#10: Action Bronson
Formerly known as Ariyan Arslani, this boisterous, and thickly bearded rapper might make you laugh just by looking at him. But Bronson brings more than just his comical appearance to the table. He has a way with words, aand possibly even more skill in the kitchen. A culinary school graduate and gourmet fire-flame chef, Bronson has taken a unique path to rap stardom and often incorporates his passion for food into his lyrics. More recently he’s taken his talents back to the kitchen and onto our TV screens. If not for the food, watch it just for Bronson’s uniquely entertaining comic relief.
#9: Lil Dicky
David Andrew Burd probably isn’t where he thought he'd be at 30. A graduate from the University of Richmond, Burd was a class-clown who dreamed about becoming a comedian, actor and writer before falling in love with rap. Out of university, he went on to work for an advertising agency, where he would often deliver his monthly progress reports in the form of a rap, which earned him a promotion to the firm's creative department. Finally, his break came when he released the video to “Ex-Boyfriend.” One million views and 24 hours later, Lil Dicky was born.
#8: Young Thug
Born Jeffery Lamar Williams, Young Thug has quickly become one of Atlanta’s greatest. On the surface, you might not think of him as “funny”, but his style and general day-to-day antics say otherwise. He’s genuinely unpredictable; wears kids-size dresses as t-shirts and calls his close friends “sexy” and “hubbie.” But also he’s considered a revolutionary, and that’s what makes him so uniquely special. Williams’ eccentric and often unintelligible lyrics set him apart from the rest of the pack. In fact, his distinct voice has made him one of the most sought after rappers of his generation.
#7: Tyler, the Creator
One of the biggest enigma's in rap today, Tyler the Creator, has never stuck to what we’d call “the norm.” Always goofing around with the Odd Future gang, Tyler has since emerged as a talented solo artist while still maintaining his sense of humor. In some ways, Tyler is a boy in a man's body, always bouncing off the walls and making people laugh. Regarding his lyrics he’s been quoted as saying “If it offends you, it offends you.” So don’t expect this carefree rapper to change anytime soon. We certainly hope he doesn’t.
#6: Danny Brown
Sometimes sporting an untamed Afro, fitted jeans, and cowboy boots; Danny Brown is far from your stereotypical rapper. Like most of the rappers on this list, Brown has a certain joie de vivre about him. He doesn’t care what people think about his rap style or wardrobe; he just wants to be Danny Brown. His lyrics can be crass, x-rated and generally hilarious, while his boisterous personality and general outlook on life is refreshing to see in the hip-hop world. Plus, once you’ve heard that signature giggle, you can’t help but laugh.
#5: Ol’ Dirty Bastard
One of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, aka ODB, was always considered one of raps funniest personalities. He always kept things lively at awards nights, like that time he shouted,“Wu-Tang is for children!” at the Grammy’s . Known to fans as ‘Big Baby Jesus’, ODB left a huge footprint on the hip-hop community with his bizarre antics and one-of-a-kind rapping style that always left people entertained, if not a little confused.
#4: Childish Gambino
Speaking of Wu Tang, this next rapper got his name from their random name generator. Better known as Donald Glover, you can say he’s basically done it all. We all know he can sing, act, and direct, but his comedic talents are understated as of late. Having cut his teeth with 30 Rock and Community, Glover proved to be just as comfortable performing stand up, with his “Weirdo” special receiving tons of critical acclaim. Whether he’s breaking down cereal addiction in a stand up routine, cracking people up on “Community” or busting out his signature dance moves, being funny is just one of Childish Gambino’s many talents.
#3: Ludacris
Often regarded as a phenomenal lyricist and insatiably funny, Ludacris was known more for exuding a larger-than-life type attitude. And it always came through in his music videos. While rappers tend to show off their manliness or brag about their insane cash low, Luda did it in hilarious ways – like in his “Get Back” video. There, Ludacris is given a pretty obvious upgrade from the moment the video begins: freakishly muscular Pop-Eye arms. He has a knack for creating a funny lyric or hook that just won’t get out of your head, and will surely will be remembered as one of hip hop’s most beloved jokesters.
#2: Eminem
Inspired by the Beastie Boys' “Licensed to Ill”, Eminem decided to pursue a career in rap – and … that's worked out well for him. The proverbial “bad boy” of rap, Eminem turned the music industry on its head with his tremendous attitude and seemingly careless – and often controversial – lyrics. But, Eminem doesn't do anything accidentally. He's proven to have mastered the English language, and he loves to mess with other rappers and Hollywood stars. He truly has a unique ability to get under peoples’ skin with his quick wit and hilarious insults, and has only gotten better as he matures.
Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:
Lil Pump
Larry June
Beastie Boys
#1: Snoop Dogg
Snoop is a living and breathing meme with his pimp-inspired outfits, outlandish thoughts, and odd music videos. Bursting onto the scene decades ago, the then Snoop Doggy Dogg was noted for his unique comedic style, which went against the traditional gangster rap we grew to love from the West Coast. His song, “Sensual Seduction,” is just one example of Snoop completely goofing off, while delivering a hilariously crafted story. He’s a freestyling king, a emperor of marijuana and has absolutely no problem laughing at himself. Keep doing you Snoop!
