Top 10 Cringiest Met Gala Moments

Top 10 Cringiest Met Gala Moments
VOICE OVER: Kirsten Ria Squibb WRITTEN BY: Taryn Crankshaw
The Met Gala is full of glamor and cringe. For this list, we'll be looking at the most awkward and uncomfortable moments from fashion's biggest night. Our countdown includes Bennifer's mask kiss, Frank Ocean's baby, Selena Gomez's self-tanner, and more!

#10: Selena Gomez’s Self-Tanner

As a longtime attendee of the MET Gala, Selena Gomez has certainly served some memorable looks over the years–her 2018 ensemble being one of them. The "Only Murders in the Building" actress arrived in a flowy dress designed by Coach and a fresh tan. She looked stunning, of course, even if her tan did set in rather orange as opposed to the glowy bronze she was probably going for. Years later, she would confess that she didn’t realize the tanning lotion had led her astray until she was already inside the venue. Gomez poked fun at the whole thing on socials, which is about all the reaction we could have hoped for with a mishap like this!

#9: Streaker Crashes the Red Carpet

Everyone from Will Smith to Leonardo DiCaprio has fallen victim to the wild, often scary escapades of prankster Vitalii Sediuk. In 2014, Sediuk set his sights on causing a scene at the Met Gala when he attempted to rush onto the highly secured carpet wearing what can only be described as a pink neon Borat-inspired swimsuit. Fortunately, he didn't get very far as security ended up catching him pretty quickly and all the attendees were spared from having to witness his cringeworthy antics. The same can’t be said for many of his other pranks, though.

#8: Bennifer’s Mask Kiss

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemics, masks were the newest accessory on the Met Gala Red Carpet. Former flames Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck took their newly reignited relationship to the event that year, sporting very fashionable looks complete with matching masks. At one point, photographers captured a pic of the couple sharing a smooch…without breaking the health conscious dress code. It was a little weird to see the future husband-and-wife team packing on the PDA while wearing PPE, but we appreciate their commitment to following social distancing while still keeping things romantic.

#7: Jaden Smith Carries His Own Hair

There's really no telling what kind of interesting accessories a celeb might bring along to the Met Ball. In 2017, Jaden Smith complimented his look by carrying locks of his hair. He walked the entire red carpet clutching his trimmings which he reportedly cut for a film. Although it might have seemed like an odd choice, he actually did have his reasons. Smith's sister, Willow Smith, was unable to attend the Gala that year, so he decided to bring his hair instead. Sometime later, he appeared on "The Late Late Show with James Corden," where he brought his hair back to share with the late-night talk show host. During this interview, Smith also said that he brings his hair to moments he considers memorable in his life.

#6: J.Lo & Katy Perry’s Awkward Bathroom Moment

The year was 2019 and the theme of the Met Gala was Camp. While not everyone took the fun theme to heart, Katy Perry excelled. After walking the red carpet dressed as a chandelier, she slipped into something more comfortable. Wearing a very chic cheeseburger gown, Perry went full-on kitsch. During a washroom trip, she filmed a video to show fans how quickly she could get into the meaty dress. However, a surprised Jennifer Lopez also happened to walk by at the tail end of the video, and the two shared a rather weird exchange. We can't blame J.Lo for her reaction. After all, it's not every day you see a pop star dressed as a fast food staple.

#5: Keke Palmer & Brooklyn Beckham Interview

Keke Palmer did a fantastic job as a red carpet correspondent for the Met Gala in 2021. Interviewing the event's hottest stars, she got the details on everyone's glamorous outfits and more. When it came time for Brooklyn Beckham's interview, things got a little awkward. Appearing with his future wife, Nicola Peltz, Beckham was asked where he was from by Palmer, which gave away the fact that she didn't know who he was. As the son of soccer superstar David Beckham and former Spice Girl turned designer Victoria Beckham, this is a man who has lived his whole life in the spotlight, so this was probably a first for him.

#4: Frank Ocean’s Baby

Decked out in Prada, Frank Ocean arrived at the 2021 Met Ball with some unusual company. The "White Ferrari" singer/rapper brought along a green smiling robot baby as his companion. The doll was interactive and could do things like wave, and Ocean tended to it as if it were a real infant. He later stated its name was Cody and became quite the conversation starter over the course of the evening. Ocean even dyed his hair neon green to match his uh...son. We’re not sure what made him bring little Cody along, he definitely gets an A for committing to the look.

#3: Nicki Minaj & Demi Lovato’s Tension

During the 2016 Gala, Nicki Minaj and Demi Lovato were both dressed by Jeremy Scott. With Scott being the common thread between the two musicians, the three of them posed for photos. But, later, when Minaj posted the pic on Instagram, the "Substance" singer was decidedly excluded from being tagged in the caption. Big yikes. Lovato then posted a photo of her own where Minaj was giving them the side eye. Both pics have since been removed, but it didn't prevent fans from wondering what was really going down between the pair.

#2: Zooey Deschanel & Reese Witherspoon Mispronunciation

Since Cara Delevingne burst onto the fashion scene, it's been a long standing phenomenon that many people have had difficulty pronouncing her last name. From reporters to peers, everyone has a different way of saving it, but perhaps one of the worst attempts was captured on film. In a video from a past Met, Reese Witherspoon and Zooey Deschanel try to say Delevingne’s full name correctly but without much success. Model Kate Upton also makes a brief appearance. We’re not sure if it makes things better or worse that Delevingne is the one behind the camera.

#1: Kim Kardashian’s 2021 Look

From her jaw-dropping Thierry Mugler look to wearing Marilyn Monroe's dress, Kim Kardashian's Met Gala looks are something to behold. Never one to lack creativity, her 2021 fit was definitely a bit of a head scratcher. She arrived in a head-to-toe, face-covering black ensemble created by Balenciaga, where the only part of her body that wasn’t covered, was her high ponytail. Her husband at the time, Kanye West, joined her in a matching outfit. Kardashian later confessed she had her doubts about the outfit because she didn't understand why she needed to cover her face. After some coaxing from the design team, she eventually gave in and rocked one of the oddest but most memorable looks in Met history.
