Top 10 Most Iconic Movie Makeover Montages

Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the most entertaining, inventive, and/or iconic makeover sequences.
#10: Toula’s New Job
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” (2002)
In this modern classic, Toula Portokalos finds herself at a dead end working for her family. She then becomes inspired to go to college, get a makeover, and find a purpose. This upbeat montage charts the heroine’s journey to a more glamorous life. Putting on makeup and popping in contacts, the main character asserts herself in some relatable moments. Nia Vardalos plays the role with a grounded energy. Through each and every change, we feel for the protagonist as she develops more self-esteem and puts herself out there. This sequence means even more when she finds love.
#9: Trying on Dresses
“Priscilla” (2023)
For Sofia Coppola’s film, the perspective shifts from the King of Rock to his young love interest. This sequence illustrates both the title character’s naivete and her partner’s hold over her. Trying on various dresses, the lead looks for her identity in the midst of being controlled. The scene features some subtle explorations of the larger relationship. In just a few looks, you come to realize how both sides interact with each other. “Priscilla” makes these kinds of moments into important showcases of complicated partnership. With Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi’s compelling work, there’s an added impact to this makeover.
#8: Freshening Up
“Encino Man” (1992)
Naturally, an unfrozen caveman might need a bath. Dave and Stoney do their friend a solid with a complete makeover. Mixing together all kinds of chemicals, the friends create a ridiculous concoction to help the new guy. Brendan Fraser’s Link endures the most thorough clean you can imagine. The guest also doesn’t mind drinking anything, prompting a funny gag with some after shave. Fraser’s character ends up looking much better after a chaotic and almost-toxic transformation. Despite the inexperience of the two helpers, the end result actually works. Maybe the two leads could’ve started their own clean-up service.
#7: Valerie’s Musical Number
“Earth Girls Are Easy” (1988)
When Valerie Gail needs a makeover, her friend Candy Pink has the answer. They embark on a complicated song and dance number to get the job done. As Gail becomes a brand new woman, she’s treated to a more lively sequence than anyone might’ve expected. The main character is completely taken care of along with a catchy song. With bright colors and a fun routine, this scene stands out for its zany details. Gail comes to embrace the changes as she becomes more inspired. “Earth Girls Are Easy” finds a way to make this cliche all the more entertaining, with the music only enhancing the film.
#6: Loretta’s New Hair
“Moonstruck” (1987)
Cher plays the heroine Loretta Castorini in “Moonstruck,” but she starts out as the furthest thing from a pop star. She later meets Nicolas Cage’s wild character Ronny Cammareri and starts to fall in love. This prompts a serious makeover, including a major hair change. It’s a positive transformation for a woman that’s looking for a second act. She ends up with an incredible glow-up, including a fancy dress and some awesome shoes. When you finally see her outside the opera, you understand why her date looks stunned. The performer only has to walk into a scene to wow the viewer.
#5: Going Shopping
“Pretty Woman” (1990)
Edward Lewis needs a date, so he hires an escort named Vivian Ward. His wealthy tastes allow for Ward to go on a shopping spree. Bubbly and free, Julia Roberts gives her character an extra spark here. Her iconic performance makes every moment sing without the need for dialogue. You might even want to jump through the screen, sitting beside her as she gets pizza and picks out clothes. We’ve all wondered what it might be like to have unlimited credit and a chance at revenge. There’s also the music cue from Roy Orbison, rounding out this enjoyable montage. These kinds of fun sequences remind you that this is a certified classic.
#4: Becoming All That
“She’s All That” (1999)
We’re not the only ones wondering why she needed a makeover. Rachel Leigh Cook’s Laney Boggs receives a few pointers from the main jock’s sister Mack. While athletes clean the Boggs’ house, Zack Siler waits for his date to emerge. Little does he know just how stunning she’ll be. You could make fun of this sequence, but it’s still effective. The glasses go and hair changes, but Cook’s character seems to have a little more confidence. Siler sees a completely new person after the small, but impactful alterations. “She’s All That” might be a self-parody at some points, but you can’t deny the greatness of the song “Kiss Me.”
#3: Royal Makeover
“The Princess Diaries” (2001)
Mia Thermopolis learns she’s royalty, prompting her grandmother Clarisse to give her a makeover. Beautician Paolo arrives to turn heads and crack wise. Full of hilarious dialogue, Larry Miller’s character comes face to face with a serious challenge. His tools even break down under the pressure of the lead’s hair. In a star making role, Anne Hathaway gives the sequence her own charm as she reacts to each change. All of the laughs lead up to a satisfying reveal. After eyebrow tweezing and pedicures, Thermopolis looks ready for the royal ball. “The Princess Diaries” outdoes itself in one of its most rewatchable sections.
#2: Walking in a Woman’s Shoes
“Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993)
Taking an unorthodox approach, Daniel Hillard figures out a way to be with his kids. He then needs his brother’s help to make a disguise. This leads to yet another great showcase for Robin Williams. The makeover lets the comedian do different voices, with makeup and outfits changing his personality. Each passing character could power its own film. Williams lets his vocal talents run wild, with salutes to musicals like “Fiddler on the Roof.” There’s even a funny tribute to the work of Barbra Streisand. This sequence from “Mrs. Doubtfire” reminds you of how hilarious the star can be, while also utilizing some impressive prosthetics.

With Michael Caine’s expert leading the way, the normal Gracie Hart becomes the fabulous Gracie Lou Freebush. This includes all kinds of painful and intensive treatments. Always fun to watch, Bullock plays the moments to comedy perfection. You both laugh and feel for the heroine as she endures it all for her profession.
