Top 10 Most Quotable Movies

Top 10 Most Quotable Movies
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
Script written by Niki Neptune.

Quoting movies may not be the most original thing in the world, but it sure is fun. In this video, http://www.WatchMojo.com counts down our picks for the top 10 most quotable movies. For this list, we're looking at films that have some of the most entertaining, the most memorable, or the most classic lines in modern movie history. These are the movies you find yourself quoting without even realizing it. And while some of us may just remember a line here or there, it's entirely possible to have the entire scripts of some of the movies stuck in your head, whether you like it or not.

Special thanks to our users Malcolm Lim, Sjdillon10, Tyro533, Keegan Burton, ReaderGamerSinger, MultiPearl007, Alysia Victoria Parker, FireMadeFlesh II, Andrew A. Dennison, Kevin Lemenager, TheMrOrange614, Artem Kalikin, Scarf_Ace, Keegan Burton and Simonas Grigaliūnas for submitting the idea on our Suggestions Page at WatchMojo.comsuggest

#10: “The Wizard of Oz” (1939)

When Dorothy and her cute pooch land smack dab in the middle of Oz after an amazing tornado ride, she utters the phrase “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” That phrase itself is unremarkable, but the circumstances are outstanding, and it cements the line in our collective memories. It’s so iconic that generations of kids can recite that line without ever having seen the movie as soon as they find themselves away from their comfort zones. And it’s by no means this movie’s only quotable line.

#9: “Napoleon Dynamite” (2004)

Young Mr. Dynamite was enough of a character that his simple life warranted a movie. Which would explain why his asking, “Do the chickens have large talons?” seems like a completely normal question. Maybe it was his unremarkably dull, suburban existence that had him exclaiming “Gosh” as the punctuation to a sentence. At the very least, his seemingly constant annoyance gave us more than enough quotable moments to annoy our friends and family with. “Idiot.”

#8: “The Princess Bride” (1987)

The secondary characters seemed to have all the best lines. While “The Princess Bride” is brimming with memorable quotes, including bad guy Vizzini’s “Inconceivable!” or even Wesley’s “As you wish,” the most memorable ones seem to come from Inigo Montoya. After all, it is his character that gave us the meme-tastic, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means” and “My name is Inigo Montoya! You killed my father! Prepare to die!” Well, you can’t beat that.

#7: “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” (2006)

While there are some scenes in this movie we’d like to forget, there are others that stand out because they grace us with some rather interesting catchphrases. At the height of the film’s popularity, you could hear the words “very nice!” and “high five” echoing from frat houses and freshman locker rooms across America. There’s a delightful vulgarity to the quotable moments in “Borat” that we’re more than willing to embrace.

#6: “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” (1975)

King Arthur and his band of knights are pursuing that elusive prize known as the Holy Grail, and on that quest they manage to spit out some of the most classic phrases in movie history. While we may have heard some of these quotes from quirky older relatives, that doesn’t make them any less hilarious. With lines like “We are the knghts who say ni!” and “Look, that rabbit’s got a vicious streak a mile wide! It’s a killer!” it’s easy to see why they’d catch on. Plus, who doesn’t want an excuse to say, “fart” in a sentence every now and then?

#5: “The Godfather” (1972)

Stuffing your mouth with cotton balls and uttering the phrase “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse” may not land you an Oscar like Brando, but it never hurts to practice. Widely regarded as a cinematic classic, this Oscar-winning ‘70s gangster flick has more quotable moments than we can remember. At least the next time you get a fish delivery in the middle of a meeting, you’ll know “it means Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes.”

#4: “Austin Powers” franchise (1997-2002)

After the original Austin Powers movie came out, the quotes “Yeah baby” and “Do I make you horny?” became the pickup lines from hell. But Mike Myers’ turn as the anachronistic British spy provided audiences with more than a fair share of movie quotables, including “I want my baby back ribs” (Sequel, Spy Who Shagged Me) and “I think you’re shagadelic baby!” Oh, if only we could forget. Now, spouting these quotes is the sure-fire sign of a failed pickup artist. But we’ll allow it this time.

#3: “Forrest Gump” (1994)

Tom Hanks gave an Oscar winning performance as a simple-minded man with an incredibly eventful life. He also gave us several of Mama’s most quotable life lessons to choose from, such as “stupid is as stupid does.” Plus who can forget Jenny encouraging her friend to evade serious injury at the hands of bullies by telling him to “Run Forrest, Run!” Short and sweet, but the power is in the delivery, and we’re still using this one when someone needs to speed it up.

#2: “Star Wars” original trilogy (1977-83)

Fans of the original trilogy can probably recite every line of every scene without missing a beat, but our memories aren’t quite that sharp. Even so, it’s tough to deny that almost every character has some quotable lines, from Princess Leia’s “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope” and Yoda’s “Do or do not. There is no try” to Han Solo’s “I love you. I know” and of course Darth Vader’s often misquoted “No, I am your father.” Even Admiral Akbar gets in on the action with his famous line, “It’s a trap”. Most of all though, the ultimate Jedi greeting is this trilogy’s most enduring phrase “May the force be with you”.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:
- “Office Space” (1999)
- “Casablanca” (1942)
- “Mean Girls” (2004)
- “Airplane!” (1980)
- “Zoolander” (2001)

#1: “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004)

What’s better than being trapped in a glass case of emotion? Being able to recite an “Anchorman” quote on nearly any occasion. Going furniture shopping? Try “I love lamp.” Headed to a fancy restaurant? Hit ‘em with “I’ll take your mother, Dorothy Mantooth, out for a nice seafood dinner and never call her again.” How about “I love scotch. Scotchy scotch scotch” – for when life gets a little too rough. By the hammer of Thor, the possibilities are truly endless, you smelly pirate hookers!

Do you agree with our list? What movie can you not stop quoting? For more entertaining Top 10s published every day, be sure to subscribe to WatchMojo.com.
