Top 10 Most Absurd Anime Hairstyles

“Gosick” (2011)
Our first entry proves that unicorns actually exist. No wait, its just a police detective with outrageous hair. A rather flamboyant aristocrat turned detective, Gevil de Blois isn’t so great at his job, with most of his cases being solved by series protagonist Victorique. Gevil’s most standout feature is his blonde drill-like hair, which is all thanks to the demands of Victorique. This one really breaks the heart, because his old look was pretty slick – get it together Grevil.

“Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure” (2012-)
If you are going to be a standout of the series, you are going to need that signature style. Grandson of “Battle Tendency” hero, Joseph Joestar and the protagonist of “Stardust Crusaders”, Jotaro sports a more traditional looking style, unlike our previous entry. Short and black with plenty of- Oh my god, where does his hat end and his hair begin? While we could give this spot to any number of characters in the Jojo cast, such as the silver haired fox, Jean Pierre Polnareff, we can’t seem to get our heads around Jotaro’s hat-head.

“Ladies vs Butlers” (2010)
Time to bust out the twin-tails. It’s a look you’ve seen countless times in anime, but none do it quite so well as Selnia. Born into the world of glitz and glamour, Selenia is the little “Miss perfect” everyone would think she is...except she has a strange quirk – Her hair freaking moves! These two blonde drill-like pigtails can actually manipulate their size and density depending on her mood. The point is driven home by the actual drill noises they make when she is frustrated. I guess it’s understandable why she fusses over her hair so much?

“Toriko” (2011-14)
If Guy Fieri has taught us anything, it’s that you can get away with any hairstyle if you’re big in the gourmet food community. Sunny is no exception. Recognized along with series protagonist Toriko as one of the “Four Heavenly Kings” for his achievements in the world of gourmet food, Sunny decides to incorporate a rather unique style into his appearance. But these flowing locks aren’t just for show, Sunny is able to deal out destruction by manipulating them. Oh and the less said about his “satan hair” ability, the better.

“Inazuma Eleven” (2008-11)
Just because you are not the main character of your series doesn’t mean you can’t have the weirdest hair. A defender for the Inazuma Japan soccer team, Tobitaka prides himself in his customized hairstyle. Tobitaka’s obsession with his hair has led to him creating the perfect hybrid of Pompadour and mullet. Incredible. Though we may not know how much gel it takes to keep in place, one thing is for sure, it takes a lot of combing.

“Shiki” (2010)
When you dive head first into an anime filled with death and macabre, the last thing you expect is these wonky ‘dos. Honestly, in a show with this many outlandish hairstyles, you’d probably get some funny looks if you were sporting a crew-cut.
Worst of all these styles is likely, Kyouko Ozaki who plays the part of the well-mannered wife rather well - even though she struggles through a loveless marriage. We hate to say it but it’s honestly pretty difficult to take torture seriously when she has that on her head... We almost gave this spot to the sociopathic Seishirou Kirishiki but Kyouko’s look is like nothing we’ve seen before.

“Dragon Ball Z” (1989-96)
Since we are talking about hair, we couldn’t leave out our favorite super Saiyan. Leader of the Z-Fighters and essentially the defender of Earth, Goku already has some pretty out-there hair to begin with. But after goku’s earth shattering yelling we are presented with…a golden super-mullet. If that wasn’t enough, he loses his eyebrows in the process.
At this point, we are pretty sure the more ridiculous hair you have, the more power you have at your disposal. Sorry Krillin, but you can’t compete with dat flow.

“One Piece” (1999-)
Franky has engineered his body to perfection – and his doo is no exception. Though he originally hit the scene sporting a pretty radical pompadour, this buff cyborg has never settled ever since – sporting anything from pigtails to buzz cuts. But that’s where the standard styles end.
Glorious wings? Yup. Stag beetle mandibles? Uh-huh. A giant canon? Absolutely.
Everything Franky does, he does in style – who knows what he’ll come up with next…

“Bobobo-bo Bo-Bobo” (2003-05)
Speaking of hair manipulators, an anime hair list wouldn’t be the same with the great Bo-bobo. A tremendous muscleman and protagonist of the series, Bobobo fights the forces of evil with nose hair that he can control on a whim. Yes...his nose hair. Despite this, it actually isn’t his weirdest feature. Bo-bobo sports a blone afro, which is apparently made of 24 karat gold. This glorious afro is a host to all things weird…including a couple squirrels that live in there.

Let’s roll out the red carpet for the King of Games and bad hairstyles. A teenager that is just a tad too good at card games, Yugi posesses an ancient Egyptian puzzle that houses the spirit of the Egyptian Pharoah, Atem. Sound ridiculous? We know. To add on top of it all, is Yugi’s hair. With gravity-defying purple, black, and yellow locks, Yugi helped create the “over-the-top protagonist hairstyle” trope that is now commonplace. This trend later continues with the protagonists of spin-off series “5D’s”, Yusei Fudou, and “Zexal” Yuma Tsukumo in what can only be understood as awful-haircut one-ups-manship. Never change, Yugioh series.
