#10: “Goodness Gracious”
Halcyon Days (2013)
Co-written by Nate Ruess of the American indie band Fun., this synthpop number exudes the feeling of being completely enamored with a former love. OR, you might say that “Goodness Gracious” is a polite way of saying “Good Lord, I think I might be obsessed with you.” Whatever the case, if you have a voice like Ellie Goulding, you can probably get away it, and the carefully masked lyrics are just innocent enough to hide the fact that someone’s looking for a little late night…cuddling.
#9: “Love Me like You Do”
Fifty Shades of Grey: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2015)
Speaking of late night cuddling, Elena Jane Goulding hopped on the “Fifty Shades of Grey” train for this Max Martin-produced hit. “Love Me Like You Do” was not only the second single for the blockbuster SexFest, but it was also a gentle anthem for everyone too afraid to say “I want you to sex me up.” With lyrics referencing an emotional high, satellites and even the holy grail, the lyrics that were partially penned by Tove Lo touched on just about everything that people enjoy, and as a result, the music video recently surpassed well over 500 million views.
#8: “Explosions”
Halcyon (2012)
Well, we hate to break it to you, Mojoholics, but Ellie Goulding isn’t as innocent as she seems. With this “explosive” dream pop song, the Brit conjures up images of ghosts and Kings, along with her soul bleeding in the dark. Ok, maybe it’s not exactly your typical love ballad, but it reminds listeners that it’s ok to move on from nasty breakups while still understanding the significance of the past. The third single from her huge album Halcyon, “Explosions” is ironically one of Ellie’s softest and most touching songs.
#7: “The Writer”
Lights (2010)
Well, this girl has a plan, and she wants you to mold her out of clay. Whaddya say? For the final single off her debut album Lights, Ellie Goulding took a folkier approach for a track that hit home for listeners everywhere. It’s truly a fairytale of a song, and given the backdrop of a Norfolk lighthouse in the music video, it’s one of those ballads that couples imagine while roaming about the countryside and holding hands.
#6: “Starry Eyed”
Lights (2010)
Here’s a song about letting go, but it’s also the track that introduced Ellie Goulding to American television audiences. Lyrically, she dropped all inhibitions when writing “Starry Eyed,” as its about having fun, whether it be from a natural high or by taking recreational drugs as Ellie puts it. Well, in that case, the lyrics take on a new meaning, am I right? Whatever the case, the electropop beat and repetitive lyrics caught on with younger listeners, as “Starry Eyed” was featured on numerous popular MTV shows.
#5: “My Blood”
Halcyon (2012)
Brilliantly written and extravagant in instrumentation, Ms. Goulding released this existential track on her second studio album, and fans immediately embraced the lyrical depth and palms-to-the-sky chorus. With some hard hitting drums, and the vocals of Goulding being as angelic as ever, the lyrics call out to God about her bloodstained body, and anyone can relate the song’s connection of lost love being painful. “My Blood” is a surrealistic gem of electropop music, and the singer’s live performances are even more electrifying.
#4: “Burn”
Halcyon Days (2013)
Co-written by Ryan Tedder of One Republic and originally recorded by Leona Lewis, this infectious Synthpop release earned Ellie her first #1 in the UK. In essence, she’s building on the concept of fighting for what you believe in and your passion will catch on with others. Get it? Kind of like a fire! “Burn” tore up the charts and inspired young females to mimic Ellie’s vocal intonations for hours upon hours on end. And why not? It’s a catchy, catchy track.
#3: “Figure 8”
Halcyon (2012)
Not only does Ellie slay this song’s personal lyrics, but she’s also got the dubstep beat goin’ on, thus marking a notable shift in her sound and worldwide appeal. Starting off slow, and exploding in the song’s chorus, the overall package of “Figure 8” was a welcomed surprise for the Ellie Goulding fans of the world and helped the album Halcyon go three times platinum in the U.K. Possibly sonically inspired by Skrillex, who was at one point romantically involved with Ellie, we couldn’t be more pleased with the direction that she went on this track.
#2: “Anything Could Happen”
Halcyon (2012)
For the lead single off her second album, Ellie came out swinging with a timeless production that looks back at the past, and most importantly, embraces the present. The music video for the instant pop classic featured Ellie as some sort of bleeding beach time traveler, and the song has now been covered by some of music’s biggest stars. With lyrics referencing an unknown future, “Anything Could Happen” is the ideal musical number to kick off any type of journey.
Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

#1: “Lights”
Bright Lights (2010)
Well, she’s come a long way. Today, Ellie Goulding writes iconic pop anthems, however five years ago she was singing about her fear of the dark. Believe it or not, “Lights” was actually only released on the re-release of her debut album entitled Bright Lights, but the overall groove of the song and the hypnotic vocals propelled “Lights” up the charts. Of course, everybody knows her name now, but it was “Lights” that took us out of the dark.
