Top 10 Mistakes That Were Left in Teen Movies

Top 10 Mistakes That Were Left in Teen Movies
VOICE OVER: Samantha Clinch WRITTEN BY: Jesse Singer
Even the teachers didn't notice these mistakes left in teen movies. Teenagers make plenty of mistakes, but for this list, we'll be looking at mistakes made by directors, editors, set designers and other crew on teen movies. Our countdown includes "Cruel Intentions," "Mean Girls," "She's All That," and more!

#10: The Missing Earring
“The Cheetah Girls” (2003)

Given all of the dancing and head jolting moves the group makes during their performance of “Girl Power,” we totally would’ve understood if one of the girls’ earrings just fell out. And, at first, when Kiely Williams’ character, Aqua, moves to the front for her solo, one might assume that is what happened, given that her right ear is missing a hoop. But then, only one cut later, she has both earrings on. Maybe the “Girl Power” The Cheetah Girls are singing about is the magical power to make items appear out of nowhere.

#9: The Short Hem
“Teen Beach Movie” (2013)

Filming multiple takes for anything in movies is super important, but it’s especially vital for big song and dance numbers. The downsides to having different angles, however, is that you’re bound to end up with some kind of continuity error. In “Teen Beach Movie,” it was the hem on Maia Mitchell’s shorts during the “Surf’s Up” number. Apparently, no one was paying attention to her small wardrobe mishap during one of the takes because from one shot to the next, the hem becomes noticeable. Watch as her shorts keep changing throughout the song.

#8: The Donut
“Mean Girls” (2004)

This 2004 film featured mean girls and magical donuts. Everyone obviously remembers the mean girls or, The Plastics, as they’re referred to. However, most of us never even noticed the moving donuts on Ms. Norbury’s desk. If you watch this scene closely, you’ll see that initially, Tina Fey’s desk has a closed box of donuts with nothing on it. As the scene continues, though, the box shifts so that the donuts, as well as a few papers, are laying on top of it. Cut back again and the donuts have made their return into the closed box. Magic!

#7: Wet/Dry Hair
“Descendants 2” (2017)

“Descendants 2” is a movie filled with beasts and witches, princesses and princes and, as it turns out, impossibly quick-drying hair. The movie’s big “You and Me” dance number takes place on a ship with a water-covered dance floor. The wet floor lends itself to some pretty awesome visuals and fun choreography. But, it also leads to a little oopsie that the filmmakers either didn’t notice or didn’t care to fix. With all the water on the ground being splashed around, it only makes sense that everyone’s clothes and hair would get wet, and Mal and Evie don’t avoid this fate once they hit the dance floor. However, check them out just a few moments later and they’re all dried up. Are there any spells for that?

#6: Taylor's Hair
“She's All That” (1999)

“She’s All That” begins with Zack finding out that his girlfriend Taylor cheated on him over spring break. It’s during this scene that Taylor’s hairstyle changes out of nowhere. You’ll notice that when Taylor starts her story, she has one hairstyle going, but then when they cut to the shot over Zack’s shoulder, all of a sudden she has a new look with more of her hair pulled back. If you watch the loose piece of hair on the left side of her face in the first shot, it’s a little easier to spot. Once we cut back to the bench, however, her first look has, of course, returned.

#5: Unzipped
“Teen Wolf” (1985)

Do you remember the end of “Teen Wolf” when Michael J. Fox makes the big free throw to win the game and get the girl? For most of us, that’s how we’ve always remembered the final moments of this iconic 80s movie. However, what many of us missed is the extra with only their legs visible. They’re standing right behind Fox’s character, Scott, and his dad, who are busy celebrating the win. Watch as the person realizes that their fly is undone, stops cheering, and scrambles to zip up. It’s so out of place, you’ll wonder how you never noticed it before.

#4: The Paintball Marks
“10 Things I Hate About You” (1999)

If you decide to have a paintball scene in your movie and you aren’t filming the whole thing in one continuous shot, then you’re pretty much begging for some continuity mishaps…which is exactly what happened in “10 Things I Hate About You.” And, while the film is a romantic comedy, we’re going to assume they wanted the paintball scene to be a little more romantic than comedic. Unfortunately, the way Patrick and Kat’s jumpsuits go from having a little paint to full-on Jackson Pollock is jarringly laughable. Jump to the end of the scene and their suits have self-cleaned a bit–that is until we cut to the close-up just before their kiss and, all of a sudden, the whole paint mess is back.

#3: Cecile's Hair Clip
“Cruel Intentions” (1999)

We’re pretty sure no one was paying attention to Cecile’s hair clip during the now-famous lesbian kiss scene in 1999’s “Cruel Intentions.” The scene is one of the most talked-about kisses in teen movie history, but the hair clip doesn’t generally come up in that conversation. Still, if you do focus your attention on Cecile’s green snap clip, you’ll catch some obvious continuity mistakes. It would appear that the scene was filmed a few times and, while Cecile’s hair clip is fully visible in some shots, in others it’s almost all covered up by her hair.

#2: The Rearview Mirror
“Ferris Bueller's Day Off” (1986)

Near the end of “Ferris Bueller's Day Off,” Ferris’ sister, Jeannie, runs into her brother with the car. Once she realizes it’s him, she races home in the hopes of proving to her mom that Ferris was faking his illness. When Jeannie almost hits her brother, we can clearly see that there’s a rearview mirror in the car. “Of course, there is,” you say. The issue here is that, when Jeannie peels away, it’s gone! Cut to a driveby shot and it’s back again. The mirror isn’t blocking a shot, so there doesn’t seem to be any reason to remove it. And yet, they did, but only for a couple of shots. Very strange!

#1: The Side Mirror
“Clueless” (1995)

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we had cars that could self-repair? Just like Cher’s Jeep in “Clueless.” What? You don’t remember the regenerating car of the future? Well, just watch the driving test scene. Cher sideswipes a parked car and, in doing so, knocks her passenger side mirror right off. But, just a few seconds later, when she pulls over, OMG! The car is as good as new, passenger side mirror included. Speaking of disappearing and reappearing, have you ever paid attention to Dionne’s nose ring in the driving scene with Cher? You can see her get into the car with a nose ring, then moments later, she’s without it. Then next time she turns around, voila, it’s back again!
