#10: “Legally Blonde” (2001)
By no means a stereotypical chick flick storyline, we begin with a movie that breaks a few rules within the genre, but one that we judge to be an excellent example anyway! Reese Witherspoon stars as Elle Woods, a sorority girl out to prove she’s more than just a pretty face! Belittled by an ex-boyfriend, this lady’s taking the law into her own hands - quite literally! Applying for, getting accepted by, and enrolling at Harvard University, Elle’s heading for greatness, and she’slooking great as she does so!
#9: “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997)
If there is a queen of chick flicks, then it’s Julia Roberts! And “My Best Friend’s Wedding” is one of the actress’ best efforts! As she and ‘best friend’ Dermot Mulroney age ever closer to 28 years old, both are starting to believe that a past pledge to marry one another should they remain single, could come true! That is until Cameron Diaz shows up and spoils it all! It’s about realizing you love someone just a little too late; it’s about weddings and in what way to suitably wreck them!
#8: “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993)
Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks combine here for roles as star-crossed lovers, who never look likely to cross one another’s path at all! Hanks is Sam, a widow unable to stop grieving for his wife. Ryan is Annie, a woman in a relationship that’s missing a certain something! Framing itself, and borrowing plotlines from, the 1957 chick flick favorite “An Affair To Remember”, what follows is a story stretching all across America! Hanks is Cary Grant, Ryan is Deborah Kerr - this movie is a classic in its own right!
#7: “Dirty Dancing” (1987)
A lot of us may have had holiday romances, but few of us can recall vacation relations quite as intense as this! Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze are here caught up in one of the most well-choreographed love stories in cinema! With so many quotable lines and copyable dance moves, even if you haven’t seen “Dirty Dancing” you know at least a little bit about it! ‘Nobody puts Baby in a corner’, but everybody tries at least once to nail that lift... Tried, probably failed, possibly broken some bones!
#6: “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006)
If there’s one thing chicks appreciate in their flicks, it’s fashion! And rarely is the fashion as full-on as it is for “The Devil Wears Prada”! Adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name, this film certainly puts the ‘cat’ in ‘catwalk’! Meryl Streep plays high maintenance to the max, Emily Blunt is as brilliant as her character is trying too hard, and Anne Hathaway plays the willing runner really well! A seriously stylish movie, this is a film that sets trends in more ways than one!
#5: “Pretty Woman” (1990)
A staple component to any well-rounded DVD collection, for many, “Pretty Woman” was the pioneer for the modern-day chick flick! Starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, it tells the story of Vivian Ward, a prostitute who happens to come across an especially affluent client! Edward Lewis is frugal with his finances but he isn’t lucky in love... That is until he meets Vivian! You’d never put the two together, but you’d certainly never break them apart! It’s a modern world romance, it’s a soundtrack to sing-along to, it’s a genre-defining film!
#4: “Love Actually” (2003)
Richard Curtis is quite the rom-com writer, but “Love Actually” has to be his finest hour! A movie that meshes together the romantic affairs of ten individuals, love is very much in the air with this one! Unfolding amid the countdown to Christmas, this is a film that leaves us with a very good feeling inside! With an all-star cast including chick flick champion Hugh Grant and A-listers like Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson and Keira Knightley, “Love Actually” is most definitely worth watching!
#3: “When Harry Met Sally…” (1989)
Boy/girl relationships can be a tricky business, and for no two people is that more true than for Harry Burns and Sally Albright. It’s an age-old question, and it’s one that this movie puts under the microscope - can a man and a woman ever be friends, without the ‘s’ word getting in the way? Sex is a great thing, but Harry and Sally are worried it could be the worst thing for their friendship! This movie’s an intimate look at getting intimate, and at the idea of ‘love’ in general!
#2: “Bridget Jones’s Diary” (2001)
If the romance is real, then we tend to like it even more... And Bridget Jones’ love-life is laughably authentic! Played by Renee Zellweger, Jones is an average 32 year old woman... She smokes too much, sometimes wears unattractive underwear, and she just cannot seem to find that holiest of things, a perfect man! Resolved to write everything she thinks, feels and does in a diary, her daily entries are our entertainment! The best thing about Bridget is that we believe in her... In fact, often, we feel we could be her!
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:
- “Notting Hill” (1999)
- “P.S. I Love You” (2007)
- “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” (2005)
- “Never Been Kissed” (1999)
- “A Walk To Remember” (2002)
#1: “The Notebook” (2004)
True love put on hold usually has us hooked - just try to watch “The Vow” or “Dear John” with dry eyes(!) - but emotional strain doesn’t come any more intense than today’s winner! In “The Notebook”, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling play out a love story that spans an entire lifetime... It’s a movie that messes with your mood from start to finish! One second you’re delighted, the next you’re devastated! It’s a standout film of the 21st century, it’s wonderfully weepy and a first class chick flick!
