#5: “The Descent” (2005)

Horror movies are a dime a dozen, but the ones that really deliver? Those are a rarity, especially when you take old classics out of the picture. Written and directed by Neil Marshall, “The Descent” is a claustrophobic horror film starring an all-female cast, about a group of women who not only get trapped in an unknown cave system while spelunking, but also encounter terrifying subterranean creatures. It’s a thrilling and deeply engaging film, which, unlike so many of its horror movie peers, also delivers on the human level thanks to a strong script and solid performances by its lead actors. Sadly, it’s officially gone as of September 1st, taking its sequel with it.
#5: “American Vandal” - Season 2 (2017-)

Did you miss the first season of this hilarious Netflix Original Series? Pause this video, go binge watch it all and we’ll continue when you’re caught up! Playing on the popularity of true crime documentary series like “Making A Murderer”, “American Vandal” was a scripted, carefully planned true crime mockumentary about a student who gets expelled after being accused of spray painting 27 penises on faculty cars. After this gut-busting but also thoughtfully crafted first season, amateur documentary sleuths Peter Maldonado and Sam Ecklund return to bring their now well-documented talents to St. Bernardine Catholic School, where a mysterious criminal known only as the Turd Burglar has been terrorizing the students by making them crap their pants.
#4: “The Imitation Game” (2014)
Leaving: September 28th, 2018
Benedict Cumberbatch can do no wrong. (Zoolander 2) Okay… well, nobody’s perfect, but regardless, there’s no denying that this English actor is a master of his craft who has brought numerous characters to life on the big and small screen to wonderful effect. In 2014, he starred in this historical drama recounting the true story of Alan Turing, a man who was instrumental in helping the allies to win the second World War by building one of the first computers, which he used to crack the codes of the Nazi Enigma Machine. Cumberbatch delivers as stunning performance as the brilliant but complicated Turing, while the film as a whole highlights an oft-overlooked front of WWII.
#4: “Sierra Burgess Is a Loser” (2018)
Coming: September 7th, 2018
You demanded justice for Barb, and though it took some time, Netflix has delivered. Or at least… they’re making up for the character’s mistreatment in Stranger Things by giving the actress behind Barb, Shannon Purser, her very own film, which debuts on the streaming service September 7th, 2018. A loose, modern retelling of the 1897 play by Edmond Rostand, Cyrano de Bergerac, “Sierra Burgess Is a Loser” looks like a classic high school tale of unrequited love, social hierarchies and self-discovery. Purser brings more than enough talent to make this a must-watch, but the addition of Noah Centineo from the Netflix original film, “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before”, certainly doesn’t hurt.
#3: “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” (2008)
Leaving: September 1st, 2018
Losing someone or something precious is never easy, and much like Jason Segel’s Peter Bretter struggles to come to grips with the fact that his girlfriend has left him, we’re having trouble accepting that this funny and heart-warming rom-com will no longer be waiting for us on Netflix everyday when we get home. As of September 1st, 2018, you’ll have to go elsewhere to rewatch the shenanigans of Russell Brand’s ridiculous rockstar Aldous Snow, or bask in the glory of seeing Jason Segel and Mila Kunis’ characters fall in love. But hey, we’ve memorized “A Taste for Love”, so at least we’ll always have a little part of the film to take with us.
#3: “BoJack Horseman” - Season 5 (2014-)
Coming: September 14th, 2018
Will Arnett’s live-action Netflix series, “Flaked”, might have flopped, but he’s more than made up for it with his voice role as the titular anthropomorphic horse in this runaway success of an animated series. Season 1 took some time to find its footing, but “BoJack Horseman” has slowly but surely established itself as one of the most inspired and insightful animated series of its generation, tackling tough questions while also delivering the laughs. Season 4 ended on a decidedly more hopeful note than one has come to expect from this dramedy, and we can’t wait to see where season 5 takes Bojack and friends.
#2: “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012)
Leaving: September 16th, 2018
Curse you Wes Anderson! You roll in here with your super polished aesthetic and overly formal characters and yet somehow manage to make us fall in love time and time again! With this 2012 film, “Moonrise Kingdom”, the auteur filmmaker took us to New England for a nostalgic childhood adventure alongside orphaned wilderness scout Sam Shakusky and his penpal / romantic interest Suzy Bishop, who run away together. It’s touching, whimsical film the likes of which only Anderson can make, and it’s got serious replay value. Unfortunately, you’ve only got until September 16th to do that on Netflix.
#2: “Black Panther” (2018)
Coming: September 4th, 2018
The king has arrived. The superhero Black Panther had long been overlooked and underappreciated by the general public, much to the chagrin of his comic book devotees who fully understood just how incredible the character was. Thankfully, in 2018, T’Challa finally got his own solo film, and even with the hype following his debut in “Captain America: Civil War”, he proceeded to defy all expectations, blowing everyone away at the box office while simultaneously impressing critics. However many times you saw it in theaters, it’s safe to assume that you’re going to be re-watching “Black Panther” when it lands on Netflix September 4th.

Sadly, as one of Marvel’s best films comes in, we must simultaneously bid adieu to arguably DC’s best film adaptation, Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed “The Dark Knight”. After redeeming the character on the big screen with “Batman Begins”, a film that finally washed the taste of Joel Schumacher’s movies out of our mouths, Nolan proceeded to take the Caped Crusader to unprecedented heights with this unforgettable, carefully crafted film. Having it on Netflix has been a real blessing, but unfortunately all good things must come to an end, and so it’s with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to both “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight”.

You’ve got to hand it to Netflix, they just keep upping their game in terms of original content. In addition to their already impressive variety of original series and ever-growing library of original films, they’re now bringing us this miniseries which looks to be HBO quality with talent to match. Starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, “Maniac” tells the story of two strangers who connect while signing up for a bizarre experimental pharmaceutical trial that promises to fix ALL of their problems. Directed Cary Fukunaga, who directed the first season of True Detective, “Maniac” looks like one of the most compelling series of 2018, period.
