#10: “Troy” (2004)

Top 10 Times Troy Bolton Was the WORST

Starting the list off with a powerful entry that’s loosely based off of Homer’s poem “The Iliad,” this epic war film depicts a large part of the decade long Trojan War. “Troy” is filled to the brim with gruesome battles, so it’s not surprising that the movie’s death count is 572 people killed on screen. With Brad Pitt offering a god-like performance as Achilles, and Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom also providing some extra star power and swordplay, this mythical tale sees a death count of epic proportions.

#9: “Kingdom of Heaven” (2005)

It’s time to jump from the time of Troy to the Crusades. A fictionalized version of French blacksmith Balian of Ibelin’s life, the historical drama covers the battles between the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the invading sultan Saladin. “Kingdom of Heaven” boasts a morbidly impressive number of onscreen deaths, with 610 soldiers dying as a result of religious warfare. Knowing that Ridley Scott is heading the production, it just seems like a given that there will be characters who lose lives.

#8: “Titanic” (1997)

Top 10 Titanic Stars: Where Are They Now?

Despite how beautiful it looks, we wouldn’t like to ride on this film’s titular passenger liner. Coming from the brilliant mind of director James Cameron, “Titanic” follows the tragic love story of Jack and Rose while they’re on the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic. For this list’s sake, we don’t care so much about their tale at this time; what we care about is the fact that the Titanic is struck by an iceberg, which causes the ship to sink. Among the chaos in the film’s over three hour run time, 307 passengers lose their lives, though over 1,500 passengers and crew members perished in the real life tragedy.

#7: “Saving Private Ryan” (1998)

Ready for the most intense opening in cinema history? In the widely acclaimed World War II epic, audiences follow Tom Hanks as he leads a brave squad to save Private Ryan, the last of four servicemen brothers. The film doesn’t mess around, as proven by the death count that reaches over 100 in the first half hour alone! Through “Saving Private Ryan”’s extreme use of realism, director Steven Spielberg showed the staggering results of war with about 255 on screen deaths.

#6: “The Last Samurai” (2003)

Top 10 Samurai Movies

You can find our next entry on the other side of the rising sun. This Academy Award-nominated epic war flick places Tom Cruise in the main role as an American army officer who has multiple encounters with samurai during the westernization of Japan in the late 19th century. The film is inspired by the real life Satsuma Rebellion in 1877. While the real-life rebellion, led by samurai Saigo Takamori, had a death toll in the thousands, the film toned things down a notch by portraying 558 deaths. Never cross blades with a samurai!

#5: “300” (2007)

Top 10 Movies That Experienced Massive Backlash

This fantasy war film shows just how much damage an unmatched army can do. In Zack Snyder’s adaptation of the Frank Miller and Lyn Varley comic series – which, in turn, takes cues from the real-life Battle of Thermopylae – viewers watch as a small group of 300 Spartans takes on the massivePersian army that’s 1000 times their size. Is there blood? No doubt. Are there shiny abs? Obviously. From the wall of Persian spies to the slow motion Spartan offensive, plenty of soldiers are slain in the movie’s bloody battles. With a total death count of 600, “300” makes sure you’ll never doubt the power of a Spartan. This. Is. SPARTA!

#4: “Independence Day” (1996)

Top 10 Independence Day Resurgence Facts

When aliens attack Earth, what does America need? Nukes, of course! Following Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum as they try to figure out a way to repel the invasion, as well as Bill Pullman as one of the best big screen U.S. presidents, this sci-fi disaster flick has got it all. And you just know that anytime there is an alien invasion, cities will be annihilated, landmarks will explode and bodies will stack upon bodies. While there isn’t an official on screen count for deaths, judging by the scenes from this Roland Emmerich-directed blockbuster, we can guess it was definitely monumental.

#3: “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003)

Top 10 Biggest Differences Between The Lord Of The Rings Movies And Books

Our heroes have traveled far from the Shire and left a bloodstained path along the way. The third and final entry of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings”’s trilogy concludes Frodo’s epic journey to Mount Doom. With many major battles such the one at Minas Tirith, which has soldiers dying left and right, this is the bloodiest entry of the series. Though “The Two Towers” almost made this spot with its 468 kills, “The Return of the King” racked up 836 deaths on a PG-13 rating! Because one does not simply walk into Mordor…

#2: “2012” (2009)

Sometimes end of the world theories can actually have some merit. There has been no other film that caused a planet to collapse so beautifully in front of our eyes than Roland Emmerich’s version of the 2012 phenomenon, as linked to Mayan culture. With John Cusack as a survivor of the mega-disaster, viewers watch as he tries to keep his family alive while plenty of others die all around them. Meanwhile, the actual on-screen death count in the sci-fi adventure is impossible to even attempt to count, but feel free to give it a try.

Before we unveil our number one pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
- “Rambo” (2008)
- “Man of Steel” (2013)
- “Deep Impact” (1998)
- “Windtalkers” (2002)
- “Hard Boiled” (1992)

#1: “World War Z” (2013)

Top 10 Post-Apocalyptic Movies To See Before The World Ends

We had to have a zombie entry on here somewhere. Adapted from Max Brooks’ novel of the same name, this action horror flick depicts Brad Pitt as an ex-United Nations employee who tries to suppress a zombie apocalypse. In this world, the undead are around every corner, so you gotta do what you can to stay alive. Just doing a brief count of the zombie/human kills throughout the film, “World War Z”’s death rate can easily pass any other entry on our list. Because what does a zombie film need more of? Zombies, obviously!
