#10: “Tropic Thunder” (2008)
If there’s a movie out there that competes with “Deadpool” in terms of hilarious and gratuitous violence, it’s “Tropic Thunder.” This Ben Stiller directed film follows a group of actors stranded in a dangerous and drug cartel filled jungle. They think they are a part of some hardcore guerilla filmmaking experiment but, unbeknownst to them, they are actually in serious danger - and when the all-too real bloodshed begins, the camera doesn’t turn away. Featuring a killer cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black, this comedy shares a similar sense of humor to that of our favorite Merc with a Mouth.
#9: “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” (2010)
If you like that slow-motion opening action sequence in “Deadpool,” you’ll love this movie. Adapted from Bryan Lee O’Malley’s series of graphic novels of the same name, “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” oozes with a unique visual style that, true to its source material, takes its cues from manga and video games. The story is about Scott Pilgrim, who must defeat all the evil exes of his love interest, Ramona Flowers. The premise is a pretty ridiculous one, but it lends itself to some extraordinary fight scenes and incredibly original special effects. Comic book fans are sure to appreciate this visual feast for the eyes.
#8: “Last Action Hero” (1993)
In terms of pure ‘90s camp and silliness, few films can hold a candle to John McTiernan’s “Last Action Hero.” If you’re not familiar with this director’s name, you’ll surely recognize his body of work, which include such all-time classics as “Predator,” “Die Hard,” and “The Hunt for Red October.” In other words... he’s one of the greatest action directors ever. This film is about a young movie fan who is magically transported into a film alongside his favorite action hero, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Just like “Deadpool”, this movie is full of clever genre-references that diehard action film connoisseurs will surely appreciate.
#7: “Zombieland” (2009)
Like all great movies, “Zombieland” and “Deadpool” are essentially love stories. “Deadpool” is about Wade’s undying love for his beautiful prostitute-turned-girlfriend Vanessa. “Zombieland” is about Tallahassee’s love for Twinkies. Okay, that might not be the central plot, but what we’re trying to get across is… both films have heart. Furthermore, they both succeed in mixing R-rated comedy with action and violence. A wicked sense of humor is something they also share in common. So much so, that if you enjoyed one of the two, we’re willing to bet you’ll appreciate the other.
#6: “John Wick” (2014)
Like “Deadpool,” this is a movie about revenge. While Wade Wilson is on a quest to kill the man behind the horrible genetic experiments that were performed on him, John Wick is on a mission to avenge the death of his puppy. Can you believe which one of these is the comedy? Both movies are dripping with visual style and are packed to the hilt with great action scenes. Consider yourself warned though, John Wick doesn’t deliver many laughs. Fun fact: “Deadpool 2” is actually being directed by David Leitch, the uncredited co-director of “John Wick.” He has a few pretty good credits to his name, so the Merc’s sequel should be in good hands.
#5: “Hot Fuzz” (2007)
Edgar Wright, the director of this film is something of a cult icon in the movie world. He is responsible for several R-rated action comedies including this one and “Shaun of the Dead.” Suffice it to say that his style would be popular with anyone who enjoyed “Deadpool.” This movie’s plot is about a London cop who is transferred to a small town with a dark secret. Sounds standard enough, but rest assured, there is nothing ordinary or predictable about this wildly inventive film. As for gore? Don’t you worry... it’s got a scene that’s sure to make you squirm.
#4: “Super” (2010)
Red costume? Check. Superheroes? Check. R-rated? Check. “Super” is about a down on his luck fry cook who decides to take things into his own hands after his wife dumps him for a club owner/drug dealer. At first, he tries reporting her as being kidnapped, but then resolves to becoming a real-life superhero. Can’t be that hard, right? The only problem is that hitting people with a wrench is classified as assault and vigilantism doesn’t go over well with real police. Written and directed by James Gunn before he took on “Guardians of the Galaxy”, it’s a super dark take on the superhero genre.
#3: “Shoot ‘Em Up” (2007)
This one is a wild ride. A lone man sits at a bus stop eating a carrot. A strange pregnant woman is chased down by a thug. It’s a simple setup, but one that quickly becomes one of the most over-the-top R-rated action movies ever made. Clive Owen stars as the enigmatic Mr. Smith, who delivers the woman’s baby and is then forced to protect it from gun-wielding thugs for the rest of the movie. The action sequences, which are actually said to be inspired by Bugs Bunny cartoons, would fit right into a Deadpool flick. All that to say… it’s a must watch for fans of the Merc.
#2: “Kingsman: The Secret Service” (2014)
This inspired action-comedy is based on the comic book by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar. Millar is one of the biggest names in comics. The story follows Harry Hart who returns to help the son of his dead partner who has fallen on hard times. He tells the kid the truth about his father and recruits him into the secretive Kingsman service. What follows is an action movie which, like “Deadpool,” does a great job of not taking itself too seriously. It’s full of humor and great fight scenes. Be sure to check it out if you haven’t already.

Another movie based on a Mark Millar comic – with John Romtia, Jr., this one follows Dave Lizewski, an average teenage boy who decides to become a superhero. Things go about as well as you’d expect, with Dave getting pummeled regularly - until he meets former cop Big Daddy. His 11-year-old daughter, Hit-Girl, is a hilariously violent, well-trained, and ruthless vigilante herself. This movie has all the action, comedy, and swearing you’d want from an R-rated superhero flick, but it is also grounded in reality, where every punch hurts and wounds don’t heal so quickly. For fans of Deadpool in need of entertainment between now and the Merc’s next big screen outing - this is a perfect choice.
