Breaking up is hard to do! Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Breakup Scenes in Teen Movies. For this list, we’ll be looking at all the most memorable breakups from our favorite movies involving teens. We’ll definitely never forget the breakup from “The Notebook,” but since it wasn’t a teen movie per se, it won’t make our list. Also, a spoiler alert, as well as a sobbing alert, is in order.

#10: Edward Cullen & Bella Swan “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” (2009)

Top 10 Reasons Edward Cullen is the WORST

In the “Twilight” franchise, Bella and Edward’s relationship is certainly a tumultuous one. But for the most part, their love is put up against external forces that threaten to tear them apart. In the second movie, “New Moon,” however, Bella is stunned when Edward tells her that he and his family are leaving town - and that he doesn’t want her to come with them. The audience can probably guess that he doesn’t really mean it and that he’s just trying to keep her safe, but it’s a heart-wrenching scene to watch nonetheless.

#9: Emma & Adèle “Blue Is the Warmest Colour” (2013)

How Emma Stone Prepared to Play Bella Baxter in Poor Things

One of the most beautiful (and underrated!) love stories released in recent years has to be 2013’s “Blue Is the Warmest Colour.” The French film tells the story of Adèle and Emma, two young women who find themselves in a passionate romance. After Emma finds out that Adèle has slept with one of her coworkers, though, she flies into a rage and kicks Adèle out. The acting in this scene is exceptional and makes it feel almost too real. Anyone could relate to the feelings that both of the characters are experiencing in this moment.

#8: Laney Boggs & Zack Siler “She's All That” (1999)

At the beginning of “She’s All That,” Zack’s girlfriend Taylor leaves him for a reality TV show participant. This kicks off the action of the movie, leading to him to bet that he can make any girl prom queen. He ends up forming a relationship with the girl he picks, Laney. But when she finds out about the arrangement, she publicly calls him out and demands to know the truth. Despite the fact that he’s actually developed feelings for her, she makes it clear that it’s obviously too late.

#7: Sam & Craig “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” (2012)

Top 20 Saddest Scenes in Teen Movies

As far as teen movies go, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” has to be one of the most emotionally evocative. It manages to encompass all the difficulties that come from the experience of being an adolescent in a beautiful and touching way. In one scene, Sam decides to break up with her boyfriend, Craig, after realizing that he has been cheating on her. While the audience may think that this means she’ll be with Charlie, it’s unfortunately not that simple, despite the fact that she is the object of his affections.

#6: Troy Bolton & Gabriella Montez “High School Musical 2” (2007)

Also in:

Top 10 Troy Bolton Moments

There are a lot of breakups on our list today, but this is the only one that happens in song! Troy and Gabriella are the fan favorite couple from the “High School Musical” franchise, but they spend time apart in the second movie after Gabriella leaves Lava Springs to “go [her] own way.” He begs her to change her mind and stay, but she reiterates that they have issues with trust and gives him back the legendary “T as in Troy” necklace. Fans may have known that there was no way this breakup would stick, although it was still hard to watch.

#5: Lara Jean Song-Covey & Peter Kavinsky “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You” (2020)

The first “To All the Boys” was a perfect teen rom-com, giving viewers the lighthearted guilty pleasure they needed. In the sequel, “P.S. I Still Love You,” it was inevitable that Peter and Lara Jean were going to have to face some conflict, but it was way worse than people were expecting. Peter’s ex, Gen, had been a thorn in the side of their relationship since the very beginning. After Lara Jean found out that Peter had been comforting her, and that he had lied about knowing that Gen had released the hot tub video of them, she ended things.

#4: Torrance Shipman & Aaron “Bring It On” (2000)

Torrance’s relationship with her older boyfriend Aaron isn’t exactly the most important plot point of “Bring It On,” but when she finally ends it, we were all cheering for her. The viewers could tell that Aaron was not a good guy from the snippets we saw of him throughout the film. As soon as he told Torrance he didn’t think she was captain material, we were fully over him. When Torrance goes to Aaron’s dorm to confront him, she doesn’t ask for a kiss goodbye, but she does tell him to kiss something else. Finally!

#3: Sebastian Valmont & Annette Hargrove “Cruel Intentions” (1999)

“Cruel Intentions” is definitely one of the most dramatic teen movies to be released in the ‘90s, filled with manipulation, lying, and sexual escapades. Sebastian makes a bet with his stepsister that he can win over and sleep with the virginal Annette, but when he gets to know her, he finds himself actually falling for her. In the end, though, he pretends to not care for her and says that he was doing it all because she was a conquest. She doesn’t believe him, but breaks up with him anyway, in an emotionally wrenching scene.

#2: Elio Perlman & Oliver “Call Me by Your Name” (2017)

This may not be a traditional breakup, but it is a goodbye. From the beginning, it seems sure that Oliver and Elio’s relationship can’t have a happy ending, considering their age difference, as well as the fact that they’re facing prejudice in an era when being gay wasn’t nearly as widely accepted. They say their goodbye at a train station and heartbreakingly can’t even share a final kiss because of their circumstance. When Elio calls his mom to pick him up and his voice breaks, it’s almost too much to bear. Not to mention how awful it is when Elio later finds out Oliver is engaged to someone else. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. Anna Gardner & Jacob Helm “Like Crazy” (2011) Heather Gardner & Chris ‘Oz’ Ostreicher “American Pie” (1999) Sandy Olsson & Danny Zuko “Grease” (1978) Mr. Griffith & Mrs. Griffith “Easy A” (2010) Veronica ‘Ronnie’ L. Miller & Will Blakelee “The Last Song” (2010)

#1: Katarina ‘Kat’ Stratford & Patrick Verona “10 Things I Hate About You” (1999)

Just like so many other teen movies, there’s a clandestine arrangement at the center of the plot of “10 Things I Hate About You.” And if Patrick had ever seen another rom-com, he would know that Kat was inevitably going to find out about it and leave him. The climactic scene takes place at the prom where Kat confronts Patrick about what he’s done and questions his motivations for being with her. Of course, any fan of the movie knows that they reconcile after Kat professes her love for him using a poem in class.
