#10: Soccer 2012
To commemorate holidays and special events, Google Doodle will typically give the homepage’s logo a fancy makeover. For the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games, several sports-themed doodles were released. As much as we love a good game of basketball, the football/soccer doodle was arguably the standout. With the player assuming the role of a goalie, the game’s objective is to block the ball. If your opponent scores three goals, it’s game over. In the spirit of an old school video game, this Easter egg is so straightforward, and yet so addictive… even if you’re not the biggest sports fan in the world.

For those that haven’t seen “Game of Thrones,” Hodor is a gentle giant who is tasked with carrying the crippled Bran Stark around. Living with a mental handicap, he’s only capable of saying one word: “Hodor.” Back when it came out, if you typed or spoke his name into a Google search engine, you’d receive a simple, yet epic, response. “Hodor” would be repeated over and over again, which basically sums up the character in a nutshell. If you look up “Google Space,” you might notice that the search screen is drifting apart. Don’t panic, your computer doesn’t have a virus. It’s merely a mind-bending Easter egg courtesy of Mr. Doob. This neat little trick makes it seem as if your web browser has been launched into outer space. The Google logo, the search box, and everything else are deprived of gravity, which allows them to float freely. Your mouse can even manipulate these weightless objects, making them bounce all over the place. It might not be the most productive use of your time, but this is the perfect distraction when you’re stuck in a boring office all day.

Thanks to the Internet, you can track down virtually any human being on the planet. That is, except for one particular martial artist. The World Wide Web is riddled with fun facts about Chuck Norris… and by “facts,” we mean “in-jokes.” This just might be the ultimate Chuck Norris gag, however. Back when it was working, when one typed, “Find Chuck Norris” into a Google search engine, the following message would appear: “Google won't search for Chuck Norris because it knows you don't find Chuck Norris, he finds you.” We can’t blame Google for being afraid of the all-American actor. After all, Mr. Norris has a fist behind his beard and he isn’t afraid to use it.

The meaning of the word, “Askew,” is to not be in a straight or level position. In other words, crooked, lopsided, or uneven. When you type “Askew” into Google, you’ll get much more than a definition. The entire web browser will be tilted from left to right, as if your screen is sinking. It’s like something out of a children’s joke book. No matter how old you are, though, we dare you not to smile at this clever Easter egg. You have to admit it’s more fun than rummaging through a dictionary.

Robert Moog was one of the most influential individuals in electronic music, inventing the Moog synthesizer. To honor his 78th birthday, Google Doodle put together a virtual synthesizer. Described by designer Ryan Germick as one of Google’s most ambitious doodles to date, this feature actually allowed users to record, play, and share their music with friends. The keyboard came complete with a mixer, oscillators, filter, and envelope to produce the sweetest sounds possible. Of course if you don’t know how to play piano, you can always tinker with the Google guitar, which was created to celebrate musician Les Paul's 96th Birthday.

Back in the ‘80s, you had to go to an arcade if you wanted to play “Pac-Man.” In this day and age, though, the classic Namco game is only a Google search away. To commemorate Pac-Man’s 30th anniversary, the Google logo was altered to resemble the original video game’s layout. Google went all-out with their first completely interactive doodle, which consists of 255 levels – diehards of the original know what happens at level 256! The "I'm Feeling Lucky" button was also revamped to read, "Insert Coin,” adding another level of authenticity. By clicking the button twice, Ms. Pac-Man can also join the game for double the fun.

Whenever you get into a tight spot in “Star Fox,” Peppy will remind you to stay calm and “Do a barrel roll.” This catchphrase has spawned countless memes, not to mention a kick-ass Google Easter egg. By typing the legendary quote into the search bar, the browser screen will do a total 360. Just as awesome, you’ll get the same result if you type the phrase, “z or r twice.” It’s as if the keyboard is your Nintendo 64 controller and Google is your Arwing. #1: Atari Breakout
Yet another ingenious video game reference, this Easter egg is a love letter to “Breakout,” the 1976 game from the good folks at Atari. By doing a Google Image search for “Atari Breakout,” all the images will assemble to recreate the classic arcade game. With several rows of colorful bricks stretched across the screen, a ball starts bouncing up and down. The objective is to use a paddle to prevent the ball from touching the bottom of the screen while also knocking out all the bricks. This Easter egg scores bonus points for not only recreating “Breakout” to a T, but also adding an extra layer of whimsy that has Google’s name written all over it. Do you agree with our list?
