Saying those three little words is hard enough in real life, but in anime, it becomes a whole other level of intense. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Love Confessions in anime.

For this list, we’ll be looking at love confessions that will stay etched in our memories for one reason or another, whether they were sweet, hilarious, or even heartbreaking.

#10: Takeo & Rinko
“My Love Story!!” (2015)

Because of his intimidating appearance, Gouda Takeo has never been popular with girls; so when the adorable Yamato Rinko keeps finding excuses to see him, he assumes that she’s trying to get closer to his friend, Makoto Sunakawa. Seeing as neither of them will take a hint, Sunakawa decides to do what any good pal would do: trick them into confessing to each other. After inviting Rinko into his room, he encourages her to profess her love for Takeo… while the object of her affections is hiding under the bed. While this may be manipulative on Sunakawa’s part, we can’t be mad at him for kickstarting one of the most wholesome romances in anime history.

#9: Senjougahara to Araragi
“Bakemonogatari” (2009-10)

After Koyomi Araragi saves the mysterious Hitagi Senjougahara from the curse of a magical crab god, the two become fast friends. But as Hitagi sees Koyomi’s selflessness and persistent desire to help others, her curiosity towards him quickly turns into something more. Koyomi may be more than a little confused by her ambiguous teasing, but things become clear when she casually and bluntly asks him out. True to herself, this cynical beauty stays as cool as a cucumber while confessing her feelings; but that’s just part of what makes this scene so beautifully genuine. In response, Koyomi makes her promise that they’ll always be honest to each other. Talk about starting off a relationship on the right foot!

#8: Sawako to Shota
“Kimi ni Todoke” (2009-11)

When social outcast and “ghost magnet” Sawako Kuronuma meets popular boy Shota Kazehaya, her life slowly but surely starts to change for the better. As he encourages her to come out of her shell, she becomes infinitely grateful to him for helping her. What she takes a while to realize is that her feelings for him are actually romantic. When she does, her nervousness forces her to confess to him through a halfway closed door. It’s impossible not to get emotional at the sight of Sawako struggling to express the depth of her feelings -- especially since we know that Kazehaya has been head over heels for her from the beginning.

#7: Jun to Yachiyo
“Working!!” (2010-16)

We’ve all heard that saying about love being patient, but Jun Satou seems to have really taken it to heart. The quiet and serious head chef of Wagnaria Restaurant has been secretly in love with his oblivious colleague, Yachiyo Todoroki, ever since they met. When Yachiyo learns that he’s quitting, she gets so upset that she resorts to hiding in a storage closet. Jun takes this chance to properly confess his feelings to her. It’s exciting enough to see him finally come clean after four years of pining; but to make things even better, she happily reciprocates in front of their cheering coworkers.

#6: Otonashi to Kanade
“Angel Beats!” (2010)

We knew that an anime about dead teenagers trying to move on to the afterlife was going to be heartbreaking. But we were still nowhere near ready for this devastating finale. After helping all of their friends overcome their regrets, Otonashi confesses his love to Kanade and asks her to stay with him in limbo. Kanade reciprocates his feelings… before revealing in a gut-wrenching twist that she was the recipient of his heart transplant. She thanks Otonashi for donating his heart, and having fulfilled her last wish, disappears in front of his eyes. Talk about symbolism: he literally gave her his heart, and she broke it -- along with ours.

#5: Rem to Subaru
“Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World” (2016-)

Rem and Subaru may not have exactly started on the right foot; but after Subaru saves her from a magical beast, the demon maid falls hard for him. When a desperate and exhausted Subaru asks Rem to run away with him, we get to see the full depth of her devotion to him. Despite wanting to accept his offer, she refuses because she knows that’s not what he truly wants. Not only does she refuse to let him give up, she delivers a heartfelt speech about all the reasons why she loves him - and reminds him that she will always believe in him. It’s an incredibly romantic moment… until Subaru confesses his love for another girl. Talk about cruel.

#4: Sakuta to Mai
“Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai” (2018)

Public declarations of love tend to be dramatic, and this scene is no exception. Mai Sakurajima suffers from a strange condition that makes her invisible to most people, and causes them to forget her existence. After realizing that he’s the only one who can see her, Sakuta Azusagawa does his best to help her. When he nearly forgets her himself, he panics to the point of literally screaming that he loves her… in front of their entire high school. The confession is so loud and proud that it makes everyone remember Mai, and lifts the curse once and for all. Lesson learned: never underestimate the power of a very, very public romantic gesture.

#3: Hinata to Naruto
“Naruto: Shippuden” (2007-17)

There’s no better time to confess to your longtime crush than when he’s getting his ass kicked by a supervillain - just ask Hinata Hyuuga. As Naruto seems destined to lose against Pain, the soft-spoken Hyuuga heiress shocks everyone by stepping in to defend him. Even though she doesn’t stand a chance against such a powerful enemy, she fights with everything she’s got. When a bewildered Naruto asks her why she’s doing this, she tells him what we’ve known all along - that she’s loved and admired him from afar since they were children. The aftermath of the confession makes it even more poignant as Pain seemingly kills Hinata, which prompts Naruto to go berserk.

#2: Taiga & Ryuuji
“Toradora!” (2008-09)

Taiga Aisaka and Ryuji Takasu promise to set each other up with their respective crushes… but, in the process, they accidentally fall in love. After a long list of trials involving mutual friends and family troubles, the two finally get a minute alone to themselves. Of course, we can’t expect a confession between this explosive duo to go smoothly. While trying to tell Ryuji how much he means to her, Taiga accidentally pushes him off a bridge… before jumping off onto him. Fortunately, they both walk off without a scratch, and even make plans to get married. Guess these two really took “falling for each other” a bit too literally.

#1: Edward to Winry
“Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” (2009-10)

Edward Elric has always been protective of his feisty mechanic, Winry Rockbell. Despite the fact that he often denied having feelings for her, we had a sneaking suspicion that he saw her as more than just a childhood friend. Our doubts are confirmed at the end of the series, when Edward skips the confession altogether and goes straight for the marriage proposal. But, because he’s Ed, he does it in true alchemist fashion - by offering Winry half of his life, in exchange for half of hers. Despite being exasperated by his clumsiness, she replies that she’ll give him all of her life. Who knew the law of equivalent exchange could be so romantic?
