Sometimes failing can be pretty enjoyable. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’ll be counting down the Top 10 Games Where It’s Fun To Fail.
For this list, we’ll be looking at the games where failure doesn’t always mean frustration for gamers, but can lead to enjoyable, learning, and even hilarious experiences. Also, while some of these fails may be funny, they can get pretty gruesome, so here’s a mature warning.
#10: “Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes” (2015)
Bomb defusal can be seen as one of the most tense and stressful jobs… so why not turn it into a party game? Requiring at least two players - one player defuses, while the others have to read the defusal manual. Neither party can look at each other’s progress, forcing people to work through vocal instructions alone. Make sure you can trust your friends, as they might just give you the wrong information to speed up the timer or bring about your imminent doom. Sometimes reading the wrong information can be quite funny from the manual reader's perspective though.
#9: “Super Meat Boy” (2010)
Being a square block of meat can have its advantages - (Meat Boy death) and disadvantages. Circular saws, piles of rusty nails, salt, and lasers are a few of the obstacles that await Meat Boy on his extremely difficult platforming adventure. While many gamers may view the hair trigger timing and slippery platforming as frustrating, they’ll still attest to how fun this game truly is. A lot of the game is trial and error, yet with each death, you grow smarter and develop as a player -thanks in part to your bloody remains coating the level.
#8: “Octodad: The Dadliest Catch” (2014)
Being a dad an be quite tough, being an octopus married to a human wife and father to human children is ludicrous. Surprisingly, only a Japanese chef can see through your eight legged disguise. That won’t stop Octodad from being the best dad he can be, as he stumbles around and accidently adheres to furniture, walls, and other items. The wobbly physics and control scheme make it difficult, but stumbling around and leaving a mess in your wake is hilarious fun. Good to know no one else seems to care about the destruction he causes.
#7: “Overcooked” (2016)
How is it that cooking in video games can be so much fun? While most cooking sims are strictly single-player, Overcooked turns the fun into a co-op party game. As you rush to get out orders, you’ll face countless obstacles -usually from your questionable kitchen locations (Kitchens on trucks)- like the usual time limits, to overcooking the meals, to even bumping into each other. It’s silly fun for everyone as you argue about where everyone needs to be and constantly scramble to make various foods. Even if you fail, you can always try again at another odd location.
#6: “Goat Simulator” (2014)
We’ve seen goats defy physics in real life before (News footage of a Goat moving up near-vertical incline), but bouncing 200 feet into the air seems to be a new one. Playing as a goat, your objective is to… well.. I’m not sure exactly. While you can’t necessarily “fail” in Goat Simulator, getting caught in various bugs, stretched out, and flung across the map is absolutely hilarious to watch. In fact, the more self harm you inflict upon yourself in the most unique ways awards you massive points, which doesn’t really do a whole lot, but who cares? You’re a physics defying goat!
#5: “Happy Wheels” (2010)
The only happiness found here is from the player. A surprise hit of a flash game, this mutilation simulator offers you a variety of people destined to meet their maker in various gruesome ways. While it started as a platformer, Happy Wheels has evolved into other genres thanks in part to its community-made maps. Getting to the end with your body intact is fun, sure, but seeing your splattered remains land on the finish line is hilarious in of itself. A bloody good time to be had, except for the Irresponsible Dad’s kid… (kid dies)
#4: “Grand Theft Auto V” (2013)
Being a carefree criminal with no respect for sidewalks can be pretty fun, but it’s how the AI reacts to your carefree nature where the real fun is. From cops slamming into you and deeming you a criminal for their misdeeds, or a war of who has the biggest gun in multiplayer, failing has never been so enjoyable. When GTA’s signature crazy physics comes into play, along with basic glitches and community-made maps, hilarity is bound to ensue. We can only hope Rockstar will never change, keeping their crazy AI and physics intact for a long time to come.
#3: “Besiege” (2015)
History has seen many clever contraptions to laying siege to fortresses, from large wooden horses, to catapults, to armored tanks. Now it’s up to you to design your own sieging contraption. Unfortunately, engineering a weapon of destruction isn’t that easy, and you’re bound to go through a lot of trial and error phases. Of course that’s all part of the fun, as you build various vehicles, catapults, battering rams and so much more to lay waste to sheep, castles and villagers -only to have them usually blow up before the deed is done. I guess you should be glad you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure this out.
#2: “Kerbal Space Program” (2015)
Getting to the final frontier can be difficult, and it DOES involve rocket science ...and Kerbals. You’re in charge of building various ships to get these adorable little creatures into outer space, and the amount of agency provided to build those ships is enormous. Part of the fun is building insane contraptions and seeing how far you can get, while the other part is how you will more than likely fail and blow up mid-flight. It’s a good thing -though bad for them- that Kerbals are so silly looking, so their explosive deaths can be light-hearted.
#1: “Surgeon Simulator 2013” (2013)
Who says you need practice to be a successful surgeon? The title is just as it sounds, as you perform various surgeries on various patients and become the star surgeon you were born to be. Too bad the controls are difficult and the surgeries are challenging for you, as you pick and pull and sometimes even sever certain parts to grab at your patient’s heart, eyes, and other innards. As hilarious as it is fun to see you accidentally server an artery, it becomes a race against time to complete the surgery before the patient bleeds out. Hey, at least they got infinite back-ups of patients.
