These games are all about putting a bang in your buck. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today, we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Games That Release the Most Free Content!
For this list, we’re considering games famous for their overly generous updates, giving players free content in the form of more maps, extra playable characters, or additional game modes. However, we’re excluding free-to-play games, as some of their free content comes with an asterisk. Sorry, Warframe! We still love you!
#10: “DOOM” (2016)
Even though the DLC may not have been originally free, we still gotta give “DOOM” a spot on this list. On top of being one of the best games of 2016, the DLC was worth every penny that went into our purchase. With extra weapons, additional maps, and more playable demons to slaughter your enemies with, “DOOM” gave us a hell of a good time. Today, you can get the game between twenty and thirty bucks. Plus, thanks to the appropriately named Version 6.66 update, all of the DLC is available to all players for free! What a steal!
#9: “Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege” (2015)
In between the patches of balance adjustments and improving the game’s performance, “Rainbow Six Siege’s” main attraction is in the new operator characters. These special soldiers hold special abilities to give the team (depending on Attacking or Defending positions) an edge on the battlegrounds. In case you don’t have enough currency to buy them on their release day, Ubisoft gives plenty of opportunities for players to rack up enough currency to unlock the new guys. Add in the new locations, new cosmetics, more game modes, shiny gadgets…ugh! “Rainbow Six Siege” is just a good time!
#8: “Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2” (2016)
Tired of bloody, intense, over-the-top competitive shooters? Need something with a little more charm and personality? “Garden Warfare 2” has got you covered! Since its launch in February 2016, the game has seen some meaty updates to give us more fun activities. Chomper’s Pizza Delivery will test your speed and knowledge of the HUB world’s layout. The Trials of Gnomus gave us combat challenges and scheduled events to take part in with the “Garden Warfare” community. Whether we’re Plants or Zombies, we just can’t get enough of this game!
#7: “Titanfall 2” (2016)
“Titanfall 2” was a victim of circumstance, releasing during a bad time in the holiday season caused it to suffer in sales. That being said, it’s nice to see Respawn Entertainment continuously shell out free updates and new content for the community. So far, we’ve seen drops of new maps and executions that keep the battles fresh and exciting, forcing us to learn a new layout and create new strategies. As a bonus, some of these updates have given us co-op challenges to tackle with a friend. Seriously, hop aboard the “Titanfall 2” train before it leaves the station for the next entry.
#6: “Diablo III” (2012)
If you felt that “Diablo III” was a little light on content at launch, hopefully you’ve gone back to see the updates. In case you haven’t, allow us to fill you in. First there was the “Darkening of Tristam” expansion, which allowed players to revisit the first game, adding in a new dungeon, four classic bosses, special graphics filters, and the same limited 8-direction movement like the old days. Nice touch! The game got beefy after the “Reaper of Souls” expansion, which improved many of the game’s features and added in an Adventure mode containing missions and dungeons that kept us playing “Diablo III” longer.
#5: “Friday the 13th: The Game” (2017)
Since release, “Friday the 13th” has been like having a giant bag of candy…if said bag was full of lollipops with a creamy, bloody, viscera center, but we digress. Developers Gun Media and Illfonic has been more than generous with their updates. We’ve seen new maps based on the films, new playable counselors, new variations of Jason from the films (with Jason X coming soon), and new game modes! Virtual Cabin 2.0 was a marvelous addition to the game! Have we piqued your interest? Admission is only forty bucks!
#4: “Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)
When it comes to the reasoning behind “GTA V” selling like hotcakes five years after release, there’s no doubt that its online game mode is partially responsible. Throughout the years, Rockstar Games has provided us with new game content for us to screw around in with our friends. For example, Heists, which was based off part of the main story, allows us to team up with our friends to carry out…well, heists. Then, there’s Smuggler’s Run, which brought a new roster of sweet vehicles to wreck. So long as the sales keep climbing, “GTA V” may never die.
#3: “Overwatch” (2016)
The world can always use more heroes, and Blizzard is continuously given us just that. We’ve seen some interesting additions to the game such as healing sniper Ana, anchor tank Orisa, melee offense Doomfist, hacker Sombra, and spray healer Moira. On top of that, we’ve seen some awesome additions to the map rotation like Junkertown, Horizon Lunar Colony, and the whimsical Blizzard World. The game modes, as basic as they may be, have given us plenty of reasons to keep playing.
#2: “Splatoon” (2015)
Nintendo doing a competitive shooter? You’re damn right, and they did it well! Not only was “Splatoon” worth the price of admission, but it also featured fun events (or “Splatfests”) like pizza versus hamburgers and cats versus dogs. But, holy crap, the free content! We’ve had new weapons like the Inkbrush, the Sploosh-o-matic, and even an NES Zapper! We also got to enjoy brand new maps like Port Mackerel, Urchin Underpass, and Flounder Heights! Sucks that it was only on Wii U, but at least we got “Splatoon 2” on the Switch, which has just as much content pouring out as its predecessor.
#1: “Dying Light” (2015)
It has been three whole years since launch, and “Dying Light” is still going strong! The free content has added some awesome items, kickass vehicles, and some of the deadliest of weapons to help us survive the zombie apocalypse. We’ve also seen new locations, new soldier types, zombie types, and additional customizable items. But, wait! There’s more…a hell of a lot more! Developer Techland came out in July 2017 to announce more DLC leading into Summer 2018. Look’s like this game certainly won’t be ‘dying’ any time soon!
