Top 20 Most Powerful Video Game Characters

They are walking extinction events. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we are counting down our picks for the top ten most powerful video game characters. For this list, we’ll be looking at the strongest heroes and villains in all of gaming. We’ll only be counting one character per franchise, however characters that originated in comic books and anime won’t be included, so don’t expect Superman or Goku to show up. Also be on the lookout for a few spoilers down the line!

#10: Sephiroth “Final Fantasy VII” (1997)

Also in:

Sephiroth's Villain Origins | Final Fantasy VII

Trust us, he is not wielding that sword because he’s compensating for anything. Formally the most skilled member of SOLDIER and hailed as a hero, after he discovered his connection to the extraterritorial lifeform known as Jenova, the One Winged Angel decided to carry out his perceived destiny by taking control the planet. Aside from just looking badass, he’s responsible for one of gaming’s most shocking moments in which he murdered Aerith, as well as one hell of a boss fight. As Safer Sephiroth, he’s ultimate technique literally involves sending the sun into the player. We still have no idea how Cloud and company survived that one.

#9: Oni “Super Street Fighter IV” (2010)

Also in:

Top 10 Most Powerful Fighting Game Characters

No one can deny that Akuma was one tough customer. With his mastery of Satsui no Hado, devastating Ultra Combos and lack of empathy, he was a vicious fighter in his own right. Well say hello to his superior form. As a secret boss, you’ll have to actively seek him out in order to test your fighting chops, but rest assured its one hell of a challenge. Possessing stronger versions of all of Akuma’s techniques, as well as even less humanity (if that’s even possible) this is the closest a Street Fighter character actually achieving godhood. Who else do you know that works out by triggering an active volcano?

#8: The Apprentice “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed” series (2008-10)

Also in:

The 10 Most Powerful Lego Video Game Characters

Also known as Starkiller and Galen Marek, this student of Darth Vader is so well-adapt in the ways of the force that he brought down a Star Destroyer right out of the sky. Tasked with hunting down and slaying Jedi, he eventually comes into conflict with his former master, torn between both the dark side and the light. He can not only go lightsabre to lightsabre with both Vader and Emperor Palpatine , but should the players go full on Sith in the game’s expansion, he’s even strong enough to kill Obi Won Kenobi, twice! Makes you wonder how Rey and Finn would cope against this guy.

#7: Alex Mercer “Prototype” series (2009-12)

Behold the one-man Swiss army knife! After being infected with the Blacklight virus, this former researcher seeks out to recover his lost memories while cleaving his way through anyone who gets in his way. Mercer has more powers than we’d know what to with! Able to shapeshift into anyone he comes into contact with, superhuman strength, endurance and a rapid healing factor, not to mention turning his ligaments in claws, giant fists and an abundance of tendrils. He’s so strong that it only made sense to turn him into the villain in the sequel. Which he did pretty well since his first evil deed involved turning himself into patient zero and unleashing a city wide pandemic.

#6: Bayonetta “Bayonetta” series (2009-)

Also in:

Why Bayonetta 2 is the Best Hack and Slash Game Ever

You don’t mess with a witch. Bayonetta is one of modern gaming’s most kickass female characters, battling the forces of heaven and hell with sass, sensuality and a whole lot of bullets. As the Left Eye of the World, her power is astounding. Whether she’s using a whole mesh of angel-killing weaponry such as her signature firearms, slowing down time whenever she pleases, or summoning demonic entities out of her hair. She may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but when it comes to battling evil in its most holy and unholy forms, there’s no one better suited for the job. She did throw a satellite like it was a Frisbee, and punch God into the sun.

#5: Mewtwo “Pokemon” series (1996-)

Before there over seven hundred Pokemon, there was only one that every aspiring trainer wanted to own. After defeating the Elite Four and Pokemon Champion, your prize lay hidden at the end of Cerulean Cave, where you came face to face with the ultimate Psychic-type. Able to learn the majority of moves in the games, he was artificially cloned from the powerful yet playful Mew, and designed to be the most powerful Pokemon in existence! And since his debut this vicious clone has always been the powerhouse of the Pokemon franchise. Although Arceus temporarily took his crown as the most powerful Pokemon in Diamond and Pearl, Mewtwo gained it back with his Mega forms in X and Y.

#4: Kratos “God of War” series (2005-)

Also in:

15 Greek Gods Kratos DIDN'T Actually Kill In God Of War

It doesn’t matter whether you are a man, God, Titan or some other beast of Greek Mythology, Kratos will beat you into a bloodstain all the same. After being tricked into killing his family, he took on the God of War, Ares, in order to seek revenge. After being betrayed by Zeus, he killed his way up Mount Olympus and slayed each of the Gods one by one. You starting to see a pattern here? With his arsenal of mythical weapons and hunger for vengeance, not even monstrosities like Cronos can stand a chance against this Spartan. Heck, he’s so strong he stabbed himself with the Blade of Olympus and all it did was give him a beard.

#3: Dante “Devil May Cry” series (2001-15)

Also in:

Devil May Cry: Dante's Origin

Son of a legendary demon who rebelled against its own hellish origins, Dante has quite the pedigree when it comes to demon slaying. Throw in a passion for pizza, rock music and zero fear of things that go bump in the night and you have the cockiest bastard to ever take up arms against the forces of evil, and we love him for it. His heritage grants him incredible strength, reflexes and endurance to the point where he can walk off being impaled. His sword skills and talent in gun-slinging are unparalleled, and that’s not even counting the sheer amount of Devil Arms he has at his disposal. Oh, and mad guitar skills. Show-off.

#2: Kirby “Kirby” series (1992-)

Also in:

The 10 BEST Kirby Games

Now you might be wondering how such a cute marshmallow could be more powerful than all those previously mentioned. Even if you disregard the fact he can absorb and copy all the powers of enemies he swallows, these are some of the feats he has accomplished in his regular, squishy form. He fought the infamous Dark Nebula inside of a Black Hole. He defeated Marx Soul, a villain equipped with a wish-granting, reality warping crown. He best both Master Hand and Crazy Hand, the creator and destroyer of the entire universe. Then he went on to defeat Dark Mind, the creature born from both Hands and made them look like mere gloves, in the same game! Yep, Kirby is beast! Before we reveal our number one pick, here are a few honourable mentions. Master Chief “Halo” series (2001-15) Shao Kahn “Mortal Kombat” series (1992-) Albert Wesker “Resident Evil” series (1996-) Shadow the Hedgehog “Sonic the Hedgehog” series (1991-) Maxwell “Scribblenauts” (2009)

#1: Asura “Asura’s Wrath” (2012)

When the finale of a game has the protagonist breaking their way through multiple planets and suns in order to beat the crap out of the creator of all things, you have officially earned your status as video game’s strongest character. After betrayed, renounced of his divinity and having his daughter kidnapped, Asura quite literally declares war on everyone and punches his way to victory. Demons, deities, a fleet of spaceships, the Earth’s core, a gigantic space station shaped like a monk, and yes, even the Gods’ God, all fall victim to the rage of a man who had his loved ones stolen from him. You can’t really compete with someone who can knock his way through the whole universe. Do you agree with our list? Which video game character do you think is the most powerful?
