Top 10 Characters We Want in Super Smash Bros.
Well, now that you mention it, we can! Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Characters Want to play as in Super Smash Bros.
For this list, we’re only choosing characters that have either had a prominent appearance on a Nintendo Console, or at the very least have originated in videogames, thus excluding characters like Batman or Goku.
#10: Miles “Tails” Prower
“Sonic the Hedgehog” series (1992-)
With the addition of Sonic in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it only makes sense that his best pal should come along for the ride. A much different personality from the blue blur, Tails uses his head and engineering skills to get the job done. With the ability to fly – or at least hover for short periods of time – knocking this intrepid fox off the platform might prove difficult. Plus, he could always use his Mech as his final Smash.
#9: Professor Hershel Layton
“Professor Layton” series (2008-)
While this genius has a well known fervor for solving puzzles, Professor Layton has proven himself pretty handy with a sword. Knowing full well that a studied approach is better than a hasty one, the Professor would thrive in using his opponent’s force against them. Counters and projectile reflections would be his bread and butter. Throw in an array of swift sword strikes, and Layton could be a blast for anyone to play and highly prized among the Smash elite. Every brawl has an answer.
#8: Captain Toad & Toadette
“Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker” (2014)
Next are these pint-sized treasure hunters, working as palette swaps of each other. In their home title, they spend most of their time running around, flipping levers and switches to collect all the valuable coins and gems they can, with the odd turnip thrown in self-defense. What they lack in strength can be made up for with creativity. We’ve seen the Ice-climbers work as a duo, so this seems like the perfect fit.
#7: Paper Mario
“Paper Mario” series (2001-)
Mario’s adorable 2D form from the spinoff RPG franchise has no shortage of abilities. For instance, he can transform into a plane or boat, or roll up into a tube. He has over a dozen combat-ready friends, and an entire sticker book full of deadly attacks. A great way to further expand his versatility would be the ability to set one of a few select partners to aid in combat, modifying his attack properties similar to Shulk’s Monado modes. There is no shortage of possibilities when it comes to this paper-thin plumber.
#6: Simon Belmont
“Castlevania” series (1986-)
This whip-cracking vampire hunter from the very first Castlevania carries the weight of a franchise and an incredibly extensive clan on his shoulders. Armed with the now iconic “Vampire Killer”, Simon Belmont has left myriad evil creatures in his wake. His whip offers a lot of range for a melee-based fighter, and to avoid monotony he’s also got the classic spread of Castlevania subweapons. Konami didn’t mind having Solid Snake make his way over to the franchise, so why not Simon?
#5: K. Rool
“Donkey Kong Country” series (1994-)
As the big baddie of one of the most beloved platforming franchises of all time, King K. Rool has been overlooked for far too long. Suitable for a heavy fighter class like Bowser, the King has donned a few aliases over the years. Besides his usual, regal self, he’s been a pirate and a mad scientist – cuz the only thing better than new characters, is new character with multiple costumes.
#4: Ryu
“Street Fighter” series (1987-)
It makes sense that one of the most iconic fighting game characters would join a roster full of equally iconic combatants. In Street Fighter, Ryu is the perfect beginner fighter. As the baseline character, he has balanced speed and power and intuitive specials. But don’t let that newbie-friendliness fool you. In capable hands, he can be just as powerful as anyone on the roster, fighting at range with fireballs or closing distances with a hurricane kick. Plus, seeing as Super Street Fight IV was a launch title for the 3DS, we’re sure Capcom and Nintendo have a pretty solid relationship.
#3: Geno
“Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars” (1996)
Most people probably wouldn’t think much of a wooden puppet when it comes to fighting. I mean, PInocchio was preeetty wimpy. But not Geno. In Super Mario RPG, he is actually a warrior sent from Star Road to retrieve the shattered pieces of the Star Rod, and joins Mario and company on their quest to defeat Smithy. Geno’s small stature and high power and speed would make him an easy favorite. To balance out, he would have to be easily launched and tricky to control – cause we don’t need another Meta Knight situation.
#2: Bayonetta
“Bayonetta” series (2010-)
She’s provocative. She’s deadly. She’s Bayonetta. With the recent partnering of Nintendo and Platinum Games to bring Bayonetta 2 exclusively to Wii U, everyone’s favorite hair-woven-jumpsuit-clad umbra witch would be a perfect addition to Smash. Her sexuality may have to be toned down a bit to keep that E For Everyone Rating intact, but she’d still be just as lethal. With an array of weapons, for both her hands and feet, Bayonetta comes with dizzying combo potential. Also, remember what we said about alternate costumes?
Before we reveal our top pick, here are some honorable mentions:
Tetra
“The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker” (2003)
Palicoes
“Monster Hunter 4” (2015)
Ghirahim
“The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword” (2011)
Ridley
“Metroid” series (1987-)
#1: Bomberman
“Bomberman” series (1983-)
While he may not seem like much at first, looking back at Bomberman’s games, there’s a lot to draw from. From basic Bomberman to the single-player adventures, he’s had basic bombs, throwable bombs, remote detonated bombs, pumpable bombs a la Samus’s charge shot, various elemental bombs, really just a lot of bombs. This classic gaming icon is too good to pass up for the Smash roster, and with the potential for so many explosions, how could Bomberman not be number one? Hey, we made it through that whole entry without making a single bomb pun.
