#10: Paraphilic Infantilism
Commonly known as adult baby syndrome and diaper lovers, paraphilic infantilism is the regression of an adult to an infant state during role-playing. This particular activity stands out among fetishes as it is not always sexual since babies don’t have sex. And no, adult babies are not hot for children. Instead, participants opt to wear or even use diapers, drink from bottles, suck on pacifiers, have their bums powdered, or sleep in cribs. Some may go the extra mile and take part in “nursing,” but for most, the baby lifestyle and the trappings that come with it are all they need to be happy.
#9: Role-playing
This dress-up activity can be as simple or as complex as you care to make it - teacher and student; sexy cop and sexy motorist; shifty, heavily accented, long-haired bank working guy and emotionless blonde woman - anything goes! Do you want to be with James Bond? Do you want to BE James Bond? Be a different person, be a different gender, be a different species? Work your fantasy out beforehand, set limits, dress the set, and visit wardrobe or just wear nametags. The production values of your naughty romp are all up to you and your partner.
#8: Leather & Latex
Leather began taking on sexual connotations around the 1950s thanks in part to its association with motorcycles. Gay bikers took on leather as a macho stance against the more effeminate “campy” gay stereotype. From there, it branched out, slowly but surely, into the BDSM scene, 1970s German clubs, and even rock and roll. Cow-free alternatives, meanwhile, such as PVC and latex, found a mainstream foothold through shows like “The Avengers.” A PVC catsuit is still likely the outfit of choice for the dominatrix in your life. Broader than its gay roots, leather and its alternatives still project the same rough, powerful, sexy image.
#7: Sex Dolls
Typically employed by men more than women, sex dolls have been around in a far less advanced state since the 1600s. Early dolls looked a lot less like foxy ladies and more like a lumps of discarded clothing, but nonetheless... The modern doll took shape in the early 1900s, although the first big advances in sex dolls arrived in the 1970s. Entry-level models tend to be blow-up vinyl. Mid-range models are often latex with semi-realistic heads. PVC skeleton, silicone fleshed models make up the top of the range and all come in a variety of faces, bodies, and genders.
#6: Exhibitionism
A fairly broad fetish, exhibitionism is also our first potentially illegal activity. Ranging from basic mooning to simple streaking and flashing to sex acts in public or semi-public locations, showing off your goods is one of the oldest kinks in the kink-book. Instances were recorded in Ancient Greece, naturally, and even noted in the UK Vagrancy Act of 1824. Subcategories include anasyrma - skirt lifting - and candaulism - flashing a friend’s bits. While fun for consenting adults, some take it too far by springing their lewdness on children or with the intent to cause shock or mental harm, which is not cool.
#5: Spanking
Dating back to the fifth century BC, spanking was formally used in corporal punishment, child rearing, and even domestic discipline. Spanking seems to have moved on from being feared to being quite welcomed by many though. Rather than being utilized by husbands looking to keep their wives in line, spanking today is more likely to be a compliment towards one’s aesthetically pleasing backside. Some even up the ante by using paddles and canes or by wearing spanking skirts. Used in age play, mild bondage, or even just for a bit of a sizzle, a well-timed and generally consenting spank can be fun for all involved.
#4: Voyeurism
Referring to the watching of and enjoyment of watching others in the act or just in the buff, psychiatrists have a field day when it comes to voyeurism. The 5-0 meanwhile, are likely to inform you that being a peeping tom can be a sex crime or even a form of stalking. Studies have conflicting opinions on voyeurs. Some say they’re a stable, non-drinking, non-drugging lot. Others say they were late bloomers. Many also say they’re an oversexed pack of OCD sufferers. In fact, the only thing sexperts can agree on is that voyeurs are typically male.
#3: Underpants
This could go many ways... many, many ways. For some, it’s the sight of a fleshy bum wrapped in cotton. For others, it’s a high-rising whale-tail peaking out over a pair of jeans. Whether we’re talking about boy-bottoms, bikini cut, g-string, or full-on granny-panties, underwear has a fan base. Some men, gay or straight, enjoy wearing women’s underwear for personal pleasure, a feeling of humiliation, or even just the thrill of being caught. For others still, panties may be linked to a gender identity or even just a preference for silky materials.
#2: Podophilia
Otherwise known as foot fetishism, podophilia is a common partialism. The earliest known reference to a foot fetish can be dated back to 1220, while researchers feel the notion of sexy feet increased as a response to STDs in the pre-antibiotics era. Others speculate that foot appreciation is an act of humility on the part of the fetishist who may not feel worthy of the butts, boobs, legs, or abs that most are drawn to. Sigmund Freud, meanwhile, thought it was all those curves and toes. Mind you, Freud also saw the foot as a surrogate penis. Take from that what you will.
Before we unveil our top pick here are a few honourable mentions.
- Trichophilia aka Hair Fetish
- Thigh-High Boots and High Heels (Retifism or Shoe Fetishism)
- Vorarephilia
- Hematolagnia (Blood or Vampire Fetishists)
#1: BDSM
Once only the stuff of brown paper-wrapped foreign films and the playground of the truly deviated, bondage and related BDSM activities are becoming more and more part of the public consciousness. Such play can be something as simple as a prolonged spanking session, use of a blindfold or handcuffs, or something much more advanced such as rope play, harnesses or torture implements. The actual goal varies from person to person. It may to feel vulnerable and it could be to feel powerful. Sometimes it’s a full dehumanizing scheme to make a living artwork. But whatever you’re up to, set some ground rules and play safe.
