If we told you this flume ride sends its riders down a mere 53-foot drop, we’d forgive you for questioning how it nabbed a spot on this list. But don’t judge a book by its cover. Or better yet, DO judge this book by its cover, because Brainwash is all about the visuals. This slide sends riders through a dome where they’re bombarded with stimulation: flashing lights, all manner of colors and trippy sounds. More than a ride down a slide, Brainwash is a sensory journey. But sadly… you’ll have to enjoy the view from your computer screen, as Wet n’ Wild Water Park closed on December 13, 2016.

The winner of 2013’s Best Water Ride at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Awards, Dawwama is found in Abu Dhabi. And while Dubai may be the most talked about city in the United Arab Emirates, as fans saw in “Furious Seven,” Abu Dhabi has a lot to offer. The 6-person raft ride sends riders down some nice slopes, delivering a roller coaster-like attraction, before sending them up the walls of a massive 65-foot high funnel. Riders twist their way back and forth through the huge funnel before they’re finally spit out.

Remember our warning about selectively judging books by their covers? Well, apply the same logic here. Like Brainwash, this single-person slide is only 60 feet high, so it’s not particularly intimidating at first glance, but you’ll wanna take a second look, because this slide has a very unique, frightening feature. It sends its riders through a tunnel of clear glass that just so happens to be surrounded by a shark-filled lagoon. The brave souls who tackle the Leap of Faith are quite literally taking it on faith that nothing will go wrong and they’ll be safe from the many sharks swimming just a few feet away.

Simple data can explain the awesomeness of this ride. Standing at a whopping 14 stories high, this drop plummets riders down to the bottom in just 5 seconds time. Insano is most definitely appropriately named; riders have been clocked at speeds of up to 65 miles per hour. Oh and then there’s the fact that this attraction previously held the Guinness World Record for tallest water slide in the world at 135 feet tall. So... if you have the courage to take this massive plunge, maybe take a moment to soak in the view from the top, because who knows if you’ll ever be that brave again.

King Cobra seems to have it all. For one thing, it’s visually stunning. Standing five stories high, King Cobra is a red, white, and black painted slithering masterpiece that culminates in a beautiful Cobra head finish, complete with water spurting fangs. Then there’s the ride itself, which pits two pairs of riders side by side on tubes to race each other to the finish line. Varying between closed and open spaces, the riders can reach up to 32 mph before they’re dumped down a 25-foot drop at a sharp 50-degree angle into the cobra’s mouth.

Blizzard Beach was one of Disney World’s ventures into the water park world, and they did not disappoint with their cornerstone attraction. Nobody would be blamed for shaking or even letting loose some tears while standing atop this gigantic free fall slide. If you can stomach the vertigo, the view from so high is quite beautiful, giving riders a wide panorama of the magical Disney landscape. Those who dare partake are rocketed down a near vertical 120-foot slope in an instant. Known to carry riders at speeds up to 60 miles per hour, the Summit Plummet is not for the faint of heart.

The Behemoth Bowl is the definition of go big or go home. The designers at ProSlideTechnology boast that the “Behemoth Bowl 60” is largest bowl ride in the world, with a 60-foot diameter. Using a variety of patented technologies, it’s a unique ride, that thankfully, you can find at a variety of parks around the world, including the Chimelong Water Park in China and Six Flags White Water in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. While riders and experts alike are impressed with the speed these big tubes can reach, we’re most impressed with the sheer size of the whole thing. Big tubes, big drops, and a crazy big bowl means big fun.

The land of the Sound of Music certainly earned its place on our list with this absolutely incredible ride. L2 is a groundbreaking ride in the world of water attractions. With more physical obstacles than roller coasters, there are some feats believed impossible for water ride attractions. L2 defies one of those previously thought impossibilities: the double loop. First launching riders on a freefall through its tubes at speeds up to 40 miles per hour, L2 then sends riders up and over not one, but two loops. Other slides have since duplicated the feat, but L2 was the first.

It’s amazing what you can do in a mere five to seven seconds. Take, for example, the Scorpion’s Tail. To start, the lone rider has to suffer through a terrifying wait for the floor to be dropped out from underneath them, sending them on their terrified way. Then, in just five to seven seconds, that brave soul plunges through a clear capsule at a 60-degree angle before covering a massive 400-foot loop. Only then, once the rider’s heart rate has jumped through the roof, do they splash to a halt.

This ride certainly had the “insane” part down. When operated correctly, Verruckt was the definition of thrilling. At 168 feet and 7 inches tall, it was the tallest slide in the world. What’s even more impressive is that Verruckt wasn’t a solo freefall, but rather a raft ride - meaning that with the combined weight of the raft riders, the vehicle reached some pretty intense speeds. Unfortunately, the crucial role of the rider’s weight seemingly proved to be its undoing. In 2016, 10-year-old Caleb Schwab received a fatal neck injury riding in the front seat. In the wake of Schwab’s death, Verruckt was permanently shut down.
