For this list, we’ll be looking at anime that for a variety of reasons shunned by either the anime community or your parents who are watching over your shoulder. Regardless of their flaws we still find enjoyment in them… Not matter how embarrassing it may be to admit.
#10: “Prison School” (2015)
You know it, we know it, the only reason you’re watching this is for crude, outrageous comedy and a colossal amount of fanservice. However, unlike a lot of entries in its genre, this series fully embraces its more perverted side in a genius manner. Sure, a whole subplot about an incarcerated student accidentally watching a girl pee might not be at the height of storytelling, but in its own twisted way Prison School manages to make it all the more engrossing. Should you choose to give it a watch, it won’t be long before you see some voluptuous chests – so keep your bedroom door locked.
#9: “Elfen Lied” (2004)
Dismemberment, prejudice, traumatic pasts and the odd flash of boobs ensures that this series stands among some of anime’s darkest. These days everyone to takes shots at Lucy’s tale of murder and revenge for how much it overindulges on edginess, but at the end of the day what remains most potent about it is its broken protagonist and how she switches between monster and sympathetic figure on a moment’s notice. You have to sit through a lot of bloodbaths and watch a dog get beaten to death in order to get to the character development, but it’s uh…in there somewhere.

Given the amount of fanservice we receive in terms of anime gals, it’s only fair that we also get a series that chooses to focus on a group of young, athletically gifted young men who live to swim. Admit it, you’ve all watched it and kind of found it charming despite the fact it has got plenty of not-so-subtle moments between Haruka and the guys. All in all it’s a harmless show about some very decent guys who live for the sport and for each other is kind of infectious. We’re looking at you Makoto, you beautiful bastard.
#7: “Sword Art Online” (2012-14)

When it first game out, there’s no doubt this anime struck a chord with audiences. Not all of it positive. Some found great enjoyment in its dungeon crawler setting and admittedly OP, Gary Stu protagonist Kirito, as well as his romance with Asuna. Others found it so overly mainstream that it became borderline unbearable, and disliking it quickly became the latest craze. But you know what? For all its faults its still a pretty fun ride…Just don’t make any bold claims about how good it is.
#6: “Highschool of the Dead” (2010)
You didn’t come here for the zombies, don’t bother denying it. When the dead start feasting on the living, a group of students try to make their way through the city. They might 360-no-scope the occasional undead, but more often than not the ladies’ huge assets are on display. Saeko in particular stands out in this regard as she is so skilled in swordsmanship that her breasts can move in bullet time. There’s really no excuse for this anime being anything being intense fanservice presented as horror. Yet we still cannot bring ourselves to hate it.
#5: “Naruto” series (2002-)

Hold up folks, we’re not saying that this is a bad anime per se. In its glory days it was awesome. Unfortunately, a lot of that greatness gets mired down in the swamp known as filler episodes. In this day and age, Naruto is one of the most divisive anime series of all time – you either love it or you hate it. A lot of the time for those who hate it, it conjures up bad memories of wearing leaf headbands in family photos or running around the schoolyard with your arms flailing behind you. That’s your fault, not the anime.
#4: “Inuyasha” (2000-10)
Another classic that helped pioneer the fantasy side of anime, and…well like Naruto it suffers from a fair amount of the same problems. The extensive filler, the always monotonous ‘will-they-won’t-they” between Inuyasha and Kagome, and of course, those memories of your weebier days. However, despite these lingering problems resonating throughout the series, the tale of the half-dog demon remains a show that many anime fans grew up watching and will always hold a special place in their hearts, made all the better since the Final Act gave some much needed closure.
#3: “Hetalia” (2009-15)
As you might expect, this anthology of quickfire episodes featuring physical incarnations of countries brings every stereotype you can imagine to the forefront, but does it in such a satirical way that the show is actually rather sweet and quite funny on occasions. Where does the guilt come in? While the show itself is rather lighthearted, Hetalia has been drowned in controversy due to some of it’s more…obsessive fans. Known for their aggressive shipping of characters, your best bet is to make your own decision on whether you find the less than reliable historical accuracy of the show to be enjoyable. Just… don’t search it on tumblr or anything.
#2: “High School DxD” (2012-)

You won’t a find a single hint of subtleness in this series, so much so it’s kind of admirable just how in your face it is. We’re all good with devils, angels and dragons engaging in slugfests, but it’s kind of distracting when Rias is always throwing her BIG ASS TITTIES in an attempt to get it on with Issei. Throw in the fact that it soon evolves in a large harem with equally willing sexual participants and chances are you’re going to forget what the plot was. You may have a hard time convincing mom and dad or your roommate you weren’t watching porn but what the hell.
#1: “My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute” (2010-13)

Tell us if this plot sounds just a bit intriguing. Boy and girl seemingly have a broken and slightly abusive non-romantic relationship. Girl is secretly a huge otaku who pines for said boy despite the way she treats him. When boy discovers said secret their relationship starts to blossom with love on the horizon. Sounds like it could make for a solid anime, right? Well it would if the couple involved weren’t brother and sister! Come on anime we’ve talked about this. We can never recommend incest but …uh… it’s a pretty good show.
