#10: “Gotta Be Somebody”
Dark Horse (2008)

There’s no denying that Nickelback have more than a few tracks aimed towards the topics of love and loss. Playing to the age-old theme of looking for that perfect someone, wherever they might be, we get a nice blend of romantic and hopeful undertones framed within that signature Nickelback soft rock style. It obviously struck a chord with many, since it’s been covered twice already by other artists, and made quite a decent impression on the charts.

#9: “When We Stand Together”
Here and Now (2011)

This acoustic powerhouse of a song managed to resonate with people on a global scale, and is undoubtedly the most successful track off the band’s seventh studio album. Chad Kroeger’s vocals deliver both an empowering message of hope, as well as an emotional plea to unite under a banner of compassion and unity. Nickelback is no stranger to pointing out the various issues that come with our modern society, but with such an uplifting sound surrounding it, the song’s meaning becomes especially poignant.

#8: “Savin’ Me”
All the Right Reasons (2005)

Brimming with themes of salvation and second chances, this song was one of the bands earliest gems, showing that when they went all out with their creativity, they could actually make a damn good power-ballad. Chad Kroeger and Ryan Peake’s vocals manage to capture a sense of desperation bordering on the edge of hopelessness, while acoustic guitars softly serenade listeners, only to have a hard-hitting guitar solo rip out the rug from under them. Did we mention this song has quite the cinematic music video?

 #7: “Someday”
The Long Road (2003)

Ah, nothing like a song that deals with the classic trope of broken relationships and all the heartbreak that comes with it. Playing to their strengths, Kroeger emphasises the pain and regret felt in such a breakup with plenty of far-reaching vocals and rugged guitar riffs to assuage your angst. Yeah, many like to make a joke about this track in particular, but then again it did manage to soar to the top of the Canadian Hot 100 Chart while also breaking into the US and UK’s own top tens. Someday, you just have to admit this song was a hit.

#6: “If Today Was Your Last Day”
Dark Horse (2008)

As it happens, Nickelback are pretty prone to coming up with inspiring tracks with clear messages. Aimed directly at the listener, ”If Today Was Your Last Day” is filled with positive meaning and intention backed up by an ever so catchy acoustic tune, and Chad Kroeger seems pretty determined to act as our life coach all throughout. Though when he comes up with a song like this, we’re inclined to listen to what he has to say, and from the way the rest of the world reacted to the track, so were they.

#5: “Far Away”
All the Right Reasons (2005)

Arguably the only true love song in the band’s repertoire, even in such a cluttered genre Nickelback still manages to lend their style with surprising success. With its pure subject manner, about love uncompromised by distance and other obstacles, Kroeger’s soothing vocals manage to paint a picture ofearnest romance that may just have you suffering from all kinds of feels during the track’s final chorus. We’re wondering just how many times “Far Away” ended up at someone’s wedding.

#4: “Burn it to the Ground”
Dark Horse (2008)

Forget all that crap about love and sadness, grab a beer and get ready to cut loose! One of the band’s hardest tracks, Kroeger and company finally get to let their aggressive side show as they deliver yet another Dark Horse hit – one that managed to earn them a Grammy nod for Best Hard Rock Performance. The premise for the song is pretty simple: getting blindly drunk and going absolutely wild. An arena anthem that will make you want to reach for the nearest glass of booze you can find, this is Nickelback rock at its finest. Who’s up for another drink?

#3: “Rockstar”
All the Right Reasons (2005)

The lyrics were infectious as hell, the subject matter in question was so ridiculous it was downright brilliant, and the music video had all of us laughing our asses off. Taking the perspective of a dejected individual who dreams of a materialistic life as a rock star, we’re greeted to a whole slew of ridiculously cliché scenarios, made all the better when you see members of the public and various celebrities lip-syncing the song in the official video. Yes, you did just see Gene Simmons make an appearance.

#2: “Photograph”
All the Right Reasons (2005)

Built on nothing more than the notion of fond memories, Nickelback once again managed to clean house with this monumental hit. With the nostalgic lyrics meshing together with the band’s classic soft-rock setup, “Photograph” turned out to be a recipe for success, working its way to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and managing to climb high on mainstream rock charts all over the world. Whether it was due to the general public connecting with the sentimental theme, or the melody worming its way into their heads, no one will be forgetting this particular snapshot in rock history any time soon.

Before we reveal our number one pick, here are a few honourable mentions.

“Never Again”
Silver Side Up (2001)

“Lullaby”
Here and Now (2011)

“Never Gonna Be Alone”
Dark Horse (2008)

#1: “How You Remind Me”
Silver Side Up (2001)

You can’t even think of the name Nickelback without this track coming to mind. Considered their signature song, this alternative rock number – weaved around Chad Kroeger’s personal experiences with a dysfunctional relationship – became one of the most popular and defining songs of the early 2000s. Of course, as the most played song of the decade, many jaded listeners would also later consider it one of the most annoying songs ever conceived. Nevertheless, “How You Remind Me” made its way to the top of a whole plethora of charts. Whatever side of the fence you’re on, all can agree its impact on music is as unquestionable as the tune is inescapable.
