Top 10 Anticipated Anime of Winter 2018

Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Most Anticipated Anime for Winter 2023. For this list, we’ll be looking at the biggest titles coming to the scene this chilly season. What anime are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments!

#10: “Trigun: Stampede” (2023-)

3D anime can be a tough sell, even when they aren’t adapting beloved properties. But, “Trigun: Stampede” looks to be a shining example of how to do it right. Since the original 1998 series still totally holds up, this new version is pitched as less of a remake and more of a retelling. In that context, the spectacular CG animation succeeds at making sure “Stampede” feels distinct from what came before. All that aside, though, this is just another reason to revisit one of anime’s most empowering stories. And, if the early buzz is any indication, the bounty on Vash’s head has only gotten bigger over the years.

#9: “Record of Ragnarok” (2021-) Season 2

It’s hard to top the sheer epicness of Gods versus mortals duking it out for the fate of humanity. But, what’s even better is that “Record of Ragnarok” is still just getting started. There’s plenty of bloody, earth-shattering fights left in this tournament, and each of them is bound to be more absurdly awesome than the last. After all, there may not be another show ever that promises a duel between Hercules and Jack the Ripper. If season two can deliver on even half of that potential, then it’s bound to be a literal bloody good time. Either way, this is not going to be a match to miss.

#8: “Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense” (2020-) Season 2

As every anime fan knows, if you die in the game, you die in real life. “NewWorld Online” isn’t quite that lethal, but Maple wouldn’t need to worry about it, anyways. She’s pooled all her stat upgrades into defense, leaving her an invincible, powerless unit on the battlefield. Along the way, her armor deflected all cliches, expectations, and ridicule thrown at it. As a result, “Bofuri” emerged as a total charmer in 2020. Now back for its sophomore season, there’s no reason to believe that Maple’s iron-clad defense won’t hold up for another round. As they say, a good defense is also a good offense.

#7: “Tomo-chan Is a Girl!” (2023-)

It’s no easy feat to compete with 2022’s deep slate of charming slice-of-life anime. But, 2023 is offering up a worthy contender right off the bat. Enter: “Tomo-chan Is a Girl!”, a lovingly written reverse rom-com about a girl bucking gender norms and finding true love. Except, that’s all much easier said than done, especially since Tomo is considered “one of the boys,” for better, and for worse. Whether or not she can navigate the dreaded friend zone, it’s already clear that this heartfelt premise has all the makings of yet another smash hit. Plus, it’s coming at just the right time to satiate any rom-com withdrawals from 2022’s excellent lineup.

#6: “Nier: Automata Ver1.1a” (2023-)

Most of the time, video game adaptations are to be approached with caution. But, there’s no such thing as bad press. So, from equal parts trepidation and excitement, the “Nier” anime has become one of the most talked-about titles of the Winter season. On paper, the source material definitely has a dense enough story to buoy a whole anime. The question will be if they can somehow pare down its sprawling lore into a satisfying storyline. Not to mention its multiple endings, too. Either way, it’s destined to keep fans watching. Only time will tell if that’s for a good reason or not.

#5: “Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro” (2021-) Season 2

There’s nothing “sus” about it, Hachiouji and Nagatoro are officially back in class. In their first go-around, they learned all about lewd jokes, heartfelt character growth, and how to become an instant anime meme. There’s no telling if this sequel will replicate the same frenzied discussion of the original run. But, it doesn’t have to. The groundwork of the first season means there’s already an eager audience waiting for more inappropriate hijinks. So, even if it doesn’t break the internet all over again, “Miss Nagatoro”’s unique brand of humor will surely earn it a good grade with audiences. And, if it’s lucky, maybe it’ll spawn a few new memes, too.

#4: “The Misfit of Demon King Academy” (2020-) Season 2

Sure, Anos may stick out a little bit, but his show is anything but a misfit. Rather, the novel blend of drama and wit feels right at home within the modern anime landscape. Fans agree, too, since the first season ended with some magical results. But, this time around, two is the magic word. It’s the second season, with twice the amount of episodes, and hopefully twice the fun, too. The introduction of the new “Child of God” to both rival and teach Anos is a promising start. With all that, “The Misfit of Demon King Academy” has all the necessary ingredients for a downright spellbinding second season.

#3: “Bungo Stray Dogs” (2016-) Season 4

Four seasons deep, and Atsushi and the others are finally looking to the past to find a greater appreciation for the future. The season promises to divulge the origins of the Armed Detective Agency - and, if the previous arcs are anything to go by, it will do it with plenty of heart, style, and attitude. It’s a damn good hook for the new season, not that “Bungo Stray Dogs” needed it to get people talking. After seven years as one of the most entertainingly offbeat shows around, fans have been barking as loud as actual dogs for more. So, despite the agency’s best efforts, there’s no way this new season will go undercover.

#2: “Tokyo Revengers” (2021-) Season 2

Another holiday, another season, and another reason to watch Takemichi leap through time. He made it out of Bloody Halloween well enough, but this time around, “Tokyo Revengers” is embracing some of that holly, jolly spirit. At least, as much as the Tokyo Manji Gang can stomach. The Christmas backdrop is a bold direction for the series to take, especially since it could have easily coasted by on the merits of its time-traveling premise. But, “Tokyo Revengers” has never been one to shy away from its ambitions. So, if it can live up to the explosive hype, it won’t just match season one, it might even surpass it.

#1: “Vinland Saga” (2019-) Season 2

There’s not many show’s out there that get to build off of a near-flawless first season. Then again, there’s not many shows like “Vinland Saga,” period. The show is still pretty new, but the strength of its inaugural run has practically made this follow-up the must-see event of the season. In fact, it’s probably one of the hottest titles dropping this whole year. Mostly because there’s an endless number of the places the story could take Thorfinn’s journey next. But, even amid all the theories and possibilities, one thing is for certain: “Vinland Saga” is making a grand return like it never even left.
