Based on the book series by the same name, “The Witcher” dealt with some pretty heavy issues, like racism and prejudice, and landed Geralt of Rivia, a half-human hybrid warrior, right in the middle of it all. Although a standard product of the era, with longer loading times and multiple bugs, this open-world RPG still has a special place in our hearts. “The Witcher” gave players some tough moral hurdles to overcome, and its engaging storyline, along with the well-designed world environment, outweigh any other technical issues or design flaws the game has, making this an RPG for the ages.

Ever since our very first “Leap of Faith”, we were hooked. Sprinting across 12th Century rooftops as the ancient assassin Altair gave us everything we wanted.... why they had to tie it together with a science-fiction memory macguffin is beyond us. With a beautiful open world to explore and countless enemies to dispatch with a variety of colorful weapons and tactics. Standing out from the usual “run-and-gun” gameplay style, AC showed us the satisfaction of a perfectly timed distraction, and a quick getaway. For a game to make us enjoy slowing down and really appreciating a kill is nothing short of remarkable, and it set the tone for a whole new generation of stealth.

Developed by BioWare, the champions of Western RPGs, “Mass Effect” delivered an immersive sci-fi experience like no other. It took the concept of “player’s choice” to a whole ‘nother level. From combat class to romantic orientation, this game let the player decide it all, even fulfilling the national dream of gettin’ it on with an alien. Although a bit lacking in the combat department, with clunky squad commands and questionable AI, “Mass Effect” more than made up for it in it’s depth of character and story arching, with fans clamoring for a sequel almost immediately. Even amidst the drama surrounding the culmination of the series, “Mass Effect” remains an unforgettable journey.

The Playstation 3 had a very rough first year with a high price tag and lackluster titles, but “Uncharted” gave Sony fans just what they needed. This tried-and-true tale of a young Nathan Drake, hunting for his ancestor’s lost treasure, is exactly the kind of story that draws you in and doesn’t let go. With adventure, mystery, and a twist ending, we were in love. While the endless waves of enemy pirates may get tiresome at times, the different environments and the stellar AI keep things fresh and interesting. A balanced blend of combat and puzzles, with beautiful artwork and a fast-paced gameplay, this Naughty Dog production gave rise to an entire franchise and beloved videogame icon.
