Top 10 Most Insane Anime Cliffhangers
VOICE OVER: Ashley Bowman WRITTEN BY: Alex Crilly-Mckean
You can't just end things here! Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we are counting down our picks for the Top 10 Most Insane Anime Cliffhangers.

For this list, we'll be looking at the anime conclusions that left plenty of loose ends. Whether they were leaving things open to interpretation or simply whetting the appetites of fans for the next season, in their own special way these endings were nothing short of brutal.

#10: “The Promised Neverland” (2019)

We were borderline jubilated when we saw Emma and most of the children finally, and we mean FINALLY, escape their abattoir of a home. Thanks to Norman’s last piece of ingenuity and Emma’s belief in the rest of the kids, they managed to outwit the Isabella and her demonic superiors and made a break for freedom. That of course left us with the question of…what now? What is beyond the woods? What is the true state of the world? What is Isabella’s ultimate fate? At least we only have to wait until next year to find out.

#9: “Highschool of the Dead” (2010)

Look, we all know what we sighed up for. Legions of undead getting shot to pieces by high school students who for some reason really can’t seem to keep it in their pants, even in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. It truly is the best kind of trash. So you can’t just tease us with the image of the gang gearing up to face the horde atop a tank and not expect us to be frothing at the mouth for more! What other kind of crazy scenarios are they going to get into? Will Kohta pull a 360 no scope? Will Takashi truly end up with any girl within the group? We’ll never know.

#8: “Aldnoah.Zero” (2014-15)

It’s your typical Gen Urobuchi conclusion, with bloodshed, tragedy and awkward love triangles in abundance. On opposite sides of the war yet both vying for Princess Asseylum, Inaho and Slaine’s rivalry already had tensions already high. Of course, things go full Urobutcher when Slaine’s foster father shows up and pops a cap in the princess’ cranium. As you can guess, grief and hormones are a recipe for disaster, leading to everyone firing at each other in a moment of madness, leaving both Asseylum and Inaho down for the count. Not sure what’s worse, imagining the show not getting a continuation…or knowing what we actually got in Season Two.

#7: “The Heroic Legend of Arslan: Dust Storm Dance” (2016)

One could make the argument that this entire sequel season is nothing but a giant tease. By all means give us more of the boy who would be king, give us awesome side characters hopping from kingdom to kingdom, battling it out to strengthen their influence. Just please don’t cut the whole thing off before the final battle sequence. At eight episodes in length, all Arslan manages to accomplish in this little outing is get us hyped for the upcoming clash of ancient factions…that we’ll probably never get to see.

#6: “Medabots” (1999-2000)

There’s an unwritten rule when It comes to tournament arcs - never skip out on the final battle. Unfortunately, Medabee likes to go against the rules. After managing to defeat the Rubber Robo Gang’s pint-sized robot/alien boss, or something, it looks like the finale is back on, with Medabee set to have a rematch with Warbandit to see who takes the crown. Should be a fun time! Alas, we don’t even see then trade a punch, since the series decided the best thing to do would be to end it there with a good ol’ freeze frame.

#5: “Attack on Titan” (2013-)

Well that’s one way to send your fans into a frenzy. On the cusp of what promised to be a hellish confrontation between the Survey Corp and the conniving Beast Titan, the series managed to keep layering on the awesomeness by the time its climactic halfway point rolled around. Reiner and Bertholdt have returned to settle the score, Eren and company are about to set off on an expedition to the town where it all began, and thanks to that little stringer at the end, we know that things do not go according to plan…

#4: “The Big O” (1999-2003)

An enthralling mystery paired with some of the most intricately designed mecha ever put to animation? No wonder this neo-noir was a runaway hit. It had so much going for it that a second season was inevitable. Roger Smith’s ongoing investigation into a city without memories along with his confrontation with other Megadeus Pilots had us hooked from start to finish…so why in the name of Big Duo’s floating happy sack did you wait so long to make a second season?! You don’t just show three mysterious approaching Megadeuses in the distance and call it quits!

#3: “Sword Art Online: Alicization” (2018-19)

Just when you thought there was light at the end of the tunnel for our overpowered boy Kirito. After Eugeo sacrifices himself in order to help defeat the Administrator, things go from bad to worse pretty quickly once Kirito contacts the outside world. It’s soon revealed that the facility housing his body is under attack from unknown forces and that they’re about to sever the main power line. Before he even has time to even react, a large surge strikes Kirito, leaving us wondering how the heck he’s gonna get out of this one!

#2: “Berserk” (1997-98)

Nothing encompasses complete hopelessness more than watching Guts scream at his former best friend who sacrificed all of his comrades in order to become a demon god, who then proceeds to violate the love of Guts’ life just to spite him. Keep in mind this is after Guts cut off his own arm with a blunt sword and got his eye gouged out by apostles. Yeah, most edgy anime wish they could get this bleak. While deep down we all know that Guts managed to live to fight another day, the fact the original series ended on such a horrifying note was still a lot more than many could bear.

#1: “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion” (2006-07)

There are dramatic reveals, and then there’s this. While R2 managed to continue the web of deceit and sci-fi extravagance set up in this modern masterpiece, it had a lot to live up thanks this iconic confrontation. Starting off as the best of buds, Lelouch and Suzaku’s opposing ideologies eventually led them to face off at gunpoint…plus the fact that the former had inadvertently killed the latter’s love interest. This accompanied by Suzaku and Kalen’s reactions to Zero being unmasked made the whole thing the epitome of tense. Admit it, when that first shot went off, you stopped breathing.
