another wonderfully weird project that could only come from Anderson’s quirky mind. Like “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” this film utilizes stop-motion animation to tell the tale of an Asian boy who sets out to rescue his canine companion from an island of exiled dogs. Think something along the lines of an Akira Kurosawa movie meets a Rankin/Bass Christmas special.
#1: “Ready Player One”
Release Date: March 30, 2018 [U.S.]
Steven Spielberg directs this adaptation of Ernest Cline’s beloved science fiction novel. The story takes place in dystopian future where a virtual reality known as the OASIS provides a much needed escape. Inside this gaming paradise is an Easter Egg that’ll grant its recipient ultimate control. Speaking of Easter Eggs, this film is chockfull of familiar faces, from The Iron Giant, to Chucky, to Gundam… and that’s just a handful of the cameos hidden in the trailer. We’re ready all right!
