Top 10 Video Game Fan Theories That Turned Out TRUE!

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we’re looking at 10 Among Us fan theories that are so crazy they just might be true. For this list, we’ll be looking at some of the wackiest explanations on offer for what exactly Among Us is all about. Reckon you’ve got a better theory? Let us know in the comments!

Shared Universe

We’ll start with one which almost goes beyond a theory to being an established fact - the Among Us crew appear to share a universe with the inhabitants of another InnerSloth series, Henry Stickmin. The first major clue came with the arctic-themed map, Polus, which seems to be named after Polus Petrovich - a character from the Stickmin games who was said to have won the chance to name a planet in a sweepstake. Does that mean that the Among Us crew’s home world is in fact that planet? It’s hard to say but the game is littered with other nods to the series - Henry’s teleporter can be seen in the ship’s garbage chute, a portrait of him can be found on the wall in Polus and several of the hats which crew members can wear were first seen in the Stickmin games.

While there are plenty of sinister theories about what is going on inside the game - some of which we’ll get to in a moment - there have also been a few conspiracy theories about what’s going on in the background. Some have suggested that the reason Among Us has been made so cheap and has been built to be so endlessly addictive is that it’s actually stealing your data while you play. That might all sound a bit like a Mr.Robot plot but there is a logic to it - people are playing it on phones and computers which store all of their most valuable personal information and the game is sure to keep plenty of people playing it for hours at a time, blissfully unaware of what else it might be doing. So in that case the real imposter would be...the game itself? Someone call a meeting! Among Us is sus!

After a while, many players began to notice that one particular colour seemed to be a little more sus than any other. Game after game, it seemed like Red was acting suspicious way more than anyone else. It even spawned a whole “Red is sus” meme. Players are free to change their colour before each match starts and it is theoretically just a cosmetic choice but is it possible that there is actually some hidden mechanic which makes red players more likely to be the imposter? Or do we just think that because of our natural association of the colour red with aggression and danger? One of the best things about Among Us is how it can drive otherwise reasonable people towards this sort of paranoid overanalysis.

The Sequel Was a Lie

After Among Us suddenly became a global sensation two years after its initial release, InnerSloth announced that, while they had previously intended to release a sequel, they were now going to incorporate all of the new content into the original game instead. Taken at face value, it’s a nice example of a developer signing up for extra work to serve the players that are enjoying the game rather than cashing in with a follow-up. But the Among Us fans have learned to survive by trusting nothing and no-one, so naturally some have suggested that this was all just a PR stunt - there was never going to be a sequel in the first place. After all, think how devious the people who designed a game like this would have to be!

Vents Are Portals

One of the more low-key points of intrigue inside the Among Us universe is how exactly do the vents work? At a glance, you would assume that the imposter is simply clambering into an air vent and then scurrying along until they find a new place to pop out. Just like in Alien, one of the sci-fi classics which clearly inspired the game. But if so, how come they can move between rooms almost instantaneously? And aren’t the vents actually far too small? One theory is that the vents are actually portals, allowing the imposter to teleport between rooms. It’s a bit outlandish and there’s not really much evidence but this is a game where shapeshifting aliens murder people in outer space, so not much is off the table.

Area 51

If you thought the data stealing conspiracy was a pretty wild then hold on to your hat - what if the game was actually designed by a discontented Area 51 employee who wanted a clandestine way to leak classified information to the public? Again, the game’s low price and simplicity would help ensure it got into plenty of hands. And we all know that Area 51 is just teeming with aliens, perhaps even shapeshifters like the ones in Among Us! On the other hand, it’s possible that Area 51 was just on a lot of people’s minds after the attempts to “storm” it in 2019.

Divide Us

Another sinister plot which has been suggested as the game’s true purpose is that it’s really a tool designed to sow discord amongst the public by creating an atmosphere of paranoia and distrust. That might sound like a lot of power to ascribe to a little game about spacemen killing each other but anyone who's played it for a few hours might have found themselves side-eyeing those around them a bit more afterwards. The roommate, the mailman, the hamster - suddenly everyone around you is starting to look a little bit sus... In the end, spending so much time around imposters might turn us all into characters from another one of the sci-fi classics which inspired the game, The Thing.

Where It All Began

Since Among Us doesn’t have any kind of story mode, some have tried to draw connections between the game’s various maps to pin down exactly how the crew found themselves being stalked from the shadows by a shapeshifting predator. One theory is that the crew accidentally allowed an alien onto the ship while going about their business out in space, just like in Alien. They then inadvertently brought it back to their HQ and that’s how the imposters arrived everywhere else. Another goes the other way around - the crew accidentally created the shapeshifters as a part of their experiments back home and it spread from there. But of course it’s also possible that the imposters came from somewhere else entirely and have already spread everywhere else before the game begins - our embattled crew could be the only non-imposters left in existence!

As well as wondering where the imposter came from, many have also asked who exactly the crew are? Their appearance is sort of ambiguous - they’re kind of human-shaped in a cartoony sort of way but we never see them without their spacesuits, so they might also be some sort of alien. When they get chopped in half, we can see that their anatomy consists of basically one big bone down the middle, but this all could just be a cartoony way of rendering a human character. The wallet used in the card-scanning tasks includes a photo of the crew together, which would seem to suggest that they are either friends or family but beyond that, who knows!

At the start of each game, some players are simply told that they are the imposter. They look exactly like all the others and they never do anything to confirm either that they can shapeshift or that they’re a different species from the rest of the crew. Sure, they can impale others on their tongue but since the whole crew are potentially aliens, how do we know they can't all do that? And the rest of the time they’re just some dude running around stabbing, shooting and neck-snapping their friends - so what if they are not actually a shapeshifting imposter but a regular crewmate who lost it and went on a rampage? Maybe the killer has become convinced that the others are imposters who must be stopped. Sure, the game’s website says that there really is an imposter...but isn’t that just what they’d want you to think?
