These just keep getting better and better. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top ten Call of Duty zombies maps.
For this list, we’ll be looking at our favourite zombies maps from the “Call of Duty” franchise. We’ll be basing our picks on fan popularity, the map’s functionality, and its originality.
#10: Shangri-La
“Call of Duty: Black Ops” (2010)
Shangri-La was included in the Annihilation pack, and it has remained a fan favourite ever since. Not only is it gorgeous to look at and explore; it includes a ton of new features which fans instantly adored. New utilities like a water slide and mine cart made traversing the map exciting, and new speciality zombies like the Napalm and Shrieker always kept you on your toes. On top of that, a new wonder weapon, the 31-79 JGb215 gave you the ability to shrink zombies and run them over like a giant. While it may look like it, Shangri-La this was not.
#9: Buried
“Call of Duty: Black Ops II” (2012)
Buried is perhaps the scariest zombies map, and easily one of the most difficult. It takes place in a buried Western town (hence the name), and features tons of interesting enemies and NPCs. There’s the pain-in-the-ass ghost woman who haunts the mansion, and Arthur, the giant who helps you if you give him candy or booze. There’s also new weapons and buildables aplenty, like the Subsurface Resonator and the Time Bomb, which allows players to travel back in time when it’s thrown. It’s one of the smaller maps, but it’s easily one of the most fun.
#8: Moon
“Call of Duty: Black Ops” (2010)
Serving as one of the largest zombies maps, Moon is notable for bringing a ton of new features to the series, as well as taking place on the freaking moon! How can you not love that? You’re able to teleport between Area 51 and the moon, and being on it feels completely fresh and original, complete with low-gravity environments, areas without oxygen, and the new astronaut zombie which teleports you away and steals your perks. It also hosts perhaps the best Easter egg of the entire series, which sees Earth being completely obliterated by moon rockets. Moon is totally badass and out of this world.
#7: Nacht der Untoten
“Call of Duty: World at War” (2008)
Nacht der Untoten, which is German for Night of the Undead, was the map that started it all, and while it is relatively barebones and simplistic today, it was a tense and rewarding experience which left fans clamouring for more zombies action. There are only three accessible rooms, which helps to ratchet up the anxiety and atmosphere, and it featured many firsts for the series, like wonder weapons, utilities, and power ups. It may seem simplistic today, but it was revolutionary for the time.
#6: Kino der Toten
“Call of Duty: Black Ops” (2010)
Kino der Toten served as the first zombies map in “Black Ops,” and what an introduction it was. This map has been criticized in the past for being too easy, but perhaps that’s what makes it so much fun: while maps like Nacht der Untoten keep you on your toes via tension and atmosphere, Kino der Toten simply lets you be a zombie killing God by blasting them through the air with your Thunder Gun.
#5: Call of the Dead
“Call of Duty: Black Ops” (2010)
Call of the Dead is certainly an all-time zombies classic, and it’s due to one reason: celebrities. This map was the first to feature playable celebrities, which include “Buffy’s” Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, villain staple Danny Trejo, and Michael Rooker of “The Walking Dead” fame. It also features George A. Romero as a potentially aggressive zombie, which is just awesome. When coupled with the scary electrified zombies and unique setting, Call of the Dead is an absolute banger of a map.
#4: Ascension
“Call of Duty: Black Ops” (2010)
The map’s name is certainly telling: it ascended the zombies minigame to something else entirely and helped to solidify its own unique character. Ascension included many firsts, including space monkeys, which are adorable little monkeys in space suits, Easter egg quests (which quickly became a zombies staple), two new wonder weapons, and two perks, the PhD Flopper and Stamin-Up. It also developed the zombies storyline, if you care about that sort of thing. Ascension tried a lot of new things, and it nailed every one of them.
#3: Mob of the Dead
“Call of Duty: Black Ops II” (2012)
Mob of the Dead is certainly unique: it takes place on the very real Alcatraz Island during Prohibition-era America and features a group of gangsters attempting to escape the prison during a zombie outbreak. The confining nature of the environment leads to many intense moments and gunfights, but the map is also a ton of fun as well. It features a terrific jump scare Easter egg, a boss-like zombie, an extremely badass acid-shooting gun, and the new afterlife feature, which allows you to travel through walls. It all connects to create a terrifically original and exceptional zombies experience.
#2: Origins
“Call of Duty: Black Ops II” (2012)
Origins is COD zombies at its absolute finest and most epic. It’s a large and detailed map, complete with countless interesting Easter eggs and many awesome story moments. The gameplay was also extremely fun and shook things up nicely: new zombies like armored Panzer Soldat kept you terrified, and the three Giant Robots which wander the map provide a unique challenge. There were also the amazing Elemental Staffs and new power ups, like Zombie Blood, which prevents zombies from attacking you for a brief time. Treyarch went all out for this map, and their effort is definitely appreciated.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
Shi No Numa
“Call of Duty: World at War” (2008)
Der Eisendrache
“Call of Duty: Black Ops III” (2015)
#1: Der Riese
“Call of Duty: World at War” (2008)
After Nacht der Untoten, Treyarch began to evolve the zombies minigame in unbelievable ways, and Der Riese was not only the perfect combination of everything which came before, but it set the bar for future zombie releases. This map was the debut for many elements which are now zombies staples, including teleporters and the Pack-a-Punch machine. On top of that, the zombie AI was greatly improved, which made the map both a fantastic starting point for beginners and a challenge for veteran zombie fans. While more complex maps have come and gone, Der Riese is the one which finally perfected the zombies formula and paved the way for a successful future.
