Top 10 Best Games of 2019 (So Far)

We’re only halfway through the year, and 2019 has delivered a strong start in gaming! Welcome to WatchMojo, and today, we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Best Games of 2019 (So Far)!

For this list, we’re taking a look at some of the best games to have come out during the first half of 2019! Here’s hoping the next half is just as exciting!

#10: “Slay the Spire” (2019)

Got an affinity for card games and RPGs? You might want to look into “Slay the Spire”, a roguelike turn-based “Card-PG”, if you will. Simply choose one of three heroes and set out to fight various monsters while increasing the size of your deck. During your turn, you’ll have to carefully choose which cards you play, discarding whatever you don’t play. Should you emerge victorious, you’ll get to choose a new card to add to your collection. Couple that with branching paths and strange encounters on your adventure, and you have a game that’s fun to play and tough to master!

#9: “Kingdom Hearts III” (2019)

Fourteen years… It has been fourteen freakin’ years since “Kingdom Hearts II”, and now, we finally have “Kingdom Hearts III”. We’d been longing to explore the vibrant worlds of our favorite Disney & Pixar movies on modern consoles, and we finally got it. “Kingdom Hearts III” not only gave us new and old worlds to explore, but it did so with an extreme amount of detail in textures and design. New keyblades and summons make combat encounters a blast, and more importantly, “Toy Story” is now a part of the “Kingdom Hearts” universe! While some fans still debate if they game lived up to the years of hype, it was still strong enough to be the best selling game of the year, so far anyways.

#8: “Outer Wilds” (2019)

If you’re looking for a fun, sci-fi game with a hint of quirkiness to it, look no further than “Outer Wilds”! The story is simple - you’re an astronaut, camping out in the wilderness… Oh, and the sun is going to blow up in twenty-two minutes. How you spend that time is entirely up to you. You can learn how you ended up on the planet, why the sun is exploding, how to boot up your spaceship so you can get the hell out of there… Yeah, twenty-two minutes isn’t long for a game, but what makes it replayable is in the exploration and discovery of new information. “Outer Wilds” may not be an epic adventure, but it will captivate you with its charming and wondrous universe.

#7: “Cadence of Hyrule” (2019)

Nintendo crosses over with indie title “Crypt of the Necrodancer” in this rhythm adventure! “Cadence of Hyrule” isn’t just a magnificent music game; it’s one of the best crossover games we’ve played! As you explore Hyrule, you’ll have to keep in time with the music until all enemies are defeated. But one of the best features of this crossover is how it blends “Necrodancer’s” rhythm-based mechanics with “Zelda’s” legendary soundtrack. If you’re a fan of “Zelda” or amazing video game music, you best pick up this special gem for your Nintendo Switch!

#6: “Mortal Kombat 11” (2019)

Launching four years after the previous installment, “Mortal Kombat 11” brings some new mechanics and features that keep things fresh. In addition to a reworked meter system, players can customize their favorite MK combatants with different outfits, equip gear with augments for a small boost in damage and rewards, and even swap out different moves to create a new playstyle. While the progression system was a massive grind at launch, NetherRealm Studios has tweaked the game to where you can earn Koins, Souls, and Hearts at a faster rate. So, if that set you off, it might be worth jumping back in!

#5: “Apex Legends” (2019)

Yes, everyone and their mother has a battle royale shooter, but that’s kind of why “Apex Legends” resonated with us when it launched in February 2019. There was a lot riding against it; it didn’t have traditional “Titanfall” mechanics, it was yet another battle royale game, and most of all, it wasn’t “Titanfall 3”. However, the game managed to give online giant “Fortnite” a run for its money thanks to its fast-paced action, unique hero characters, and various methods of traversing the battlefield. “Apex Legends” even included a ping system for players to quickly communicate with each other without mics. When “Fortnite” adopts one of your features, you’re clearly doing something right!

#4: “Devil May Cry V” (2019)

Let’s Rock! This was classic “Devil May Cry” that fans have been waiting after that dismal 2013 reboot! In addition to giving us three playable characters with their own distinct playstyles, the story, visuals, and combat are just as adrenaline-pumping as past titles. While the main story will only take you about ten to fifteen hours, there’s plenty of side missions to extend the ride. There is never a dull moment in “Devil May Cry V”, and any thrillseekers should get a kick out of it!

#3: “Super Mario Maker 2” (2019)

Just to give you a sense of how good this sequel is; it makes “Super Mario Maker” on the Wii U feel like an appetizer in comparison. Once again, Nintendo fans can create their own Mario levels, and they can do so with a variety of new tools. Players can now create slopes, raise water levels, and choose between a greater selection of stage themes. Which in turn translates to incredibly diverse levels created by the Mario Maker community, and it never feels like it gets tiresome. It’s only #3 because it just came out, but if the community supports it well, it could surpass the next two entries by the time the end of the year comes around.

#2: “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” (2019)

When it was announced that Activision would be publishing FromSoftware’s latest game, we had many, many concerns. On the contrary, “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” turned out to be a true From game, and it’s one of the studio’s best! While the story is great and combat is just as intense as “Dark Souls” or “Bloodborne”, the best mechanic in “Sekiro” is the grappling hook, which makes traversing the world immensely satisfying. In as little as ten days, the game managed to sell more than two million copies. So, if you’re craving a tougher challenge, harder than From’s previous titles, “Sekiro” is prepared to kick your teeth in!

Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few Honorable Mentions…

“Baba is You” (2019)

“Tom Clancy’s The Division 2” (2019)

“Ape Out” (2019)

“Tetris 99” (2019)

“A Plague Tale: Innocence” (2019)

“Mordhau” (2019)

#1: “Resident Evil 2” (2019)

If “Resident Evil 7” brought the franchise back from the dead, the “RE2” remake made it look as if the series never left! Not only was it a faithful remake of the PS1 classic, it gave veteran players a new experience with updated visuals, cinematics, and change in camera angle. And the best part? It’s just as terrifying as we remember it! As it approaches its milestone for five million units sold, “Resident Evil 2” shows that horror games are just as big as they used to be: Bringing the best of both modern and retro gaming, and fusing it into something incredible.
