Top 10 Most Surprising Movie Couples
#10: Batman & Catwoman
“Batman Returns” (1992)
He's Gotham City's Caped Crusader, and she's a sly latex-clad cat burglar. Batman and Catwoman have had a longstanding, tension-filled relationship that always keeps fans guessing. In 1992's "Batman Returns," their dynamic played out on the big screen and boy, does it sizzle! Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Keaton play Selina Kyle, Bruce Wayne, and their alter egos, whose attraction leads to romance. But what makes their relationship so surprising is their hero versus villain dynamic. Kyle is sometimes a foe and sometimes an ally, which is what makes everything between them so unpredictable and exciting!
#9: Jessica & Roger Rabbit
“Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” (1988)
Jessica and Roger Rabbit might have been drawn together, but they’re definitely a surprising match! First of all, one of them is a human and the other is a walking talking rabbit. Whether or not they’re cartoons, interspecies romances in media are always odd to say the least. Secondly, their personalities are total opposites. Roger is all about being silly and wacky, while Jessica is sultry and kind of serious. However, their affection for each other is evident and although they don’t make a lot of sense on paper, their love is anything but two dimensional.
#8: Edward & Kim
“Edward Scissorhands” (1990)
It took this couple a while to warm up to each other but once they did, it melted all of our hearts! Edward and Kim come from very different worlds and that almost kept them apart. Luckily, they were able to see past their differences and their young romance started to bloom. While it’s unexpected, it does become the beating heart of this Tim Burton classic. Of course, hand holding was off the table for this couple, but they discovered some creative ways to express their affection. Sadly, despite all this growth, they don’t end up together, which to this day, still cuts deep.
#7: Kip & LaFawnduh
“Napoleon Dynamite” (2004)
We aren’t denying that this couple have true feelings for one another, but they are an unexpected pair! “Napoleon Dynamite’s” Kip and LaFawnduh met online, so there was an air of mystery around them from the start. When LaFawnduh finally arrives to meet him in person, it seems like a pretty awkward match, given her snazzy style, and Kip’s … well, lack of style. Of course, she does give him a little makeover. But it doesn’t change his awkward demeanor - something that’s quite evident during their “I Dos”.
#6: Harold & Maude
“Harold and Maude” (1971)
He is fascinated by death, and she is, well...nearing it. After their meet cute at a funeral, Harold and Maude form a bond that soon blooms into something more. Harold isn't even in his 20s, while Maude is almost 80, making their May-December romance one of the ages. But perhaps what makes their relationship so surprising is that it kind of makes sense. She teaches him to embrace life, and he shows her companionship. Sure, it's quirky and eccentric, but perhaps this romance proves that you’re only as young as you feel?
#5: Kylo Ren & Rey
“Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” (2019)
There’s no denying that "Star Wars" Kylo Ren and Rey shared a strong bond thanks to the Force, but that does not mean they make sense romantically. Kylo is a straight-up villain who uses and abuses Rey. To begin, he interrogates her and Forces his way into her mind. He also tries to convert her to the Dark Side - surely the biggest red flag in the universe. No, this is not one of the hot and bothered forbidden romances. It’s a destructive and toxic dynamic of cosmic proportions.
#4: Josh & Susan
“Big” (1988)
This couple would have been totally fine if it wasn’t for the fact that one of them is a twelve year old boy trapped in the body of a grown man! Yes, 1988’s “Big” is considered a comedy classic but has problematic written all over it. It’s all fun until the boy in question, Josh, meets an adult Susan and they begin a romance. It’s pure cringe watching their attraction and relationship develop knowing that he’s a literal child! Thankfully, in the end, they go their separate ways, but this movie romance leaves us pretty unsettled.
#3: Bender & Claire
“The Breakfast Club” (1985)
“The Breakfast Club” is the quintessential 80s teen flick. It’s got it all: laughs, drama and romance! And while we love seeing young love blossom, Claire Standish and John Bender’s coupling leaves us flabbergasted. Not only does Bender mock and bully Claire, he also sexually assaults her, making it a big shock that only a short time later, they’re linked up. Knowing all of this makes it impossible to root for their opposites-attract romance. Here’s hoping they broke up as quickly as they got together!
#2: Theodore & Samantha
“Her” (2013)
This is a romance unlike any other. In Spike Jonze’s 2013 sci-fi romance, “Her”, he pairs his protagonist, Theodore, with an AI assistant named Samantha. She only communicates with her voice, but soon, Theodore finds himself falling love with her. Set in the future, their relationship takes many emotional turns, and leads to a truly gutting conclusion. However, what might be most surprising about this unconventional pair is how they tug at your heartstrings!

#1: Elisa & Amphibian Man
“The Shape of Water” (2017)
Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” is about two lost souls who finally find love. Yes, this story has been told time and time again, but the twist here is that one of them is a mute custodian named Elisa, and the other is a humanoid amphibian! It’s a truly surprising coupling due to the obvious fact that they’re different species. Over the course of the film, they dance, fantasize and even…uh consummate their relationship, and it becomes clear that the odd pair are soulmates. Sure, the whole situation is a little fishy, so to speak, but we still stan it!
