Top 10 Games for Non-Gamers

Need a gentle introduction to the vast world of video games? We’ve got you covered. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we are counting down our picks for the top ten games for non-gamers.

For this list, we’ll be looking at video games that can be enjoyed by any and all newcomers to the medium.

#10: “Monument Valley” (2014)

Puzzle games are one of those genres that from the outside can seem a little off-putting, especially the more challenging ones. However, the adventures of Princess Ida just might convince you to give this one a try once you take a gander at its beautiful mazes. Inspired by classic paintings, each level incorporates optical illusions along with differing mechanics to ensure that while the experience will push you to use your head, at least you will have stunning backdrops to dazzle you in the meantime.

#9: “Abzû” (2016)

Speaking of beautiful, for those who aren’t exactly fans of heavy dialogue and action can take comfort in this little number, wherein a whole ocean becomes your playground. As the Diver, players are greeted to the wonders of marine life as they explore submerged ruins and all manner of aquatic wonders. It may be slightly more linear in nature that some are expecting, but with such entrancing sights to behold and the option of riding around on the back of sharks, it’s fair to say that this particular ocean is filled with fun content.

#8: “The Telltale Games Library”

It doesn’t matter if it’s a television show, comic book, even other video games, once Telltale get their claws on it then you know you’re guaranteed to get an episodic series that will tug on your heartstrings every which way. From The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, Tales of the Borderlands all the way to Batman, each entry presents players with a narrative fuelled experience packed with plenty of action, difficult choices and complex characters that you’ll undoubtedly grow attached to. For those that have yet to feel emotionally invested in a video game, we can’t recommend these highly enough.

#7: “Guitar Hero” series (2005-15)

Rock and roll fantasies, here we come! For those who love music and the heavy rock scene but don’t fancy going out of their way to practise on an actual guitar, then this might be a dream come true. With its unique controller and a whole plethora of songs to choose from, the gameplay is as far from you typical video game as you can get. Whether newcomers just want a casual play or are aiming to become a bona-fide Rock God, the addictive nature of Guitar Hero’s distinct style will have you shredding away in no time.

#6: “Wii Sports” (2006)

If there’s a video game that anyone of any age can easily slip into, it would be this launch title for the Wii. Taking full advantage of the Wiimote’s motion controls, players are given a choice of five modes to compete in: golf, tennis, boxing, baseball and of course, bowling. Simple yet effective, its ideal for novices who are just after a fun time with a group and don’t have to worry about inputting a long stream of button combinations. That, or you’re really desperate to live out a dream as a professional bowler.

#5: “Just Dance” series (2009-)

Whether you’re a pro or just like to get jiggy with it when no one is looking, dancing is something that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, including video games! Definitely one you want to bust out with your buddies, the motion control encourages both a fair challenge as well as a lot of laughs. Combine it with a catchy and fun soundtrack, and you have a game that makes a dancer of everybody.

#4: “Brain Age” series (2005-)

While you would often associate video games as being purely for entertainment, on the odd occasion you do find the little gems that like to blur the line with education. Case in point; this Nintendo DS series inspired by the real life works of Japanese neuroscientist Ryuta Kawashima. While it may not exactly be scientifically proven to make you smarter, solving mathematical problems, memory games and Sudoku in creative mini-games certainly makes mentally stimulating tasks far more enjoyable. If you’re looking to kill time and not worry about your brain cells dying then why not put yourself to the test?

#3: “Mario Kart 8” (2014)

Despite such an enduring franchise, the beauty of the Mushroom Kingdom’s number one plumber is that you can take any game in his series and literally jump in at any point and enjoy the experience to its fullest, whether you’re a long-time fan or have never even heard of the guy. For those in the latter category, there’s no better entry to get on board than Mario and company’s latest driving exploit. With numerous out of this world tracks to overcome, even those opposed to racing games won’t be able to resist its colour and charm.

#2: “Tetris” (1984)

This one is a no brainer. The tile-matching puzzle game to end all tile-matching puzzle games, Tetris has managed to remain a classic throughout the years, constantly finding itself revamped and ported to a number of consoles. However, its core mechanics have always remained the same, and through its uncomplicatedness opens the way for literally anyone to have go. Sure, it may not be the most thrilling of games, but there’s no denying how effective the formula has remained.

Before we reveal our number one pick, here are a few honourable mentions.

“Pokemon GO” (2016)

“INSIDE” (2016)

“RollerCoaster Tycoon” series (1999-)

#1: “The Sims” series (2000-)

In terms of giving every player an original experience packed with both intricate customisation and longevity, the Sims take home the gold. With the option to create as little or as much content as the player desires, this legendary life simulation game offers anyone the chance to construct their own personal Sim, the house they live in as well as their career, family and interests. With the only limit being the player’s imagination, non-gamers everywhere should get a kick out of playing a virtual god.
