#10: “The Ring” (2002)

Top 10 Scary Movies to Watch If You Hate Horror

Based on the original 1998 Japanese horror movie “Ringu,” Gore Verbinksi’s American version features VHS-themed scare tactics, as Naomi Watts’ Rachel Keller pieces together the frightening truth about Cabin 12. Consider yourself warned, cause this movie will throw it all at you, from mass horse suicide to the emergence of Samara. Of course, “The Ring” provides the usual genre visuals, but it will also get under your skin – and surely into your thoughts. For a double-dose of J-Horror remakes, “The Grudge” will seriously mess with your head too, as it features a nonlinear story of fury and despair. Take bets now on who screams first.

#9: “28 Days Later” (2002)

Starring Cillian Murphy, here’s a British flick that brought a special breed of horror back from the dead: ZOMBIES. Just the concept will have you squirming, as a comatose bike messenger named Jim awakens to a London – and possibly a world – that’s been ravaged by the Rage Virus. From there, Danny Boyle’s careful direction and bleak cinematography produce terrifying realism, rendering the audience just as rattled as Jim is by the massive onslaught of zombies. Also, to up the closeness factor, there are a few disturbing subplots that’ll keep any couple holding hands throughout. As one of the more jarring horrors of the early 21st century, “28 Days Later” feels like it could maybe happen to you.

#8: “Friday the 13th” (1980)

Friday The 13th Vs Halloween

You can’t go wrong with a classic retro horror. The plot and visuals of “Friday the 13th” give you all the 1980s aesthetic you could want. Once Jason Voorhees emerges, well, buckle up: the iconic masked figure kills, and he kills a lot. The build-up just oozes tension, most notably through the alarming sound design. The images are obviously disturbing, but the score makes everything worse. So, while “Friday the 13th” may not seem threatening to a couple of couch-bound boos, Jason will keep both you and your significant other biting your nails like a couple of scared kids.

#7: “It Follows” (2014)

There’s nothing funny about venereal diseases. In the indie horror “It Follows,” a one-night stand leads to the spread of a rather vicious supernatural spirit. As a film, the premise itself is a good conversation starter, but the filmmaking brings viewers into the chilling world, as Maika Monroe’s Jay tries to process what the frack is going on. Further creating a sense of dread is the retro-style score of this disasterpiece – as well as the naked old lady walking around. Now that’s frightening. Truly an innovative horror, “It Follows” has a hypnotic feel to it; one that will leave couples looking helpless at each other, worried that “it” may be on the prowl.

#6: “The Shining” (1980)

Top 10 Horror Movies You Can Only Watch Once

As perhaps one of the best horror films ever, this Stanley Kubrick production gives off an utterly chilling atmosphere. All Jack Torrance wants to do is write, but there are a few obstacles in his way. “The Shining” reveals bits and pieces about the lead character and takes the audience through all the nooks and crannies of The Overlook Hotel – not that we want to go looking around. Visually, “The Shining” can easy manipulate the mind. Like, have you seen “Room 237”? And for couples, well, it may inspire a little play by reminding you that too much work can be problematic for any relationship.

#5: “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984)

Top 20 Movies You Shouldn't Watch Alone

For this classic, Freddy Krueger haunts the nightmares of unassuming kids. And his pointy blades only enhance the psychological horror of Wes Craven’s supernatural slasher. Two things can happen during a viewing of “A Nightmare on Elm Street”: either you wrap yourself around your significant other when Freddy emerges, or you get so creeped out by Freddy’s blades that you don’t want to be anywhere near anybody else. You can almost feel him slithering around. It’s a film that may require a bathroom break given all the slashing and screaming, but for couples, it’s best experienced in one sitting – with perhaps a little teasing, too.

#4: “Halloween” (1978)

Also in:

Top 10 Animated Movies to Watch During Halloween

Michael Myers has been through some dark times, but the mask doesn’t exactly help endear him to the general public. Needless to say, “Halloween” doesn’t waste any time with boring exposition, as the real-life boogeyman gets straight to business. Like so many horrors of the era, the creepy visuals and score stand out, but it’s the psychotic ways of the baddie that make this film so unnerving. And hey - director John Carpenter even shoots from Michael’s point of view, so you get all up in his head. It’s an extremely terrifying movie to watch with anyone, and will probably make both of you say “W-T-F” in unison.

#3: “The Cabin in the Woods” (2012)

Also in:

Top 10 Cabin in the Woods Horror Movies

Ok, let’s be honest: some couples don’t want to be scared for a full 90 minutes, and a truly effective horror film could easily ruin the night of someone who scares easy. But a modern classic like Drew Goddard’s “The Cabin in the Woods” takes a different approach with classic genre tropes. Featuring a bunch of college kids that experience a meta manipulation during a cabin retreat, the film will legitimately scare couples while making them question the tropes of all the terrifying movies they’ve ever seen. There’s plenty to think about here, as “The Cabin in the Woods” raises questions about torture porn and why people find pleasure in the genre.

#2: “The Conjuring” (2013)

Top 10 Scariest Moments from The Conjuring Franchise

For couples that truly love scary movies, Ed and Lorraine Warren represent the go-to couple for 21st century horror. “The Conjuring” freaked people out from the get-go with that ominous “based on a true story” in the trailers. Even though its veracity has been contested, this film doesn’t pound away with cheap thrills, as James Wan’s directorial technique and storytelling create an authentic vibe. As a result, the most haunting moments feel genuinely real, which produces the necessary mood to enhance the character dynamic between the two leads. They don’t know what’s going on, and neither will you or your boo. However, the shared experience of being properly terrified brings everybody a little closer. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: - “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) - “The Babadook” (2014) - “The Exorcist” (1973)

#1: “Scream” (1996)

Top 10 Dumbest Decisions in The Scream Movies

Here’s a scary movie that changed mainstream horror. In the world of “Scream,” no character is safe. The now iconic opening sequence will probably have you screaming at poor Casey Becker as you try desperately to offer her advice through the screen. It’ll also probably have you thinking twice the next time you feel like popcorn… Directed by the one and only Wes Craven, “Scream” pays homage to the past while using comedy to address the questionable actions of its characters. In other words, couples can expect a meta horror experience with “Scream,” and the modern flavor makes each scene just a little more entertaining when the characters make the same stupid mistakes. Hold each other close for this one. Do you agree with our list? What is your favorite scary movie to watch with your significant other?
