#10: Naked Wrestling
“Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” (2006)
Every time you think “Borat” can’t possibly become any more jarring, Sacha Baron Cohen throws another hysterically jaw-dropping antic at his audience. The film officially peaks in the shock department as Borat stumbles upon his beloved Pamela Anderson booklet cheating on him with Azamat. Interrupting the hand-party, Borat throws himself at his backstabbing friend and a nude battle for Pamela’s honor commences. The fight takes Borat over Azamat’s buttock, under his scrotum, and through a hotel, asserting that Baron Cohen will officially do anything to make us laugh.
#9: Singin’ and Fightin’ in the Rain
“Shanghai Knights” (2003)
Few living performers combine action and comedy better than Jackie Chan. One of his funniest action sequences occurs in “Shanghai Knights” when he and Owen Wilson anger some Brits at a market. Chan jumps, climbs, and fights through the marketplace as if it were a jungle gym, even working a “Singin’ in the Rain” reference in there. Every bit as whimsical as it is cool, this is the kind of action scene Charlie Chaplin would direct if he knew Kung-Fu, which actually cleverly ties into the story.
#8: To Protect and Party
“21 Jump Street” (2012)
Morton Schmidt wasted his high school career reading, getting shot down by girls, and modeling his wardrobe after Slim Shady. As an undercover drug narc, though, Schmidt is finally given a chance to throw a kickass party, knock out an unwanted guest, win the respect of his peers, get busted by his stoned parents, and even walk away from the experience with a battle wound. Schmidt is sadly brought back down to reality, however, during an equally humorous scuffle at a performance of Peter Pan.
#7: Isla Cruces Wheel Fight
“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” (2006)
Say what you will about the “Pirates of the Caribbean” sequels, but “Dead Man’s Chest” in particular had some of the most inventive action set pieces this side of “Indiana Jones.” The highlight of the film is a wonderfully staged duel between Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and James Norrington, all of whom wish to claim the key to Davey Jones’ chest. The strife sends them tossing, turning, and rolling through the jungle, ultimately resulting in swashbuckling sword fight atop a runaway spinning wheel. Improbable? Sure. Entertaining as hell? Definitely.
#6: Final Graveyard Shootout
“Seven Psychopaths” (2012)
Who says every action movie must end with a shootout? Sam Rockwell does as he envisions the climax for “Seven Psychopaths.” In his vision, every psychopath emerges in a graveyard for a final showdown. Even if this scene didn’t visualize the action, watching Rockwell fervently act out the scene would be just as hilarious. Not only is the scene funny, it also provides a glimpse into Rockwell’s character’s mind, which has clearly been warped by watching too many violent movies. At least he spared his best friends and the animals.
#5: The Battle for Sandford
“Hot Fuzz” (2007)
While the bar brawl from “Shaun of the Dead” just as easily could have made this list, we’re going with the Battle for Sandford in “Hot Fuzz.” This second installment to Edgar Wright’s “Cornetto” trilogy spends most of its running time poking fun at illogical action blockbusters. Then in its final act, the film gives into all the action clichés it previously mocked. This bloody brilliant climax has everything. The lone hero riding a horse, mindless explosions, old people getting injured. Yet ironically, virtually nobody dies during the entire battle.
#4: Bob Barker Brawl
“Happy Gilmore” (1996)
Of all the celebrities that have made random cameos in Adam Sandler’s movies, Bob Barker in “Happy Gilmore” is by far the funniest. After Bob criticizes his golfing partner one too many times, Happy loses his cool and throws a punch at the old man. To everyone’s surprise, this senior game show host knows a thing or two about opening a can of whoop-ass. With the intense, wide eyes of an unstoppable killing machine and the strength of an “Expendable,” Barker shows Happy that the price is indeed right.
#3: The Black Knight
“Monty Python and the Holy Grail” (1975)
Although every warrior should possess the will to fight on, they should also know when to admit defeat. This unnamed black knight never knows when to say when throughout a duel with King Arthur. Even after Arthur robs him of both his arms and legs, the black knight refuses to let a few minor flesh wounds stand in his way. The visuals alone are enough to put you in stitches, but the Monty Python crew pile onto the hilarity with one classic one-liner after another.
#2: Austin vs. Mini-Me
“Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me” (1999)
Mini-Me might be 1/8th Dr. Evil’s size, but he’s at least 8X a superior fighter. In “The Spy Who Shagged Me,” the clone is unleashed to tear Austin apart. Although Austin’s a top secret agent, Mini-Me still gets the upper hand with cheap moves straight from a schoolyard bully’s playbook. Even as Mini-Me makes him whimper, Austin is convinced his opponent is as innocent as a Chihuahua. After throwing each other around like dolls, Austin finally prevails using his secret weapon: Toilet humor! How does Mini-Me breathe in space, though?
Before we fight our way to our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:
- Train Tracks
“Get Smart” (2008)
- Chopstick Duel
“Kung Fu Panda” (2008)
- Dream of Large Women
“The Princess Bride” (1987)
- Zeppelin Fight
“Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989)
#1: Red’s House
“Pineapple Express” (2008)
Dale and Saul believe they’ve found sanctuary at fellow pothead Red’s house, only to realize he’s planning to sell them out. The peaceful morning of cake baking quickly escalates to a brawl of sluggish proportions. What makes this scene especially uproarious is how over-the-top it manages to be while also being totally nonchalant. Red seems much more distraught about his broken door and portable phone than his own mangled body. It perfectly sums up the heroes of “Pineapple Express,” remaining laidback and aimless even in the most intense circumstances.
