Top 10 Best Super Bowl Commercials of 2022

Top 10 Best Super Bowl Commercials of 2022
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Nick Spake
For non-football fans, these commercials were the real Super Bowl. For this list, we'll be looking at the best commercials that aired during Super Bowl LVI. Our countdown includes General Motors, Amazon, Bud Light Seltzer Hard Soda, and more!

#10: Mind Reader

Amazon Admit it, we’ve all wondered at one point if Alexa is reading our minds. We mean, just the other day we were thinking that Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost should do a Super Bowl commercial. And then, boom! We get this gem! No matter how much you love your significant other, there’s a reason why we all keep certain things to ourselves. With Alexa serving as a third wheel, everything is out in the open for this celebrity couple. Be it bad breath, dull conversations, or straight-up lies, Alexa has a way of ruining the moment. While this clever commercial asserts that Alexa can’t read minds, we’re still not entirely convinced. And yes, we see the irony in Johansson being annoyed with a virtual assistant.

#9: Land of Loud Flavors

Bud Light Seltzer Hard Soda Guy Fieri has been talking about Flavortown for years, but we always assumed that it was a figurative place. It turns out that there is a Land of Loud Flavors. All you need to get there is a bottle of Bud Light Seltzer and a Narnia-esque fridge. The world that this commercial imagines is a perfect blend of diners, dives, and high fantasy. You’ll want a pause button to catch all the details that make up this city of food. There are even echoes of “Alice in Wonderland” as the characters follow the king’s beach-blonde servants, rather than a white rabbit. We also get “Wizard of Oz” vibes with Fieri as the great and flavorful ruler. In the end, though, there’s no place like home.

#8: Dream House with Anna Kendrick & Barbie

Rocket Homes & Rocket Mortgage The best commercials are often the ones that catch you off guard. As Anna Kendrick pops up by a doll’s dream house, this ad appears to be for Barbie’s latest product. While this might draw in the kids in the room, the commercial ends up being more advanced than expected. Barbie’s shot at owning her dream house is jeopardized as Better Offer Betty, Cash Offer Carl, and other dolls try to snatch it up. Wait, is House Flipper Skipper the same Skipper as Barbie’s sister? In any case, Barbie prevails thanks to Rocket Mortgage while the others are left to bid over Castle Grayskull. It’s the Mattel crossover we never knew we wanted, proving that playtime and economics can go hand in hand.

#7: Push It

Flamin’ Hot Many unexpected things can happen when you introduce an outside source to the environment. For example, if you drop some Flamin’ Hot Doritos and Cheetos in the wild, the animals might be united in perfect harmony. And by harmony, we don’t just mean peace and love. We mean that foxes will beatbox, birds will rap, and Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It!” will be heard throughout the jungle. In case you were wondering, the bird isn’t voiced by Salt or Pepa, but the producers landed another superstar: Megan Thee Stallion. The Fox, meanwhile, is voiced by viral sensation Charlie Puth. Throw in some adorably rendered animals, and you’ve got a commercial that’s equally hot, cool, and vicious. We’re just surprised that no cheetahs showed up for the Cheetos.

#6: Goodbye Cable

Verizon 5G Internet Jim Carrey has been revisiting a lot of his classic characters lately. To hold us over until the next “Ace Ventura,” Carrey brings back Ernie “Chip” Douglas, aka the Cable Guy, for this Verizon ad. Although once viewed as the black sheep in Carrey’s filmography, the 1996 comedy has become a cult classic in recent years. That’s not the only reason why Chip is well-suited for this nostalgic commercial. More and more people are cutting cable. With the arrival of Verizon’s 5G Network, the Cable Guy is rendered obsolete. Even Chip has trouble finding fault with 5G, but that doesn’t mean the characters will be getting rid of him anytime soon. By the way, the movie playing in the background is a nice touch.

#5: “Golden Memories”

Lay’s Following a seventeen-year hiatus from the Super Bowl, Lay’s needed to go big for their comeback commercial. Having Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen lend their natural comedic chemistry was a great start, but this ad doesn’t solely rely on the celebrity talent. It’s ingeniously written too, as Rudd and Rogen reminisce about all the good times they’ve had together. There have also been some not-so-good times, such as getting kidnapped, getting mixed up in a turf war, and moving into a house that happens to be haunted. Through the good times, bad times, and golden times, though, Lay’s has always been there for the guys. Lay’s will continue to be there for Rogen as he starts a new chapter with his ghost bride.

#4: Zeus & Hera

BMW USA A Greek god walks into a coffee shop… oh, that’s not the setup for a joke. It’s the teaser for a BMW commercial. We’re surprised that it took Arnold Schwarzenegger this long to play Zeus. While his accent is more Austrian than Greek, Arnie is otherwise tailormade to play Mount Olympus’ king. Salma Hayek is every bit as godly as Hera, although the power couple have grown tired of Mount Olympus. They retire to California, which we could totally see Zeus governing someday. Even in retirement, Zeus feels drained, but an electric vehicle zaps him back into action. An ad this funny and creative is sure to boost car sales, although what we really want to know is where we can buy a baby pegasus.

#3: Dr. EV-il

General Motors Last year, Mike Myers and Dana Carvey brought back Wayne and Garth for an Uber Eats ad. This year, Myers revisits his most diabolical character for the big game. Dr. Evil reunites with Rob Lowe as Number 2, Mindy Sterling as Frau, and Seth Green as Scott. Although “Goldmember” seemingly saw him turn over a new leaf, the doctor is back to his evil ways. He’s also moved his headquarters from Starbucks to GM. To take over the world, Dr. Evil is motivated to save it by preventing climate change. What better way to do so than by going electric? While the commercial is full of memorable callbacks, it introduces some fresh blood in Baby Me. “Austin Powers” fans are sure to be laughing maniacally.

#2: New Generation

Chevy Silverado It’s been fifteen years since “The Sopranos” left us with an ambiguous ending, although many believed that Tony got whacked. If this Chevrolet commercial is any indication, Tony is gone, but his children are carrying on the Soprano name. Set to the theme song “Woke Up This Morning,” the ad faithfully recreates the HBO crime drama’s opening. Instead of Tony in Suburban, though, daughter Meadow is behind the wheel of a Silverado EV with Jamie-Lynn Sigler reprising her role. Meadow not only drives like a boss, but she’s finally got her parking down. Reuniting with brother AJ, played by an all-grown up Robert Iler, this atmospheric ad is honestly good enough to be a teaser for a sequel series. Make it happen HBO! Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. Welcome to Superior Bowl, Michelob ULTRA Peyton Manning, Serena Williams, & The Big Buscemi, Among Others Musical Commercials, T-Mobile Miley & Dolly + Turk & J.D. = Musical Heaven What’s Gotten into Lindsay?, Planet Fitness Is 2022 Lohan’s Comeback Year? Old Friends. New Fun., Meta Quest 2 And Just Like That, Animatronics Went From Kind of Creepy to Tear-Jerking Bouncing QR Code, Coinbase Admit It, You Totally Whipped Out Your Phone to See Where This QR Code Took You

FTX There have always been naysayers who turn their nose up at game-changing ideas, be it the wheel, the fork, or the toilet. Who better to represent all of these doubters than Larry David? This ad plays out like “History of the World, Part I” meets “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” If we listened to Larry, everyone would be reading by candlelight, nobody would’ve walked on the Moon, and the Walkman wouldn’t have paved the way for the iPod. So, when Larry hears about the FTX app, it’s a no-brainer… for the audience. For Larry, it’s another in a long line of missed opportunities. All that’s missing from this pretty, pretty good commercial is the closing “Curb” music. We’ll gladly settle for Larry arguing with Benjamin Franklin, however.
