Some levels are creative, and others are just downright crazy. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Bizarre Video Game Levels. Just so there’s no confusion, we’re excluding games where the entire premise is bizarre as you can find those games on our Top 10 Weirdest Video Game List. Also our standard rule applies: one entry per franchise.

#10: Band Land “Rayman” (1995)

To start off our list, we have this music-themed world. Consisting of multiple levels, including Bongo Hills and Allegro Presto, everything in Band Land is made of music. Giant instruments stand in the landscape behind, and others are strewn across the level itself. Living bongos, maracas and cymbals serve as platforms for the limbless hero. And though the setting may seem friendly, Band Land also has its fair share of baddies to fit the theme.

#9: Chaos Vortex “Kid Icarus: Uprising” (2012)

Well this place really does live up to its name. In this stage late in the game Pit has to track down the Chaos Kin whom has fled to this twisted reality where everything can suddenly go black or negative colors, weird looking shadows will try to grab you, and enemies will be aware of the game’s camera and get up close to it, blocking your view. Of course when you do find the Chaos Kin get ready to rip through this dimension at high speeds, resulting in even more unexpected changes.

#8: Distortion World “Pokemon Platinum” (2009)

This world is said to be an alternate dimension created by the legendary Pokemon, Giratina, as a balance for the real world. Here, the laws of physics don’t matter and time doesn’t flow. The land is broken up into tiny floating islands which can be walked on in any direction. Like a dark M.C. Escher creation, this sort of spooky place seems like the perfect home for a ghost dragon. Thankfully the lake guardian Pokemon Mesprit, Azelf and Uxie are here to help guide you through this gravity defying world.

#7: Bad News “DmC: Devil May Cry” (2013)

Raptor News is not the kind you’d want to listen to. They’re corrupt, biased, and as it turns out, run by demons. They’re only made more twisted in Limbo. Part of the level has Dante moving through the broadcast’s animations, with the show’s logo spinning in the background. After breaking through to the core of Raptor, he then faces off against the giant floating head of lead anchor, Bill O’ Ri … I mean Bob Barbas, as he spits taunts and insults. Though, he ultimately ends up succumbing to a well placed shot in the chest.

#6: Charlie MacDonald “No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle” (2010)

The No More Heroes games are built upon it’s unique and clever boss fights. Charlie MacDonald is certainly no exception, though does have one thing that sets him apart from his assassin brethren: cheerleaders. No, seriously, ranked assassin cheerleaders. So how do you take on a Football Player with a legion of Cheerleaders in a Stadium? Why with a giant mech battle of course. Travis’s motorcycle conveniently acts as the controls for a mech of his own, so the two may do battle across Santa Destroy. Let’s just say things don’t end well for Mr. Football.

#5: Inside the Moon “The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask” (2000)

Also in:

Top 10 Inside Jokes in Video Games

As what is typically considered the darkest Zelda game, Majora’s Mask’s Termina is home to a lot strange and spooky locations, but the strangest of them all is inside the moon itself. The world inside this looming ball of potential world destruction … houses a grassy meadow with a lone tree. At this tree sits Majora in the form of a child, perhaps the creepiest and most unsettling Zelda villain of all.. Though this area appears serene enough, it has an undeniably haunting atmosphere with the creepy children running around. No, creepy moon child, I don’t want to give you my masks. Get out of my nightmares.

#4: Steamy Bathhouse “Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4” (2008)

In a game that also features a dungeon modeled after a strip club, it must take something truly strange to stand out. This level, formed by the rebellious Kanji’s struggle with his sexual identity, most certainly stands out. Sporting a distinctly homoerotic atmosphere, the gang’s trek through the hazy hallways is filled with many manly enemies. There are Hulk Hogan-esque wrestlers, police officers, and a boss wielding two giant male gender symbols.

#3: Villi People “Earthworm Jim 2” (1995)

Disguised as a blind cave salamander for some reason, Jim must float through a cavernous path littered with enemies, wall tendrils and... pinball bumpers? This is accompanied by the first movement of Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata”, especially strange when paired with Jim’s constant outbursts of “groovy!”. When Jim reaches the end of the cave, he is immediately thrown into a trivia-style game show, and after that he must perform a Simon-like repeat the sequence minigame. Who thinks this shit up?

#2: The Tea Party “Batman: Arkham City” (2011)

Top 20 Most Difficult Video Game Levels of All Time

Let’s take a second to let this sink in. (Show Batman with a creepy bunny mask) Batman has dozens of memorable villains, but the title for doing the most bizarre thing to Batman in a video game goes to the Mad Hatter. He drugs and kidnaps Batman after luring him with a supposed cure to the disease he contracted earlier from the Joker. Batman’s hallucinations lead to him facing a mob of bunny-masked thugs on top of a giant stopwatch, plummeting endlessly into an abyss. The illusion is broken only after taking the Hatter out. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

#1: The Milkman Conspiracy “Psychonauts” (2005)

Also in:

Top 10 Unfinished Video Game Levels We Never Got

Tim Schafer’s psychic adventure takes Raz through some truly twisted minds, the Meat Circus comes to mind, but the most twisted is easily Boyd Cooper’s Brain. His mind resembles a fairly normal suburban neighborhood, except for how the streets are warped and infested with G-Men searching for the supposedly dead Milkman. This level mostly takes a break from combat, employing a more adventurous feel with several disguises needed to fool the G-Men into letting Raz in restricted areas. With the perfect mix of strange and charming elements, it’s not hard to see why this is our top pick. Do you agree with our list? What levels do you think are too strange to pass up?
